Yousef Saleh Goes Wire-To-Wire To Take Down HPT Ameristar Vicksburg and $36,895!

Level 26 : 20,000/50,000, 20,000 ante
HPT Ameristar Vicksburg champ Yousef Saleh
HPT Ameristar Vicksburg champ Yousef Saleh

Yousef Saleh outlasted a field of 146 runners to become the champion of Heartland Poker Tour Ameristar Vicksburg $1,100 Main Event, good for $36,895 and a $3,500 HPT Season XV Championship package. The vast majority of Saleh's $89,576 in Hendon Mob reported tournament earnings have been accrued all in 2019, and this latest bounty pushes him above the six-figure mark in lifetime earnings.

Saleh, who already picked up a mid-major title earlier in the year when he took down the RunGood Poker Series Tunica Main Event in March, kept his aggressive style of play on full display for the duration of the final table, constantly putting maximum pressure on his foes with his huge chip stack. It seemed like the few times that anyone would play back at Saleh, he would wake up with a monster, a plan that Saleh said he had in motion before the day even began.

"That was my plan; if you stay on top, you stay on top the whole way," Saleh told HPT's Tournament Director Jeremy Smith after his victory. "Everybody thinks I'm lucky; you need luck, I know that. I folded a lot of good hands, I played my spots where I had it."

Saleh, who went wire-to-wire as he held the chip lead for the entirety of the final table, had a premonition that he was going to win this tournament before he even arrived: "I've been saying this before I come here; my sister's wedding is Wednesday. If I win this, I'm going to the wedding. It's in Jordan, so, I might be on the airplane tomorrow."

As for his newfound windfall, Saleh said simply, "Poker money stays poker money, I play tournaments all over; I played in the Main Event in Vegas, cashed in it for the first time. I was proud."

Now Saleh has his first HPT Main Event title to add to the growing list of accolades in his poker career.

Final Table Recap

JW Carter's stay at the final table lasted exactly one hand, as his flopped two pair were no match for the flopped straight of Judge Leo Boothe, sending him home in ninth place. The defending HPT Ameristar Vicksburg Main Event champ BJ McBrayer ground a short stack for two hours, but was never able to gain any ground and finally succumbed in eighth place when he lost a flip to Sley Sanchez.

Another flip would spell the end of Boothe's run in seventh place, as his ace-ten couldn't catch up to the pocket fives of Saleh, and Kip Jones followed Boothe out the door in sixth a short time later when his ace-deuce was outkicked by the ace-nine of Shomari Williams. Sanchez fell victim to a bad beat one level later, when his pocket tens were bested by CT Hoffecker's ace-nine after Hoffecker managed to make nines-full. Sanchez was ousted one hand later.

Williams would be next to fall, his king-queen failing to improve against the ace-jack of Jaron Bailey. Bailey then took out Hoffecker one level later, leaving Bailey and Saleh separated by just a few big blinds at the start of heads-up action. As had been the case for most of the day, however, Saleh turned up the heat and ground Bailey down to just under twelve big blinds before the final hand of the tournament commenced.

Bailey found himself all in and at risk with queen-three with a queen-king-five-ace board on the felt, but Saleh had the best of it with his king-four. The ten of clubs on the river was a brick for Bailey and Saleh secured the victory.

"On the first day, we said we were gonna be together at the final table, and here we are!" Saleh told Bailey moments after the river fell to seal Saleh's victory, and the two shared a handshake and were in good spirits after a hard-fought heads up battle.

Season XV of the HPT continues at Ameristar East Chicago August 22 through September 2. PokerNews will once again be there to live report the Main Event. Visit hptpoker.com for more details.

Jaron Bailey

Yousef Saleh limped in from the button, and Jaron Bailey checked his option in the big blind.

Both players checked the {q-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} flop, and Bailey bet 90,000 on the {a-Diamonds} turn. Saleh raised to 290,000, and Bailey tanked for a minute before three-bet shoving for 525,000, which Saleh called.

Jaron Bailey: {q-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}
Yousef Saleh: {k-Hearts}{4-Spades}

Bailey needed a queen or three to survive and continue this heads up duel, but the {10-Clubs} river left Bailey as our runner-up, while Saleh will take home the HPT Ameristar Vicksburg Main Event title!

Jaron Bailey raised to 100,000 on the button, and Yousef Saleh called in the small blind. CT Hoffecker three-bet shoved for 355,000 in the big blind, and Bailey called after a minute in the tank, while Saleh folded.

Hoffecker got no immediate help on the {10-Clubs}{7-Spades}{k-Hearts} flop, but did pick up a gutshot on the {3-Clubs} turn. The {7-Hearts} river failed to improve Hoffecker, and he exits in third place.

Jaron Bailey: {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

Williams got no help on the {2-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop, and was reduced to four outs when Bailey turned top pair with the {a-Clubs}. Williams couldn't hit his gutshot on the {9-Diamonds} river, and we're down to three here in Vicksburg.

Yousef Saleh raised to 90,000 from the cutoff, and Sley Sanchez called off his last 80,000 in the big blind. Shomari Williams made the call in the big blind, as well.

On the {9-Hearts}{j-Spades}{9-Diamonds} flop both players checked, and Williams checked again on the {5-Diamonds} turn. Saleh bet 35,000 and Williams folded.

Sley Sanchez: {q-Hearts}{5-Spades}
Yousef Saleh: {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}

Sanchez needed a queen, jack or five to survive, but Saleh's dominance continued when the {a-Clubs} bricked off on the river.

CT Hoffecker jammed for 400,000 from the small blind, and Sley Sanchez quickly called in the big blind.

CT Hoffecker: {a-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
Sley Sanchez: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Hoffecker made a pair of nines on the {j-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{9-Hearts} flop, but Sanchez was still ahead with his tens. The {9-Diamonds} on the turn propelled Hoffecker out front, and the {a-Hearts} river gave Hoffecker a full house and left Sanchez with under three big blinds.

Shomari Williams raised to 60,000 from under the gun, and Kip Jones three-bet shoved for 155,000 in the big blind. Williams called.

Kip Jones: {a-Clubs}{2-Hearts}
Shomari Williams: {a-Hearts}{9-Spades}

The {7-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{4-Spades} flop was safe for Williams, but the {q-Clubs} turn brought Jones some chop outs. The {5-Hearts} river meant Williams kicker would play, and Jones said, "Good luck everybody," before hitting the rail.

The big blind ante will now be reduced to the size of the small blind for the remainder of the tournament.

Judge Leo Boothe Eliminated in 7th Place ($5,535)

Judge Leo Boothe
Judge Leo Boothe

Shomari Williams raised to 55,000 from the cutoff, and Yousef Saleh called on the button. Judge Leo Boothe three-bet shoved for 340,000 in the big blind, and Williams, who was covered by 40,000, elected to fold. Saleh called.

Judge Leo Boothe: {a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Yousef Saleh: {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds}

Boothe would need to improve for his third HPT Ameristar Vicksburg Final Table to continue, but a {3-Spades}{2-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} flop and turn left Boothe looking for a six-outer to survive.

"Four of spades," Saleh said.

Sure enough, the {4-Spades} river came out, leaving Boothe out in seventh, while Saleh continues his dominance of this final table.

Saleh Dons His Cape and Hero Calls Sanchez

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Yousef Saleh
Yousef Saleh

Sley Sanchez raised to 50,000 from the hijack, and Yousef Saleh called in the big blind.

Saleh checked the {6-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{8-Spades} flop over to Sanchez, who bet 40,000. Saleh check-raised to 80,000, and Sanchez three-bet to 215,000. Saleh called.

Both players checked the {5-Spades} turn, and the {9-Spades} fell on the river. Saleh checked, and Sanchez bet 160,000. Saleh called.

Sanchez tabled {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} for ace-high, and Saleh, undeterred by the four-flush and one-liner straight on the board, held {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for two pair, good enough to take the big pot and jump to a big lead with seven remaining.

BJ McBrayer Eliminated in 8th Place ($4,851)

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
BJ McBrayer
BJ McBrayer

BJ McBrayer jammed for 60,000 from the hijack, and Judge Leo Boothe said he was making a "real loose" call in the big blind before tossing in calling chips.

BJ McBrayer: {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Judge Leo Boothe: {a-Hearts}{4-Spades}

Some chop outs fell for Boothe on the {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} flop, but the {5-Diamonds} turn and {3-Diamonds} river blanked off to give McBrayer the double.

The very next hand, McBrayer ripped his last 144,000 in from middle position, and Sley Sanchez made the call in the big blind.

BJ McBrayer: {3-Spades}{3-Hearts}
Sley Sanchez: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}

McBrayer's pair held on the {2-Spades}{7-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} flop, but the {7-Diamonds} turn opened a host of new outs for Sanchez, giving him both counterfeit outs and a flush draw. The {2-Diamonds} river completed Sanchez's flush, and our defending HPT Ameristar Vicksburg champ falls a few spots shy of defending his crown.
