Leaning Tower

Tread lightly...
Tread lightly...
In poker, chips are weapons. The more chips you have, the more bullets you have in your gun. Amass enough of them and you can construct a fortress from your chips, a structure so imposing that other players might think twice before considering an assault.

It's still way too early for any player to have enough chips to feel comfortable. And one player is adding to the sense of unease by stacking his chips into one tall tower, which gently sways back and forth every time someone walks past. Other players at the table have slid cautious looks his way, not so much out of chip-envy but because they're wondering when the tower's gonna come a-tumblin' down.

Odds and Ends

I took a quick stroll through the tournament area, here's what has been going on...

Zach "Umbrella Man" Hall is sitting on 9,500.

Dennis Phillips told me that he has 12,000 in chips. He was moved to Roberto Brenes' table.

Roberto Brenes (Humberto's son) lost a pot with {A-Spades} {J-Hearts}. The board read {A-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {7-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} {9-Hearts}. Roberto checked and his opponent bet 3,000 on the river. Brenes made a crying call with two pair, aces and sevens. His opponent tabled {Q-Hearts} {7-Hearts} for trip sevens and he won the pot. Roberto slipped to under 9,000.

Eddie Sabat, APPT Macau Champion, took a hit and his stack is under 4,000.

And what's a poker tournament without Humberto Brenes crooning to his table?

The Field is Set

There are 151 players at the tables for Day 1b, and so the grand total of entrants for the PokerStars.net LAPT Mar del Plata tournament is 291. We'll have prize-pool information when that becomes available.

Joe Hachem Doubles Up

On the last hand before the break, Joe Hachem was all in with pocket jacks against Big Slick. His jacks held up and he avoided elimination. Before the hand began, Hachem's chip count was under 5,000. After his double-up, the 2005 WSOP Main Event Champion is now back to his starting stack.

Fathers and Sons

"Dad, can I borrow a few hundred pesos?"
"Dad, can I borrow a few hundred pesos?"
Roberto Brenes is sitting one table away from his father, Humberto Brenes. Humberto is considered the Godfather of Costa Rican poker. In conventional poker terms, Brenes is sort of like the Latin version of Doyle Brunson.

Since the father and son duo are sitting in close proximity to one another, it's not uncommon to see the two chatting it up in between hands. There are some similarities between the two including the trademarked PokeStars visor with a stitched Costa Rican flag. However, unlike his garrulous father, Roberto is extremely quiet at the table.

Dennis Phillips Gets the Call

Dennis Phillips

During play yesterday it seemed like everyone couldn't wait to call down Chris Moneymaker. Players enjoyed sitting with the 2003 World Champion and weren't about to lay down a hand that might earn them a good story as well as a pile of chips.

It seems that Dennis Phillips might be getting a bit of the same treatment. After the {10-Hearts} {8-Clubs} {10-Diamonds} flop, a player sitting across the table from Phillips bet 500 and Phillips smooth-called. Both players checked the {4-Diamonds} on the turn, and when the {6-Hearts} came on the river Phillips bet 2,000 after his opponent again checked.

The two stared at each other with good humor, the other player smiling behind the hand he used to cover his mouth. Phillips riffled chips in his hands as his opponent took a couple of minutes to consider the situation. In the end he couldn't resist a call and Phillips turned over {J-Clubs} {10-Clubs} for trips. His opponent sighed as he tossed his cards in the muck and Phillips picked up a tidy pot.
