Martha Eneida Herrera Gonzalez Lays Down Big Slick

Martha on Day 1a
Martha on Day 1a
Ace-king is one of the most difficult hands to play in poker. Many pros won't even play it, while other over value the hand.

Martha Eneida Herrera Gonzalez opened with a raise and Marcelo Giorgetta quickly reraised. Martha tanked for a few minutes before she folded {A-Hearts} {K-Spades} face-up. Marcelo Giorgetta didn't show his cards but he insisted that he was ahead.

Mark Ioli Eliminates Mario Lopez

A back-and-forth hand saw Mario Lopez's tournament come to a cruel end. He was all in with {A-Spades} {K-Hearts} to Mark Ioli's {Q-Spades} {Q-Hearts}, and that classic race seemed destined to go Lopez's way when the flop came {A-Clubs} {2-Spades} {8-Spades}. The dealer paused to let the cameras record the scene, and then he burned and turned over the {Q-Diamonds}. Lopez jumped from his seat as that card fell and during another brief pause he reached across the table and shook Ioli's hand. The dealer placed the {7-Hearts} on the felt to conclude the hand and Lopez headed for the rail.

Ivan Raich Eliminated; Mark Ioli Runs Good

Mark 'Semi-Pro' Ioli
Mark 'Semi-Pro' Ioli
Ivan Raich from Argentina was short-stacked and all in against young American, Mark Ioli.

Raich: {5-Clubs} {5-Hearts}
Ioli: {A-Spades} {A-Hearts}

Raich turned to the dealer and pleaded, "Cinco! Cinco! Cinco!"

Ioli took a deep breath as the dealer fanned out the flop. The {A-Diamonds} was the door card and the complete flop was {A-Diamonds} {6-Diamonds} {2-Clubs}. Ioli solidified his lead with a set of aces. The turn was the {4-Diamonds} and Raich picked up a gutshot. The river fell the {7-Hearts}. Ioli won the pot and Raich headed to the rail.

Alex Brenes Left With a Chip and a Chair

Almost literally, too. The last hope of the Brenes clan to capture the LAPT Mar del Plata Main Event was all in with {A-Clubs} {J-Spades} to Juan Pablo Reverter's {A-Spades} {K-Hearts}. When the flop came {J-Clubs} {6-Spades} {Q-Clubs} Reverter raised his hands to the heavens in disbelief, but the turn brought the {K-Spades} to put him back in the lead and elicit a wry smile from Brenes. The {4-Hearts} fell on the river and the dealer had to count down both stacks to see if Brenes was indeed out.

Indeed he wasn't--he had enough to pay the blind and ante on the next hand and doubled up with {J-Spades} {4-Spades} against {A-Diamonds} {6-Spades}. And it looks like he might've just doubled up again. But he still has a long, long, long, long way to go to get back on his feet.
