Tim Burden Leads Final Table After Day 2 of HPT St. Louis

Level 23 : 15,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Tim Burden
Tim Burden

Day 2 of the 2019 Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) St. Louis came to its conclusion playing down from 81 players to its final nine. Leading the way is 2018 Indiana State Poker Champion Tim Burden who bagged up a massive 3.8 million.

Burden first got a monster pot after he flopped a pair of sixes and then turned trips and cracked Josh Mullins' pocket kings. Burden’s luck kept rolling as he obtained 25% of the chips in play after he and Danny Hoeft got into the largest pot of the evening.

It began when Burden raised to 40,000 and Hoeft, three-bet to 200,000. Action folded back to Burden who called the raise. A flop of {9-Spades}{2-Hearts}{6-Spades} was check-called by Burden after Hoeft bet 200,000. The dealer burned and turned the {4-Clubs} and Burden slammed down a bet of 500,000 and Hoeft called. Burden moved all in for 1.099 million after the {8-Hearts} came on the river and Hoeft, who had 1.04 million, called with the {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}. It was no good though as the 2018 MSPT Indiana State Poker Champion had flopped a set with his {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}.

Others joining Burden at the final table include MSPT Hall of Famer Kou Vang. MSPT Meskwaki Champ Keith Heine, and Greg Wood.

Peter Brooks was the 46th player out making him the bubble boy. Cameron Douglas Eliminated in 10th Place ($11,047)

Level 23 : 15,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Cameron Douglas
Cameron Douglas

As a result of back-to-back brutal hands, Cameron Douglas went out one spot short of the final table.

In the first hand, Douglas raised to 75,000 from the under the gun position, and was called by Keith Heine from the cutoff and Tim Burden from his big blind.

Burden checked the {10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} flop, Douglas continued for 75,000 and was called by both players.

After Burden checked on the {7-Spades} turn, Douglas shoved all in, which got a call from the shorter stack of Heine and a fold from Burden.

The players tabled their hands.

Douglas: {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}
Heine: {q-Clubs}{j-Spades}

Douglas had turned the jack-straight, but Heine had flopped the queen-high straight.

The {k-Clubs} river only improved Heine's hand, securing him the near triple-up and leaving Douglas as the short stack.

Unfortunately for Douglas, he would be eliminated on the very next hand.

Action folded around to Burden in the small blind, he called and Douglas shoved all in for 325,000.

Burden thought for a moment, playing with three 100,000 chips, and finally tossed them in for the call.

Douglas: {a-Clubs}{5-Hearts}
Burden: {j-Hearts}{6-Hearts}

The board ran out {5-Spades}{j-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}, which eliminated Douglas and left the remaining nine players to play on the nationally televised final table.

Matt Dougherty Eliminated in 11th Place ($11,047)

Matt Dougherty - 11th Place
Matt Dougherty - 11th Place

Matt Dougherty moved all in for 205,000 under the gun and action folded to chip leader Tim Burden, who called from the small blind.

Burden: {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Dougherty: {k-Spades}{q-Hearts}

Burden was out in front but Dougherty had two live cards. The {q-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{j-Hearts} flop paired both players but Burden's aces were best. Dougherty had a lot of outs but watched helplessly as the {3-Spades} bricked the turn followed by the {9-Clubs} on the river.

The final 10 players will now combine down to the unofficial final table.

After Dave Simon raised to 65,000 from middle position, Josh Shmerl re-raised all in on the button.

Action folded back around to Simon, he made the call and the players tabled their hands.

Simon: {10-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Shmerl: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

The {8-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{7-Clubs} flop put Shmerl in the lead, but things changed on the {10-Hearts} turn.

The {a-Spades} river gave two Shmerl top two pair, which unfortunately wasn't good enough.

The dealer counted down the stacks, Shmerl had Simon slightly covered by 95,000.

Two hands later Shmerl went all in from the hijack, Keith Heine then re-shoved from the button and the blinds got out of the way.

Heine: {a-Hearts}{5-Hearts}
Shmerl: {q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}

The board ran out {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}, eliminating Shmerl from the tournament.

We arrive at the table after a {a-Spades}{8-Spades}{3-Diamonds} flop.

Action was checked around to Kou Vang on the button who bet 50,000. Keith Heine three-bet to 175,000. Jimmy Fondy counted his chips and announced all-in for less. Vang folded leaving Fondy heads up against Heine.

Fondy: {a-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}
Heine: {a-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}

The {3-Hearts} on the turn and {q-Spades} on the river were no help for Fondy and he was eliminated in 16th place.

Gyan Gurung had been nursing a short stack for a while and finally took a stand by jamming his last 100K or so holding the {9-Spades}{7-Spades}.

Bill Byrnes looked him up with the {a-}{q-}, and while Gurung was drawing to two live cards, he failed to pair one as the board ran out an unhelpful {10-}{k-}{4-}{6-}{2-}.

Dan Hoeft - 18th Place
Dan Hoeft - 18th Place

The biggest pot of the tournament just went down and it contained about 25% of the chips in play.

It began when Tim Burden raised to 40,000 and his neighbor to the left, Danny Hoeft, three-bet to 200,000. Action folded back to Burden and he called to see a {9-Spades}{2-Hearts}{6-Spades} flop. Burden check-called a bet of 200,000 and the dealer burned and turned the {4-Clubs}.

Burden slammed down a bet of 500,000 and Hoeft called to see the {8-Hearts} river.

Burden moved all in for 1.099 million and Hoeft, who had 1.04 million, opted to call off with the {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}. It was no good though as Burden, the 2018 MSPT Indiana State Poker champion, had flopped a set with his {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}.
