Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Mike Englert
Mike Englert

The largest day of all four starting flights by a long shot has been completed and the field for Day 2 has been set at HPT Golden Gates $1,100 Main Event. Day 1d saw a total of 318 entries to bring the entire total to 732 entries over four initial flights.

Of the 318 players, 60 players advanced with Maxx Holland bagging a total of 474,500 to find himself as the chip leader for the flight. The other two players to bag over 300,000 were Mike Englert (346,000) and Steve Harvey. Englert was seated in the upstairs overflow room to start the day and by the time those tables broke, he was seen in his seat inside the Golden Gates Poker Parlour with over 200,000. From there, he was moved to a table with Nader Wahdan and was able to take advantage of the action, building his stack to its final resting point for the evening.

Saturday’s flight saw a ton of recognizable faces make it up the mountain at their final shot at advancing to Day 2. Some players to advance in this flight after failing in previous flights include Danny Gonzales (246,500), Nick Pupillo (238,000), Alex Rocha (208,500), Nader Wahdan (150,000), and Chris Moon (114,000).

Other players who found a bag at the end of the day were Naval Subbarayan (274,500), Vincent Moscati (226,00), Jeff Grimes (191,500), and Bryan Devonshire (78,000).

A few players who were not fortunate enough to advance included Aaron Frei, James Pupillo, Craig Casino, and defending champion Ben Brown.

Day 2 will begin Sunday at 11 a.m. local time, one hour earlier than the noon starting time from the initial flights. There will be 129 players returning with 81 players making it into the money. Those who earn a first-level payout will receive $1,917 and payouts will climb from there to the eventual first-place prize of $152,671.

Play will resume at the beginning of Level 16, with blinds of 2,500/5,000 and a 5,000 big-blind ante. Levels
will last 40 minutes throughout the duration of the day with 15-minute breaks at the completion of every three levels. From the time the cards are in the air, action will continue until the official final table of nine has been reached.

Which nine players will find themselves putting chips in bags when Day 2 concludes? Come back to PokerNews for updates along the way as that question is answered.

Craig Casino
Craig Casino

A player in early position raised to 10,000 and saw calls from Craig Casino in middle position, Richard Furfaro to Casino's left, Brendan Hocker in the small blind, and the big blind. The five players saw a flop of {9-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{j-Hearts} and action checked to Casino who shoved all in for around 30,000. Furfaro instantly announced he was all in over the top for around 75,000 and all remaining players folded.

Craig Casino: {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Richard Furfaro: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

Casino found himself up against a set and was in need of hitting his gutshot straight draw to survive. The turn brought the {j-Spades} to give Furfaro a full house and the river {7-Hearts} was the final card of the tournament for Casino.

James Grimes
James Grimes

James Grimes opened to 7,000 from early position and action folded around to James Pupillo who shoved all in for 49,600 from the big blind. Grimes thought for a few seconds before calling.

James Pupillo: {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}
James Grimes: {7-Diamonds}{7-Spades}

Pupillo's coin-flip odds were decreased to needing backdoor straight cards after a seven came in the window on a flop of {7-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{4-Spades}. The turn {10-Clubs} left Pupillo drawing dead while the dealer put out the river {6-Spades} and shipped the pot Grimes' way.

Wahdan Firing

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Nader Wahdan
Nader Wahdan

A player raised to 6,000 from under the gun and was three-bet by Nader Wahdan to 21,000. Action folded back around and the player called, taking action heads up to the flop {3-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. Both players checked.

The turn {9-Diamonds} fell and the under-the-gun player checked to Wahdan, who chose to bet 16,000. His opponent folded and he took down the pot.

Since winning a big pot before the dinner break, Wahdan has now seen his stack grow by another 50 percent or so in the last three levels and he finds himself as one of the chip leaders in the tournament nearing the final break of the night.

Gutfreund's Boat Sank By O'Toole's

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Dave Gutfreund
Dave Gutfreund

Dave Gutfreund communicated that Michael O'Toole had a hand history to share for a pot that had a lot of chips in it, saying it was too painful to recount himself.

According to O'Toole with a little help from tablemate Ryan Dodson, Gutfreund opened to 3,500 from the hijack and O'Toole called out of the small blind. The two saw a flop of {a-}{j-}{8-}-rainbow and O'Toole check-raised Gutfreund's continuation-bet. Gutfreund called.

On the turn {4-Diamonds}, O'Toole fired 19,000 into the middle and Gutfreund raised to 60,000. O'Toole shoved for around 140,000 with Gutfreund calling for around 120,000 effective.

Dave Gutfreund: {8-}{8-}
Michael O'Toole: {a-}{j-}

The two players found themselves in a huge pot between a flopped set versus top two pair. O'Toole had four outs to improve to a full house and hit the {a-} on the river to go Greenstein on Gutfreund and send him to the rail. Meanwhile, O'Toole finds himself at or near the top of the leaderboard with a stack that is closing in on 300,000.

Frei Eliminated by Johnson's Quads

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Aaron Frei
Aaron Frei

There was four-way action on the river with a board reading {8-Spades}{7-Clubs}{a-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and Jason Johnson bet 6,000. Aaron Frei was on his direct left and shoved all in for around 38,000. The two remaining players in the hand, the cutoff and big blind both folded and Johnson quickly called.

Frei tabled {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs} for aces up with a jack kicker.

"Oh, quads?!" he said as Johnson showed {7-Hearts}{7-Spades} at almost the same exact time, showing four of a kind and eliminating Frei from the tournament shortly after the dinner break and the close of registration for the tournament.

Wahdan Doubles Through Pupillo

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Nader Wahdan
Nader Wahdan

Nader Wahdan was seen walking away from his chair leaving a newly-peaked stack of red, T$5,000 chips with a few stacks next to it and some unstacked small-denomination chips in a pile surrounding the stacks.

Jason Vangold was happy to recap the action, saying that Nick Pupillo had opened from the hijack and Wahdan defended his big blind. The two saw a flop of {q-}{5-}{4-} with two hearts and a diamond. Wahdan check-raised Pupillo's 7,500 continuation-bet to 17,500 and Pupillo called.

The turn came {8-Diamonds} and Wahdan continued, betting 38,000. Pupillo raised him all in and he called.

Nader Wahdan: {4-}{4-}
Nick Pupillo: {a-}{q-}

The river fell {q-Diamonds} to give Pupillo trips, though it was not enough to beat Wahdan's full house as he doubled up, leaving Pupillo back to square one.

Ruth Graham
Ruth Graham

A player in early position opened to 1,500 and received calls from a player in middle position, the hijack, Ruth Graham on the button, and both blinds. The dealer announced six players and turned over a flop of {8-Hearts}{j-Spades}{5-Hearts}. Action checked to Graham and she bet 3,000. Only the original raiser called.

The turn came {10-Diamonds} and Graham saw the original raiser check to her. She bet 6,000 and he made the call. The river was {a-Diamonds} and Graham's opponent checked to her again. She fired 15,000 and was immediately called.

Graham tabled {q-Spades}{9-Hearts} for the turned straight and her opponent mucked, giving her credit for her hand.
