Diego Sarmiento Bags Huge Chip Lead After Marrakech Poker Open Main Event Day 1a

After a long wait, the Marrakech Poker Open returned to the Es Saadi Resort in Marrakech in grand fashion with 143 players entering on Day 1a of the Main Event.

After 11 levels of play here at the Casino de Marrakech, just 29 players advanced and there was a clear chip leader. Diego Sarmiento has established itself the counts with a hefty 538,500, more than double from the second in chips Bachir Moutki with 254,000.

Other big stacks and notable players advancing include WSOP Champion Jean-Luc Adam (225,000), Steve Savio (218,000), who took his seat at the end of the late registration and Daniel Rodriguez Carballal (217,000).

Anas Tadini, Isabel Baltazar, Sonny Franco and Jerome Zerbib were part of several regulars here in Marrakech who played on Day 1a, and while they were unfortunate to bust, reality TV star Moundir Zoughari (188,500), esport champion Kamel El Morabet (143,500), Luigi Macaluso (133,500) and Australian Hanna Azimai (35,000) all bagged up stacks for Day 2.

On the other side of the poker room, the High Roller is heading to another day with five players remaining in contention for the trophy and DH 700,000 (€70,000), including pro players Gaelle Baumann and Paul Tedeschi.

According to the table, a first player opened to 4,500 and Kamel El Morabet three-bet to 12,000. Moundir Zoughari decied to shove for a stack around 72,000 with {q-}{q-} in his hands and it folded back to El Morabet. The latter went deep into the tank before eventually calling after the clock has been called.

El Morabet revealed {a-}{k-} for a flip situation, but didn't hit throughout a board {7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{10-}, giving the winning hand and the double up to Zoughari.

In a three-way pot, the flop was {3-Spades}{k-Hearts}{q-Clubs} when it was checked to Jean-Luc Adam who bet 4,200 and only Raul Martinez made the call.

Both checked on the {j-Clubs} turn and {7-Hearts} fell on the river. Martinez led out for 6,500 and faced a raise worth 23,400 from Adam. Martinez quickly made the call but only to muck his cards when Adam revealed {10-Diamonds}{9-Spades} for a straight.

Zoughari Takes a Seat and a Pot

The actin folded to Moundir Zoughari on the button who opened for 700 and faced a three-bet worth 3,200 from Ignacio Molina Perez in the small blind. It came back to Zoughari who tanked and eventually called.

The flop revealed {3-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{6-Spades} and Perez continued for 2,800. Zoughari thought about his move for a minute and decided to raise it to 8,500. Perez didn't take long to fold and the star of the French survivor-style reality TV show Koh Lanta grabbed the pot.

The Marrakech Poker Open Main Event Gets Underway at 4 PM

Welcome to the luxurious Casino de Marrakech for the long-awaited return of the Marrakech Poker Open after five years of absence. For its last edition in 2017, this event garnered 184 entrants, with 23 of them making the money. The winner, after a three-way deal, was Spain's Moises Parilla-Ramos who took home €23,678 for his efforts.

It’s the first time Casino de Marrakech is hosting a huge poker festival since the pandemic, and the joy of finally returning to play in the colorful Moroccan city is widely palpable in the corridors of the Es Saadi Palace. The festival got underway earlier this week, and has already seen large numbers for its Opener and Warm-Up Deepstack events, as well as the High Roller. In fact, the High Roller is still ongoing, with 54 players remaining out of the 140 entries and Gaëlle Baumann is sitting second in the chip counts behind Hafid Kinany Alaoui.

The MPO Main Event, with a buy-in of DH 13,200 (€1,300), features two Day 1s taking place on September 8th and 9th at respectively 4 p.m. and 1 p.m. local time. Reentries are permitted during each flight up to the end of the tenth level, which also signals the end of late registration.

The schedule included 23 tournaments with in a wide range of buy-ins, and the players may also get their shot at a trophy thanks to some interesting side events, such as a Monster Stack event, a short-handed tournament, a classic bounty, and a progressive bounty. The festival will conclude with a Turbo Deep Closing Event which comes with a buy-in of DH 2,000 ($200).

Tournament officials have announced that there will be twelve levels of 45 minutes today with a 15-minute break every three levels. Cards will be in the air at 4 p.m. local time and a dinner break is yet to be decided, meaning the remaining players can expect to end their day at approximatively 2 a.m. or 3 a.m.
