Craig Welko Captures Wins Three Side Events at HPT St. Louis Stop

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Craig Welko captures his third title!
Craig Welko captures his third title!

A series of side events played out leading up to the Main Event and amazingly Craig Welko managed to win three of them.

His heater began in Event #1: $350 No-Limit Hold’em, a tournament that drew a Missouri state record 1,283 entries. There was a six-way deal worked and Welko was not only deemed the champion, but took the most prize money with $37,402. It marked the biggest score of his aspiring career.

Then in Event #6: $200 NLH Bounty ($50 bounties), he bested a 191-entry field to win his second title. While he wasn’t able to get anything going in the Main Event, Welko closed out the stop strong by topping a 189-entry to win Event #12: $300 NLH Bounty ($100 bounties) for $5,200 after a three-way deal.

Prior to the HPT St. Louis, Welko had $164,612 in live tournament earnings including a prior career-best of $33,000 for finishing third in a $550 NLH event at last year’s Wynn summer Classic.

Greg Wood Eliminated in 9th Place ($14,471)

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Greg Wood - 9th Place
Greg Wood - 9th Place

We just had our first elimination of the day.

After Tim Burden raised to 80,000 from middle position, Greg Wood shoved all in from the cutoff position.

Action folded around to Stephen Green, and he made the call from his big blind.

Burden then asked for a count, and once the dealer confirmed 415,000, Burden folded, leaving Wood and Green heads up.

Wood: {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
Green: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}

The flop of {6-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} was no help to Wood, but the {10-Spades} gave him outs to a straight.

Unfortunately, the {4-Spades} was not one of those outs, and Wood was the first elimination at the final table.

Heine Doubles Through Burden

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante

Tim Burden raised to 85,000 UTG +1 and action folded around to Keith Heine who shoved all in for 365,000. The big blind folded and Burden called.

Heine: {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Burden: {k-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

Heine's tournament was at risk but he held on after the board after it ran out {8-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} and his ace high gave him the double up.

Joe Landazzi Eliminated in 8th Place ($17,120)

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Joe Landazzi - 8th Place
Joe Landazzi - 8th Place

Joe Landazzi raised to 80,000 from middle position.

Action then folded around to Kou Vang, who called from his big blind.

After Vang checked the {5-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts} flop, Landazzi shoved all in and was immediately called by Vang.

Landazzi had a big overpair to the board, but Vang had flopped top set.

Landazzi: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}
Vang: {5-Clubs}{5-Hearts}

The {6-Hearts} turn was a good card for Landazzi, giving him more outs.

However, the {j-Diamonds} wasn't one of them, and he was our second elimination of the day.

Vang Takes Pot from Heine

Level 25 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante

Kou Vang raised to 85,000 under the gun and action folded to Keith Heine in the big blind who called.

Fireworks started after a {5-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{5-Hearts} flop when Heine check-raised Vang's bet of 80,00 to 205,000. Vang then four-bet to 330,000. Henie thought while counting out his chips and then folded his hand.
