Hartigan Heroically Fires Two Bullets in Record-Breaking Day 1c

Level 10 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
James Hartigan
James Hartigan

Day 1c has reached its conclusion in the €1,150 Main Event at the 2023 Irish Open and it was by far the largest starting flight, getting more players than the previous two combined. A total of 1,108 entries were recorded at the Royal Dublin Society with 447 players advancing to Day 2 on Saturday, April 8.

At the time of writing the late-night Day 1d has also just finished up, adding another 247 entries, of which 132 advanced. All four starting flights combined have generated an already record-breaking 2,323 entries, creating a prize pool of at least €2,264,925 and smashing the €1 million guarantee. At least 930 players will be present for Day 2, but late registration is still open until the start of the day, so it is only then that the final figures will be known.

When Day 1c ended, it was Germany’s Julian Bartholmes who ended up as the chip leader with a stack of 278,500 chips. Bartholmes has just over €10,000 in recorded live winnings so he has made a great start in what might become his break-out tournament.

Other players that bagged on Day 1c include PokerStars Ambassadors Benjamin Spragg (148,900) and Fintan Hand (67,200), 2022 Irish Open winner Steve O’Dwyer (106,000), and Benny Glaser (62,000), who won the Luxon Pay €5,000 High Roller earlier this week.

Long-time commentator and multiple-time GPA winner James Hartigan was seen at the tables instead of in the booth today. Hartigan received a freeroll for the tournament but busted with trips against a full house. He enthusiastically reentered only to get his pocket aces cracked in a preflop all-in situation.

Day 1d saw 131 players advance, led by Greg King with 192,500 chips. Other notables who made it through the turbo flight include Griffin Benger (55,300) and Will Kassouf (33,000).

Players that did not make it through Day 1c or 1d include PokerStars Ambassadors Parker Talbot and Georgina James. They will have to make a new entry at the start of Day 2 if they still want to have a shot at the trophy and the bulk of the prize pool.

The cards will go back in the air Saturday, April 8th at noon local for Day 2. The blinds will be resuming on level 11 at 600/1,200 with a 1,200 big blind ante. The levels will be 60 minutes long throughout the day and 10 levels will be on the schedule for Day 2.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be with you throughout Day 2 and beyond to bring all of the action from the great Irish capital.

Irish Open Tournament Room

Julian Bartholmes raised to 2,300 from under the gun and picked up calls from Laurance Ryan, Sean Creighton and Michael Johnston.

The flop came {7-Spades}{10-Spades}{4-Spades} and Bartholmes bet out 3,500. Ryan called, Creighton called and then Johnston pushed all in for 24,000. Bartholmes flat called, Ryan bailed and Johnston made the call.

The turn came the {9-Hearts} and Bartholmes pushed all in for the rest of Johnston's stack. Johnston made the call and players flipped over their cards.

Johnston had {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} for the nut flush draw with overcards and Bartholmes flipped over {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} for a full house to near enough tripled up to over 200,000 chips. Creighton and Johnston both busted the tournament right before Day 1c ended.

Pilkington Doubles Up Through Spraggy, Talbot Highly Amused

Level 10 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Benjamin Spragg
Benjamin Spragg

Benjamin Spragg raised to 1,700 from late position and Jessica Pilkington reraised to 6,000 from the small blind, which was most of her stack.

Spraggy said "go on then" and moved all in for the rest of Pilkington's chips. Players flipped their cards.

Jessica Pilkington: {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Benjamin Spragg: {10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}

The flop came {2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{j-Spades}. Parker Talbot was stood behind Spraggy for moral support. "You're dead," laughed Parker. The turn came the {k-Diamonds}. Parker laughed harder. "You're so dead".

The river was the {4-Diamonds} to give Spragg the ten high flush and Pilkington the queen high flush.

Pilkington doubled up, Talbot walked away, and Spraggy said, "You didn't see anything".

Hand Limps in Kings

Level 9 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Fintan Hand
Fintan Hand

The action on the feature table folded around to Fintan Hand in the small blind. He chose to limp in for 800 and big blind Tudor Neacsu checked his option.

The flop came down {6-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{a-Spades} and Hand checked to Neacsu, who bet 1,500. Hand quickly called and the two of them saw the turn of {a-Hearts}. Both players swiftly checked and the {7-Hearts} river was dealt.

Hand now put a bet out worth about the size of the pot: 5,500 chips. Neacsu thought it over for a bit but eventually called. Hand tabled {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} and the second-best starting hand in hold 'em was good enough to win him the pot.

Miscikowski Misses with His Three-Bet

Level 8 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
David Miscikowski
David Miscikowski

Alexander Regler made it 1,800 from the hijack and small blind David Miscikowski three-bet to 5,100. Regler made the call and the two saw a {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}{3-Hearts} flop, which both players checked.

The {j-Hearts} turn came and Miscikowski checked to Regler again. Regler found it time to bet this time, putting forth 4,500 chips. Miscikowski called and the {6-Hearts} river rolled off.

This card slowed the action down again, with both players checking once more. Regler showed his {a-Spades}{q-Spades} first and it was good enough to scoop this small three-bet pot.

De Jong Tries to Be a Hero, Doubles Simpson in Huge Pot

Level 6 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante
Ian Simpson
Ian Simpson

Willem de Jong and Ian Simpson were on the river with a huge sum of 36,000 chips already in the middle. The board read {5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{8-Spades} and De Jong had checked from early position to Simpson in the seat next over.

Simpson piled in his remaining stack of 33,100. This size made De Jong suspicious. ''Why so much?'', he asked Simpson before putting in some calling chips moments later.

Simpson excitedly declared ''Kings'', as he showed {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}. De Jong was forced to show his {4-Clubs}{3-Clubs} for an attempted hero call with bottom pair and was left with a stack of around 12 big blinds.

O'Dwyer Eliminated After Big Preflop All-In

Level 6 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante
Steve O'Dwyer
Steve O'Dwyer

Steve O'Dwyer raised to 1,200 from the button and Devin D'souza made it 3,600 to go from the small blind. O'Dwyer then put in the four-bet jam, barely covering his opponent's 36,400 stack.

Dsouza tanked for a long time but ultimately called.

Devin D'souza: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Steve O'Dwyer: {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

A big flip was happening between the two players. D'souza sprung ahead with the window card of {a-Spades} and won the pot as the board ran out {5-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}.

O'Dwyer was left with only a few big blinds, which later went in with {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds} in a four-way pot. O'Dwyer did not emerge as the victor on the {4-Spades}{j-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} board and he immediately sought the reentry desk.
