Cline Leads; Moneymaker in Third at HPO Grantville

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Jeremy Cline
Jeremy Cline

Day 1 of the Hollywood Poker Open Grantville Regional Main Event attracted 92 entries, but after 14 levels of play, jut 18 players managed to survived to bag up at the night's end. Leading the way into Day 2 is Jeremy Cline, who finished Day 1 with 274,000. Meanwhile, Michael Nolan finished a tad behind with 260,500, while Tour ambassador and 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Chris Moneymaker sits in third place with 199,000. Moneymaker's seeking his second HPO win after taking down the St. Louis event last season for just over $36,000. He also has one other final table, a third-place finish at Tunica last year.

Others making it through included Kent Bitzer (148,000), Alex Queen (132,000), Ken Moore (121,000), Ethan Dolan (100,500), and Tim "T-Mac" McCarthy (68,500). Blinds will be 1,500/3,000/500 when play resumes on Sunday.

Moneymaker dragged a huge pot during Level 14 (1,200/2,400/400), the final one of the night. He had been battling with rival Kevin Truong all night, with the two exchanging three-bet pots as each player sought to establish a position as table captain.

It was Moneymaker who ultimately came out ahead in the battle, with the final blow being struck when Truong raised to 6,200 in middle position and Moneymaker three-bet to 13,500. Truong came along and called bets of 15,000 on the flop and 25,000 on the turn as the board rolled out {7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{3-Spades}. He checked a final time on the end, and Moneymaker shoved for 32,400.

"Don't tell me you have eights, man." Truong said.

Moneymaker had only {j-}{j-}, but it was good after Truong check-called. Truong busted shortly after, completing a fall from the chip lead.

Other players busting on Day 1 included Kane Kalas, "Pai Gow" Tom Daubert, Mark Rebuck, Jerry Snook, and Marc Fluss.

The tournament attracted a field of 92 players, a clear step up for the tour after last year's 37-player field, which was won by Bradley Yazici. Numbers are up across the board for the HPO in Season 3, making it clear the new $1,115 price point is a hit with the players. The remaining 18 players will return Sunday at noon to play for a first-place prize of $29,342.

Moneymaker Doubles Through Truong

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Chris Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker

Kevin Truong raised to 6,200 in middle position, and Chris Moneymaker made it 13,500 to go in the cutoff. The rivals went to the flop after Truong called, and it came {7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{10-Hearts}. Truong check-called 15,000. The {9-Clubs} turn made it a four-straight on the board, and Truong checked. Moneymaker bet 25,000, and Truong thought for a bit and silently dropped in a call. On the {3-Spades} river, Moneymaker pushed all in for what ended up being 32,400 after Truong checked.

"Don't tell me you have eights, man," Truong said with a sigh. "I could see you having pocket eights..."

He stood up and crossed his arms, thinking for a couple of minutes before announcing a call.

"I just got jacks," Moneymaker said. "I think they're good, though."

They were, as Truong held {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}.

Truong Takes Next Round

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Kevin Truong
Kevin Truong

Kevin Truong and Chris Moneymaker are at war, playing big pots against each other seemingly every other hand. In the most recent battle, Truong raised to 3,800 on the button and called a three-bet to 10,600 from the former Main Event champ. Both checked the {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{j-Hearts}, and Truong called 10,100 on the {5-Clubs} turn. Moneymaker fired 15,000 on the {9-Diamonds} river, and Truong thought awhile and flicked in a call.

"You have an ace, you're good," Moneymaker said.

Truong showed {a-Spades}{k-Spades}, and Moneymaker flashed what looked like {k-}{q-} before mucking.

Kalas Busted

Level 9 : 400/800, 75 ante
Kane Kalas
Kane Kalas

According to Alex Queen, Kane Kalas lost a chunk of his stack with {a-}{9-} suited against a player holding queens and then shipped in his remaining 15,000 or so with {a-}{q-}, failing to improve against an opponent with {j-}{j-}.

Rogers, Hawkins Bust

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Jason Rogers
Jason Rogers

A player in early position bet 2,500 on a {q-Hearts}{5-Spades}{k-Clubs} flop and got calls from Dennis Adams in the cutoff and big blind Jason Rogers. Action checked to Adams on the {3-Hearts} turn, and he bet about 3,500. Rogers jammed for approximately 9,300 more, folding out the flop bettor. Adams leaned back and looked pained but ultimately called.

Adams: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Rogers: {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Rogers had turned a flush draw but was still outkicked. The {3-Spades} didn't do it for him, and he headed for the exit.

At another table, Paul Myndrov eliminated Tiwaun Hawkins.

Three-Outer, Then One-Outer

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
HPO Grantville

A player on the button opened for a raise then called off his whole stack of about 7,500 when Dario Milas shoved from the big blind.

Milas: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Button: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}

The flop came {10-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{8-Spades}, and a murmur went through the table after the three-outer. Milas wasn't dead yet though, and after a {9-Hearts} turn he managed to find the {k-Diamonds} river to get the unlikely knockout.

"Check-Call Capital of the World"

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
HPO Grantville

A player at Table 12 is letting his table know the lay of the land.

"Welcome to Hollywood!" he said. "It's the check-call capital of the world. They might just change the name to Check-Call Casino."

Thomas Eliminates One

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Jason Thomas
Jason Thomas

Two players each put in about 1,500 preflop, and Jason Thomas checked from the hijack to an opponent in the cutoff. Thomas called a bet of 1,000 on a {j-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{8-Spades} flop, and he check-called 1,950 more on the {7-Diamonds} turn. When the {k-Diamonds} hit, he took some time before sliding in 8,000, enough to put his opponent all in. The player shrugged and called it off for about 6,000, and Thomas turned over {q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a runner flush.

The field has already grown to 63 players here in the early goings at Hollywood Poker Open Grantville, and one face certainly sticks out in the crowd: 2003 Main Event champ Chris Moneymaker. Moneymaker serves as the tour ambassador for the HPO. He's parlayed that role into a few deep runs on the tour already, including a third-place finish at HPO Tunica last year for $6,016 and a win at HPO St. Louis for $36,259. We'll keep a close eye on the Moneymaker today.

Welcome to Day 1 of Hollywood Poker Open Grantville Regional Main Event

Hollywood Poker Open
Hollywood Poker Open

After about a month off, the Hollywood Poker Open is firing up another Regional Main Event, this one in the Northeast. Grantville, Pa. is the site of the latest event, and after a series of more than 20 preliminary events, it's time for the big showcase, the $1,115 regional championship.

Last year, this event attracted 37 players, and Bradley Yazici emerged victorious to claim $22,752. This year, the tour has made a strategic switch to a more affordable price point (last year's was $1,800), and a bigger field is expected.

One of the slower structures around will be in use for the tournament, which should encourage plenty of play, especially throughout the early levels. The tournament is scheduled for 14 50-minute levels on today's Day 1, with 15-minute breaks given every two levels. Any player eliminated in the first six levels will be allowed to reenter if he or she should choose to do so. There will be a 60-minute dinner break after Level 6.

Cards will fly at 12:15 local time, so be ready when the action starts.
