Song Takes Chip Lead

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

On the river with the board showing {10-Spades}{q-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{a-Diamonds}, Stephen Song made it 13k and the button tanked before eventually making the call.

Song showed {k-}{j-} for a straight and the player on the button mucked his hand.

Song took the pot but more importantly moved into the chip lead.

Snuffer Busts In Set Over Set

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Iverson Snuffer was roaming the poker room and recounted his bust out hand. He and his opponent got it all in preflop. Snuffer held {10-}{10-} vs {j-}{j-}. According to Snuffer the flop included a {j-}, making the {10-} on the turn meaningless when the river was a blank.

"I'll try again tomorrow," Snuffer said.

This $1,650 buy-in Main Event is just one tournament in the HPT Columbus, which started last weekend. There have been several side events including Event #3: $200 7-Game Mix, a tournament that attracted 55 runners and created an $8,965 prize pool.

That was paid out to the top eight players, and in the end, a three-way deal was struck that saw Paul Shaneyfelt walk away with the title and $2,517 in prize money.

Here’s a look at how the final table wound up:

Asbury Still Alive

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

The board was dealt showing {8-Clubs}{4-Spades}{4-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{8-Clubs} and Adam Asbury went all in for his remaining 12k with 22k in the pot already.

The player on the button tanked and the floor was called giving him 30 seconds to act. He then made the call for the 12k and Asbury showed him the {10-}{4-Diamonds} for a full house. The button mucked and Asbury was pushed the pot.

Get to Know Reigning HPT Player of the Year Aaron Johnson

Aaron Johnson with Jeremy Smith

One of the best stories of 2018 was the incredible year of Minnesota’s Aaron Johnson. Back in May, PokerNews spoke with Johnson about leading the Player of the Year races on both Season 9 of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) and Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Season XIV.

Over the next seven months, Johnson maintained his lead on the MSPT, and while he lost the HPT lead for a bit, he ultimately ended with it thanks to a deep run in the season finale. That allowed Johnson to become the first player to ever win POY titles on two different tours in the same year.

For doing so, Johnson won a $10,000 prize package for each tour.

“It feels amazing,” Johnson told PokerNews. “Coming into the year I certainly wanted to make a run at MSPT POY (which has always been a goal of mine), but I never imagined that I’d be in contention for multiple POY titles. To actually achieve it is unreal.”

Unfortunately, Johnson isn't here at the HPT Columbus today.

For more on the reigning HPT POY, check out his full interview here on PokerNews.

King Takes it on the Turn

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

With the board showing {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{7-Diamonds}, Caleb King made it 5,300 and the middle-position player tanked before mucking.

King took down a pot of 19,500 to increase his chip stack to 155k. Not much of a hand but it gave us a good excuse to update you on King's big stack.
