Day 1a of the HPT Ameristar East Chicago $1,650 Main Event saw 103 entrants hit the felt in search of a Day 2 bag, and when the dust settled, just 20 made it through, with Dan Sepiol and his 367,000 stack leading the way edging Ruslan Saldkov's stack of 291,000 at the end of the night.

Next in line is Edward Sebesta as he finished with 252,000 with finding bags included Brendan Shillerl (216,000) and Brian Gabriel (213,000) rounding out the top five stacks.

A total of 103 entries turned up for the first of three starting flights in the unlimited reentry tournament, so the prize pool is off to a strong start.

Some of the players who contributed to that number but failed to make it through included Mike Shin, Brett Apter, Aaron Massey, Ralph Massey, Craig Casino, Artem Zverkhovskyy and Chris Moon.

Those players, along with any newcomers, will have two more flights in which they can attempt to advance to Day 2, during tomorrow’s Day 1b flight at 2 pm. All players that manage to make their way to Day 2 will return on Sunday, September 1st at 11 am to play down to the televised Final Table of nine Monday, September 2nd at Noon that will play down to a winner.

Get to Know Reigning HPT Player of the Year Aaron Johnson

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Aaron Johnson with Jeremy Smith

One of the best stories of 2018 was the incredible year of Minnesota’s Aaron Johnson. Back in May, PokerNews spoke with Johnson about leading the Player of the Year races on both Season 9 of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) and Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Season XIV.

Over the next seven months, Johnson maintained his lead on the MSPT, and while he lost the HPT lead for a bit, he ultimately ended with it thanks to a deep run in the season finale. That allowed Johnson to become the first player to ever win POY titles on two different tours in the same year.

For doing so, Johnson won a $10,000 prize package for each tour.

“It feels amazing,” Johnson told PokerNews. “Coming into the year I certainly wanted to make a run at MSPT POY (which has always been a goal of mine), but I never imagined that I’d be in contention for multiple POY titles. To actually achieve it is unreal.”

Johnson, who was out at the 2019 WSOP, is in action at the HPT Golden Gates.

Our updates may be focused on the keystone $1,650 Main Event, but this is not the only tournament that’s played out during the latest Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Ameristar East Chicago stop.

There has been a slew of side events all week long including Event #5: $300 No-Limit Hold’em Deepstack Bounty ($100 bounties), a tournament that drew 140 runners and created a $21,700 prize pool.

The top 18 got paid including Jay Crain (10th - $521), Sandra Morse (11th - $521), Brad Sailor (16th - $347), Homi Syodia (17th - $347), and Randel Vanderhyden (18th - $347).

The tournament came to an end when the final two players – Yuryi Moskovoy and Tomas Stundzia – worked a deal that saw the former claim the title and a smooth $5,000 in prize money. The latter secured $4,506 for finishing in second place.

Chris Moon HPT East Chicago

One of the Heartland Poker Tour flagship events is set to kick off as it is time once again for HPT Ameristar East Chicago $1,650 Main Event after a solid week of preliminary action here just outside of the Windy City.

The Main Event gets rolling with Day 1a, the first of three starting flights. Cards and chips are scheduled to start flying at 2 p.m. local time.

While the tournament doesn't carry a guarantee, it has typically gone well north of a $500,000 guarantee in the past, with the prize pool often reaching around $1 million.

This past May, HPT Ameristar Casino crowned a new Main Event Champion as Chris Moon topped a field of 570 to take down a career-best $183,899 and a $3,500 HPT Championship package to join the likes of Nick Davidson, Josh Reichard, Aaron Massey, and Nick Pupillo as HPT titleholders at the Ameristar Casino in East Chicago.

Starting Flight

The plan for Day 1a is to play 15 levels, lasting 40 minutes apiece, with breaks after every three levels including a 60-minute dinner break after Level 9. Alternately, play may end if 13 percent of the field — rounded down — is left at some point.

Everyone will receive 30,000 chips to start with blinds beginning at 100/100 and progressing to 2,000/4,000/4,000 with the big blind ante coming into play at the start of level four. Players can reenter as many times as they wish, should they go bust.

The surviving players from all starting flights will return for Day 2 action at 11 am on Sunday and will play down to a final table which will be live-streamed with a 10-minute delay Monday, September 2nd.

“HPT is excited to have PokerNews providing additional event coverage in 2019,” said Korey Stewart, HPT Marketing Manager. “Season XV is shaping up to be another record-breaking year for the tour. We’ve already added several new venues to the schedule and we’re hoping to announce a few more new additions soon. There will be plenty of opportunities for poker enthusiasts across the country to take a shot at winning life-changing money at nationally televised final tables. We’re looking forward to having an industry leader like PokerNews there to report on it every step of the way.”
