Negreanu Busts Mahoney in Massive Hand

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Wow. Wow! WOW! Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu just eliminated Patrick Mahoney in a massive, massive hand.

The action started with Caio Cesar Pimenta raising from early position to 10,500. Negreanu made the call from the cutoff seat and then action folded to Mahoney in the big blind. He put in a three-bet to 36,500. Pimenta got out of the way before Negreanu made the call.

The flop produced the {Q-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and Mahoney led with a bet of 38,000. Negreanu didn't go anywhere and stayed in with a call to see fourth street. On the turn, the {J-Clubs} landed on the board and Mahoney checked. Negreanu opted to check behind and give a free river card.

On the river, the {5-Hearts} fell. Mahoney took a few seconds and then checked. Negreanu began counting out chips and arranged them next to his stack. He then slid out a bet of 77,000. After a few moments, Mahoney check-raised all in, verbally announcing his action. Negreanu's headphones came flying off of his head as he exclaimed, "Really?!?!"

A short few moments later, he pointed at Mahoney's stack while looking towards the dealer and said, "Count it."

The dealer began breaking down Mahoney's chip stack. He counted it out and added things up to 197,500. Negreanu confirmed the count and then tanked for a little prior to saying, "Doesn't seem possible."

After a couple minutes in the tank, Negreanu mentioned, "I don't have a clue yet... and that's not good."

Another couple minutes passed and Negreanu began thinking out loud as he so often does at the table when he's in tank situations. "You could have like ace-king with the ace of clubs," he said. "That, or the nuts."

Another few moments went by before he questioned, "Would you do that with aces? That might be, you might have aces."

Some more time passed and then Negreanu mentioned that he felt Mahoney might be from Canada. He corrected himself and said maybe the East Coast of the United States. This is when Mahoney broke his silence and responded to tell Negreanu he wasn't from either. Negreanu took some more time and then seemed to have an epiphany of sorts.

"Oh my god!" he said. "I just remember if I lose, I can still do this tonight!" and acted out some dance moves. "If I lose, I can just go to Carnival," he went on. Mahoney gave a smirk, while the rest of the table laughed at Negreanu's comment. Then Negreanu said, "I have to call," and made the call.

"You win," was all Mahoney could say. After that, Negreanu tabled the {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for two pair, sixes and fives. Mahoney showed the {A-Clubs}{8-Spades} for ace high and Negreanu won the pot.

Negreanu had Mahoney covered and raked in the massive amount of chips. When it was all said and done, Negreanu's stack sat right around 625,000 in chips. That's a ridiculous amount and has Negreanu over three times the average stack.

Negreanu Thinking Royal Thoughts

Caio Pimenta limped into the pot from middle position, and Daniel Negreanu made the raise from the cutoff seat. When it folded back to Pimenta, he snuck in a reraise, and Negreanu flatted to see the flop.

It came {10-Hearts} {K-Hearts} {6-Diamonds}, and Pimenta continued out with what looked like 63,000. Negreanu announced that he was all in with his monster stack, and Pimenta instantly called off his last 208,000 to put himself at risk. He was ahead, but it was a good sweat.

Showdown
Pimenta: {A-Clubs} {A-Spades}
Negreanu: {A-Hearts} {Q-Hearts}

Yikes. Pimenta's overpair had him poised for a double, but he needed to fade the hearts and jacks left in the deck to avoid elimination. The turn came the {10-Clubs}, a safe card for the at-risk player, and Negreanu repeated his situation aloud: "Royal draw."

That draw never came in as the river {8-Spades} was the wrong shade and the wrong shape. Negreanu was accepting of the result as it was an unavoidable spot once the flop came. Pimenta was more than accepting, throwing his hands up in celebration and then running over to leap into the arms of a friend on the rail. Quite literally. It was a sight to behold, but Pimenta returned quickly to stack up the chip-leading pot.

He's got about 530,000 now, while Negreanu takes a tumble back to 375,000. It must be comforting to know you can lose a 100bb pot and still have nearly twice the chip average, and we're sitting here wondering what might have been if Kid Poker had found an out on that river.

Fernandez Gone

Leo Fernandez eliminated
Leo Fernandez eliminated

The tournament just lost Team PokerStars Pro Leo Fernandez. He got all his money in on a flop of {8-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} holding the {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. Unfortunately for him, Felipe Morbiducci held pocket nines and was in front. The nines held for Morbiducci and he won the hand to send Fernandez out the door in 32nd place.

After-Dinner Poker

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante

The players have mostly wandered back into the room, and they're ready for some more poker. We've got 30 players left, and Day 2 will conclude when we hit 24.

Pimenta and Negreanu

Most of the interest is up on the featured table where nearly everyone is sitting with an above-average stack. The table includes Humberto Brenes, Caio Pimenta, and Daniel Negreanu, so we're spending the lion's share of our time sweating the action up there.

In an early after-dinner pot, we watched Caio Pimenta open to 15,000 from the button, and Daniel Negreanu defended his big blind to see a heads-up flop. It went check-check through the {7-Spades} {6-Diamonds} {6-Clubs}, and Negreanu led out with 21,000 chips behind the {10-Spades} turn. Pimenta called, and Negreanu went back to a check on the {2-Clubs} river.

After about a moment of thought, Pimenta asked, "Should I value bet ace-king?"

"Value bet ace-king?!" Negreanu answered back incredulously. With that, Pimenta flicked 15,000 into the pot, and Negreanu quickly surrendered. Pimenta flashed his airball {4-Hearts} {5-Hearts}, and Negreanu disclosed the contents of his folded hand, too. "It would have been hard to call with king-high," he smirked. "I had king-high."

Victor Versus Vitor

Shark chips
Shark chips

It was a limped pot in a battle of the blinds that saw Victor Talamini and Vitor Torres see a heads-up flop. It came out {9-Clubs} {7-Hearts} {4-Clubs}, and the betting action somehow resulted in Torres getting himself all in for 154,000 total. Talamini was right there with the covering stack and the {A-Spades} {9-Diamonds}, and Torres' {Q-Spades} {10-Clubs} had him drawing to six outs for the double.

Turn: {10-Hearts}

Well, that's a start. Talamini couldn't believe it as he cursed his luck and spun away from the table in frustration. Now it was he who was drawing from behind, and the river {2-Diamonds} was a blank to part him with a big chunk of his stack.
