Simon Deadman Leads final 23 into Day 3 of the HPO Championship 2014

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Simon Deadman
Simon Deadman

The action started fast and furious on the second day of the $2,500 Hollywood Poker Open Championship Main Event at the M Resort Spa Casino. When it began, Tommie Janssen was leading the field, and within the first two levels of play, more than one fourth of the pack would not be seated anymore.

After 11 one-hour levels, Simon Deadman bagged up the most chips out of 24 players remaining and the Brit is one of seven players with a seven-digit stack. Deadman eliminated Ron Carrocio and David Eldridge in one of the last hands of the day to boost his stack to 1,768,000 in chips, profiting from picking up pocket aces at least four times throughout the day.

At the second break, a bikini contest provided a temporary excitement away from the table and the action continued at a very fast pace. Those that fell before the money included Calvin Anderson, Ami Barer, Will Givens, Liv Boeree, Darya Hulyk, Toby Lewis, Ravi Raghavan, Niall Farrell, and Sam Stein.

Stein fell just before the money and hand-for-hand play wasn't even initiated yet when a short stack hit the rail after being unable to hold up with {A-}{8-} versus {Q-}{J-}. Then, it didn't take long for quite a few players to bust once the money was reached.

Bruno Lopes (51st - $6,086), Greg Ostrander (50th - $6,086), radio host Dan Harkenrider (44th - $7,178), Chris Hunichen (41st - $7,178), Jens Kerper (33rd - $8,583) and Andrew Lichtenberger were some of the notables that cashed but didn't bag up chips. Lichtenberger ran pocket tens into the pocket Jacks of Kitty Kuo and finished in 32nd place.

Christopher DeMaci (1,344,000), Elliott Zaydman (1,065,000), Kitty Kuo (1,000,000), and Mike Sowers (1,000,000) are among the chip millionaires. Lurking behind them are the talented Brian Hastings (692,000), Andy Spears (629,000), Jack Schanbacher (585,000), and HPO Regional champion Bradley Yazici (555,000).

Within the last half an hour of play, the field was reduced from 27 to 23 and they will all be returning to the tables when the action resumes on Sunday at noon Las Vegas time. PokerNews will be there to provide all the keys hands when the winner and new owner of $351,097 will be crowned, so be sure to stay tuned for the action.

Thomas Lutz was down to 138,000 in chips and moved all in under the gun. Alex Goulder moved all in as well and everyone folded. Lutz held {Q-}{9-} and was racing against the {7-}{7-} of Goulder.

The pocket pair would hold up for Goulder and Lutz was eliminated in 24th place for $10,299.

Adam Bitker Eliminated in 25th Place ($10,299)

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Adam Bitker
Adam Bitker

Adam Bitker bet 40,000 on the {9-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{4-Spades} flop and 102,000 on the {9-Spades} turn before checking the {J-Hearts} river to Mike Sowers. The latter took some time before announcing all in for 340,000 and he had his opponent covered by about 280,000 chips.

Bitker eventually made the call and Sowers turned over {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} for a full house, which led Bitker to release his cards into the muck and declare defeat. He indeed couldn't reveal a better hand and joined the rail just before the end of the day.

Easy Game, Simon Deadman Eliminates Two in One Blow

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
David Eldridge
David Eldridge

Simon Deadman raised the minimum and Ron Carrocio moved all in for approximately 300,000 in chips. David Eldridge moved all in as well and it was folded back to Deadman who wasted no time in making the call as he had {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}. Carrocio had {A-Hearts}{8-Spades} and Eldridge {A-Spades}{Q-Spades} and both players were in trouble and at risk of elimination.

The board would run out {8-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} and Deadman's aces held up. Carrocio finished in 27th place having less chips than Eldridge who was eliminated in 26th place.

Lichtenberger Gets Coolered and Crippled

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Bradley Yazici
Bradley Yazici

The action started with Bradley Yazici opening to 21,000. A couple spots to his left, Andrew Lichtenberger, raised it to 51,000. It was folded back to Yazici who four-bet it to 125,000. Lichtenberger, who had maneuvered his stack up over the half-million chip mark, thought for a few moments and announced he was all in. Yazici beat him into the pot and with good reason as he had {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}. Lichtenberger was the victim of an unfortunate cooler with his {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}.

The board would run out {7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} and Yazici, who won the HPO Regional Championship tournament in Grantville, PA, doubled up to 850,000 in chips while Lichtenberger dropped all the way down to 100,000.

Smith Flips, Lopes Dips

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 500 ante
Bruno Lopes
Bruno Lopes

Jason Smith won a massive flip with {A-}{K-} against the {9-}{9-} of Bruno "Kool Shen" Lopes to bump his stack up to 680,000. The Frenchman got reseated to a new table and was all in for 32,000 with {Q-Clubs}{J-Spades}.

Kent Snyder looked him up with {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts} and had to sweat the {8-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{4-Clubs} board, that ultimately saw the better hand preflop hold up.

Ruben Visser Eliminated and Loses Sidebet

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Ruben Visser
Ruben Visser

Just one hand before his elimination, Mike Sowers gave Ruben Visser 3:1 odds of cashing in the tournament and they agreed to wager $100. The next hand, Visser was in the big blind and three-bet shoved for what looked like 40,000 chips. Sowers was the initial raiser and looked him up.

Visser: {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Sowers: {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}

After the {5-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{3-Clubs} flop and the {7-Spades} turn, only the two over cards were left to save the Dutchman. The {Q-Clubs} river wasn't one of them though and he handed over the $100 bill and left the seat. Even worse, shortly after the table was broken as well as we are down to 71 players.

Hastings Scores Massive Double Up Through Carrocio

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Brian Hastings after doubling up
Brian Hastings after doubling up

Brian Hastings started it off with a raise to 6,500 and the chip leader in the tournament, Ron Carrocio, made it 17,000 to go. It was folded back to Hastings who put in a four bet to 46,500. Carrocio was having none of it and five-bet to 92,000. Hastings also wasn't going anywhere and moved all in.

"I have to," said Carrocio, adding "I call."

Hastings had picked up aces at the perfect time - when the big stack had a hand - as Carrocio had queens.

The flop was a safe one for Hastings, {K-Hearts}{10-Spades}{2-Hearts} but there's always a sweat and such was the case when the dealer put out the {J-Hearts} on the turn to give Carrocio an open-ended straight draw. The river was a beautiful and safe card for Hastings... the {J-Spades}... and Carrocio could only mutter "nice hand" to Hastings. That pot catapulted Hastings past Carrocio in the chip counts as he moved to 440,000 in chips. Carrocio is still sitting with a very healthy stack of 425,000.

Us Old Guys Can Play Too

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Ronald Carroccio
Ronald Carroccio

Ron Carrocio is proving he's no push over at the tables. He came into play today with over 250,000 in chips and is seated directly to the left of Jack Salter who had this to say on Twitter about Mr. Carrocio:

Jack SalterI made friends with old guy on my left. He 3bet me 4 times in first 35mins and I folded every time #tasteofmyownmedicine #HPO

Salter was even more impressed after Carrocio picked up a good sized chunk of chips from another big stack on a {8-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{3-Clubs} flop and showed the bluff with {A-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}.

"Us old guys can play too," said Carrocio after Salter slapped him on the back.

Jack SalterOld guy on my left is a beast. He defend sb and c/r huge 863ccc then 4 bet flop to 100k and shows A5dd. #bosssssssssssssssssssssss

Carroccio impressed Brian Hastings as well:

Brian HastingsOld guy at my table just 4bet flop over 100bb deep on T74ccc and showed A5dd after getting a fold. So sick! #HPO2014
