And don’t forget about the slew of parties around the Portomaso Casino area like, for example, the MPF Opening Cocktail Party tonight at Quarterdeck in the beautiful Hilton hotel.

Jorstad Sits Straight

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Espen Uhlen Jorstad
Espen Uhlen Jorstad

The board read {4-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{9-Hearts} with a pot containing around 16,000 already. Espen Uhlen Jorstad had checked in the small blind and Michal Wilczynski was considering what to do in the big blind. After a while, Wilczynski opted to also check. Jorstad tabled {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs} for the pair of jacks and improved to two pair on the river and that was enough to scoop up the pot.

"I wish I could sit as straight as you! Not all slumped over like I normally do!" Clint Sammut exclaimed for Jorstad to respond with a laugh.

Bensimhon Catches the Bluff

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Eyal Bensimhon
Eyal Bensimhon

The player in mid-position raised to 2,500 and Eyal Bensimhon defended his big blind.

The flop came {3-Spades}{4-Spades}{3-Hearts}, Bensimhon check-raised the 2,200 bet of his opponent to 7,000 which was called.

The turn was the {5-Clubs}, now Bensimhon took over the initiative and bet 13,000 which was called by the initial raiser.

The river completed the board with the {7-Diamonds}, Bensimhon checked, the mid-position player shoved for 32,000 and Bensimhon tanked. After a while, Bensimhon decided to make the call for his opponent to show {j-Spades}{8-Spades} for the bluff. Bensimhon held {9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} for two pair, sevens and treys, to eliminate his opponent.

Sammut Takes Haverkamp Out

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Clint Sammut
Clint Sammut

Francesco Cortorillo raised to 5,500 from mid-position and was called by Clint Sammut in the cutoff. Ronald Haverkamp shoved all in from the big blind and Cortorillo asked for a count. The dealer confirmed Haverkamp had 16,200 behind. Cortorillo grabbed his bet back and decided to four-bet to 35,000. Sammut took a few seconds before announcing he was also all-in. Cortorillo asked for a count and the dealer confirmed Sammut had 84,900 in total. Cortorillo took some time before deciding to give his hand up.

"You have pocket sixes?" Sammut asked Haverkamp.

"Off course!" Haverkamp replied before flipping over {6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} indeed.

Sammut jumped up from his seat "I don't even care if I lose this now, I put you on sixes and I was right!"

Sammut himself held {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}.

"I had fives," Cortorillo said with relief showing all over his face.

Some of the other players of the other tables came over to see what was happening on this table as the dealer ran out the {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{a-Spades} on the flop.

"Split pot," Sammut said.

The turn was the {q-Diamonds} which didn't change the situation as Sammut was still ahead.

The river completed the board with the {3-Hearts} and Haverkamp and Sammut wished each other good luck as Haverkamp left the table.

Wilczynski Takes Jorstad Out

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 4,000 ante
Espen Uhlen Jorstad
Espen Uhlen Jorstad

Espen Uhlen Jorstad raised to 6,000 from under the gun and Michal Wilczynski three-bet to 16,500 from the hijack. Action folded back to Jorstad who counted out his stack and then decided to shove for 78,500 in total, Wilczynski called almost immediately.

Espen Uhlen Jorstad: {A-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Michal Wilczynski: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}

The flop came {k-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{6-Clubs} for Wilczynski to hit a set of kings immediately. Jorstad needed to hit a runner-runner straight or flush to stay alive.

The turn was the {q-Diamonds} which meant that Jorstad was drawing dead and the {8-Diamonds} on the river was just a formality to complete the board. Jorstad might be back tomorrow for Day 1B.

Jakubcik Claims Chip Lead; Malta's Sammut, Davey, Bensimhon, and Gumz All Find Bags

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 4,000 ante
Clint Sammut
Clint Sammut

The first-ever day of the brand new Malta Poker Festival is in the books after 14 levels of 45 minutes each. In total, 302 players flocked to the beautiful Portomaso Casino in the Portomaso Marina area, to battle it out on the poker tables. At the end of the day, 64 players managed to find a bag to tag for Day 2 which will take place on Sunday, November 4.

Leading the pack is Ondrej Jakubcik from the Czech Republic with 462,000 in chips. Trailing behind him with quite a distance between them is Italy’s Alessandro Pichierri with 257,000. And closing the Day 1A chip lead podium is Borge Dypvik from Norway who bagged 241,500.

Jakubcik is no stranger to the Maltese poker scene as he already managed to win a tournament here a few months ago and took €100,000 home with him for his efforts. Other notable players who made it through to Day 2 include Irish player Daragh Davey who has made Malta his home base and found 180,000 chips at the end of the day. Local player Clint Sammut (139,000) needed two bullets today but survived in the long run.

Eyal Bensimhon (122,000) bagged a just above average stack but the well-liked poker player will be looking to build up that stack on Day 2. Fabian Gumz registered just after the dinner break and ran his starting stack of 25,000 up to 102,000.

Unfortunately, not everyone was that lucky. Jesper Hougaard ran his pocket eights into the ace-king of Natalia Chuprinskaia early on in the day, David Lappin couldn’t manage to hold on to his stack after having doubled before the first break of the day with ten-eight against Shayne Farquhar who held pocket jacks. Farhuqar had flopped a set but Lappin rivered a straight and then shoved and got called. Espen Uhlen Jorstad ran his ace-queen into the pocket kings of Michal Wilczynski. Steven Iglesias lost all his chips in the last hand of the night but will definitely be back tomorrow for Day 1B.

The second starting flight starts at 2 PM local time on Friday, November 2, with the exact same structure as the first flight. Another spectacular opening ceremony is planned and the PokerNews live reporting team will be there to bring you all the action from Malta!
