Day 2 Started

Big Names and a Big Stack Headline Day 2

Nicolas Fierro Gottner
Nicolas Fierro Gottner

Welcome back to Day 2 of the LAPT Season 3 Grand Final. Action is set to resume at 12:00 ARG here at South America’s largest casino, the City Center Casino in Rosario, Argentina. Yesterday saw 254 players take their shot at an LAPT title including some of the game’s biggest names. By night’s end, only about 130 hopefuls remained.

Leading the way with a monster chip stack, more than double his nearest competitor, is Nicolas “PKaiser” Fierro with 278,200. The next two biggest stacks belong to Mario Niciforo (130,000) and Arnaldo Mesas (116,600), but even combined they still cannot surpass Fierro. Also returning for Day 2 are a number of recognizable names including Andre Akkari (71,900), Terrence Chan (67,700), Angel Guillen (47,800), Jose “Nacho” Barbero (42,200), Dennis Phillips (33,800), and Veronica Dabul (30,700).

Two of the biggest names in the LAPT are also among the Day 1 survivors. Jose “Nacho” Barbero won back-to-back Main Events at the LAPT Punta del Este and LAPT Lima stops, earning $529,330 for his efforts, and solidifying his reputation as one of the best. Today the Argentinean pro will be going for his third LAPT title of the season. Meanwhile, Mattias Habernig (50,300), who emerged victorious in the LAPT Florianopolis last month, is attempting to match Barbero’s feat of claiming back-to-back LAPT titles and has put himself in decent position to do so. Will two be able to crack the top 40 and win their share of the $1,176,200 prizepool, $322,280 of which goes to first? We will likely know later today as we attempt to play down to the final 24 players.

and running. Cards are in the air as the 126 Day 2 survivors play toward the money. They'll burst the bubble at 40 players and keep on trucking until they reach the top 24.

The Rich Get Richer

Nicolas Fierro Gottner, who entered the day as the overwhelming chip leader thanks to a late night surge on Day 1, has picked up right where he left off. We picked up the action on a flop of {6-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} with about 15,000 in the pot.

Gottner, in the small blind, was heads-up against the player in the big blind and checked. The big blind bet 14,000 and Gottner made the call. When the {7-Diamonds} hit the turn, Gottner checked and the big blind shipped his entire stack of about 35,000 into the pot. Gottner quickly called and turned over {3-Spades}{5-Spades} for a straight while the big blind was left drawing dead with his {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}. The {5-Diamonds} was put out on the river and Gottner took down another monster pot to add to his chip stack. He now has approximately 340,000.

Akkari Swiping Blinds

Andre Akkari entered the day with a decent stack and has been putting it to good use. In a recent hand, action folded to Akkari in the cutoff. He promptly put in a raise to 2,300 and managed to swipe the blinds and antes, bringing his stack to aorund 68,000. However, things might not be so easy as the day progresses considering he is seated at the same table as our chip leader, Nicolas Fierro Gottner.

So long, Tim
So long, Tim

EPT Copenhagen champion Tim Vance was one of the afternoon's early casualties. He departed in unknown circumstances to hit the cash game tables and check out the side events.

Akkari Backs Down

The player in Seat 8 raised to 2,500 from middle position and action folded to Andre Akkari on the button. He put in a raise to 6,000 and both blinds got out of the way. Seat 8 asked for a count only to discover Akkari had him covered. Nonetheless, Seat 8 pushed all of his chips, a total of 37,500, into the pot. In order to call, Akkari would have to commit about half his chips. He thought better of it and tossed his cards in the muck, leaving himself with about 64,000.

Messing With Fire

Action folded to the button who put in a raise to 2,500. Our chip leader, Nicolas Fierro Gottner, was in the small blind and refused to let his chips go so easily. He decided to raise to 6,500 and was quite surprised when the big blind moved all-in for around 50,000. The button quickly folded and action was back on Gottner. He certainly could have afforded to make the call but instead tossed his hand into the muck.

The big blind then showed {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}. Could showing such a marginal hand to the chip leader be a good idea? We'll have to wait and see if the fireworks continue at Gottner's table.
