Big Name Players Out in Force in Master Classics of Poker Main Event

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
John Juanda was one of the players to enter the MCOP Main Event
John Juanda was one of the players to enter the MCOP Main Event

Day 1b of the Master Classics of Poker got underway this afternoon and the poker aficionados were out in force. Not just the local Dutch community signed up, a small legion of internationally renowned poker stars entered as well. In the end, 86 players survived the day of 168 that entered.

The second starting day had another 9 levels in store for the players. When the first shuffle up and deal wat heard, 100 players had chips in front of them. That number gradually climbed throughout the day, eventually halting at 168. Amongst them, big stars like John Juanda, Ben Heath, Ivan Luca, and Byron Kaverman.

John Juanda never got anything going for himself, and failed to make Day 2 on his first bullet. Fortunately for the number 7 of poker's all-time money list, he's allowed to reenter before the start of Day 2.

The Dutch were out in force as well, trying to get themselves in the best position to become the next MCOP champion on home soil. Hakim Zoufri, who won the event last year, failed to make Day 2 on his first 2 bullets. He first busted with a pair and open-ended in a 3-bet pot to Jasper Wetemans. His 2nd try ended with sevens against tens.

Noah Boeken, another former champion, wasn't too lucky on Day 1b either. He got rivered after he got it in well ahead on the turn to bust his first bullet. His second bullet, he ran second pair into top-pair and never caught up. With only a single reentry allowed per starting day, Boeken only has a single option to reenter left.

Leading the pack of 86 survivors of Day 1b is Igor Yaroshevsky. The Ukrainian player changed his 30,000 starting stack into 146,700. Close on his heels is Krasimir Yankov with 141,300. The best Dutch player sits in 3rd, Joris Ruys collected 125,200. The shortest player coming back for Day 2 is Fatima Moreira de Melo, she bagged just 2 chips: 10,000.

Action resumes on Day 2 with blinds at 500 and 1,000. PokerNews.com will again be present to cover all the important hands and bring you all the updates one can ask for.

Lavrijsen Busts Refos

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Raoul Refos
Raoul Refos

Dennis Lavrijsen, who's bust out with kings against aces we reported on not too long ago, bought back in. He's off to a better start now than on his first bullet.

From early position, Ivan Luca opened to 2,000. Dennis Lavrijsen 3-bet the hijack to 6,000 and on the button, Raoul Refos 4-bet shoved for 11,200. The blinds and Luca folded, Lavrijsen called.

Dennis Lavrijsen: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Raoul Refos: {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}

The flop of {2-Clubs}{2-Spades}{7-Spades} gave Refos a flush draw but those outs were counterfeited with the {2-Hearts} on the turn. Lavrijsen just needed to dodge the aces, queens, and the case deuce. He did just that with the {K-Spades} on the river. Refos flush wasn't beating Lavrijsen's full house and the former said his goodbyes before departing.

Nevanlinna Loses Flip

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Jussi Nevanlinna won the 2015 MCOP
Jussi Nevanlinna won the 2015 MCOP

Jussi Nevanlinna has a pretty good track record here at the Master Classics of Poker in Amsterdam, having finished in the money 4 times. Three of those times, he made the final table. Once, 2 years ago, he won the event.

There's a long way to go for Nevanlinna to do that again. He's not off to a great start as he's relatively short with 17,000 in chips. He just lost {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} preflop all in against {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}. He flopped a set on {J-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{6-Hearts} but his opponent made a flush on the {K-Hearts} turn. The {3-Clubs} on the river didn't pair the board and Nevanlinna parted ways with a sizable chunk of chips.

Noah Boeken Hits the Rail

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Noah Boeken
Noah Boeken

We caught the tail end of a hand involving former MCOP champion Noah Boeken. Again, Rens Feenstra and Pim Kuipers offered some more details of what the lead up to that point.

A player opened in early position and the small blind and Noah Boeken in the big blind both called. The blinds checked to the initial raiser on {Q-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{5-Spades} and a continuation bet followed. The small blind gave up but Boeken shoved for about 13,000. The initial raiser called.

Noah Boeken: {7-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Initial raiser: {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}

The {6-Diamonds} on the turn and {K-Clubs} on the river were of no help to Boeken and he exited. Boeken busted out earlier today already, so he won't be able to enter Day 1b again. If he so wants, he can enter Day 1c which started 15 minutes ago and plays in a turbo format. Or, if he's not into playing turbo, he can still reenter tomorrow before the start of Day 2.

Kuipers Busts Yachou

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Farid Yachou
Farid Yachou

Farid Yachou's seat was empty, so we asked his former neighbor Rens Feenstra what had happened. Feenstra pointed us to Pim Kuipers since he was the one responsible.

Kuipers told us that the player under the gun opened for 1,100 and Kuipers made it 3,200 from middle position. In the hijack, Yachou cold 4-bet to 8,700. The original raiser folded and Kuipers shoved all in. Yachou called all in for 28,000 and the cards went on their backs.

Pim Kuipers: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}
Farid Yachou: {A-}{Q-}

The flop came king-high with a spade and spades on the turn and river even improved Kuipers to a flush. WPT Amsterdam and WPT Tournament of champions winner Yachou ousted, Kuipers up to almost 70,000.

Boyaciyan Forces Tounnouti to Make a Huge Fold

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
David Boyaciyan
David Boyaciyan

[Removed:17] opened the action with a raise and David Boyaciyan (cutoff) and Mourad Tounnouti (small blind) both called.

The flop came {5-Spades}{4-Spades}{10-Spades} and Tounnouti and Yan checked. Boyaciyan bet two-thirds of the pot and just Tounnouti called, Yan folded.

Both players checked the {4-Clubs} on the turn and the {A-Diamonds} completed the board. Tounnouti bet out 6,000 and Boyaciyan raised to 15,000.

Tounnouti went deep into the tank and eventually open folded his {A-Spades}{8-Spades} for the flopped flush. Boyaciyan quietly mucked. The former MCOP champion (and one-time runner-up) and 2-time EPT Prague finalist, now sits on 40,000 in chips.

Ruys Loses Set Over Set

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Joris Ruys
Joris Ruys

The player under the gun opened for 1,000 and Joris Ruys, seated in middle position, 3-bet to 3,100. Ruys' neighbor cold 4-bet to 7,200 with 19,600 behind and Ruys was the only caller.

Ruys checked on {10-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{K-Spades} and his opponent shoved all in. Ruys instantly called but soon found out he was in need of some help.

Joris Ruys: {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Opponent: {J-Clubs}{J-Spades}

The {4-Clubs} on the turn wasn't the card Ruys was looking for and neither was the {A-Spades} on the river.

Still, Ruys has 90,000 in front of him, 3 times what he started the day with.

Walthaus Eliminates Peters

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Jorn Walthaus
Jorn Walthaus

From middle position, Tobias Peters opened for 800. He picked up 2 callers: his neighbor Jorn Walthaus (also middle position) and the player in the small blind.

The flop came {4-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{3-Clubs} and the small blind lead out for 1,500. Peters called in position but Walthaus behind him squeezed to 5,500. The small blind called and action was back on Peters. Peters shoved for a little over 26,000 and Walthaus went all in over the top. The small blind folded.

Tobias Peters: {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}
Jorn Walthaus: {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}

The {8-Clubs} on the turn and {2-Diamonds} on the river were blanks and Peters exited the tournament area after shaking hands with Walthaus.

Kaverman Wins Without Showdown

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Byron Kaverman
Byron Kaverman

Byron Kaverman opened the cutoff for 450 and the player in the big blind called. Both of the active players checked on {2-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and the {J-Hearts} hit the turn. The big blind lead for 525 and Kaverman called.

As the {Q-Diamonds} completed the board, the big blind rapidly bet 1,250. Kaverman contemplated what to do for a minute or so before he slid 1,250 forward to call.

The big blind mucked and Kaverman followed his example. No showdown, but the pot went to Kaverman.

Day 1b Starts Today!

The Master Classics of Poker (MCOP) is one of the longest-running live poker tournament series still around. Last year, the festival doubled its schedule to include more than two dozen events to celebrate its 25th anniversary. This year's schedule is equally as big for its 26th edition, taking place at the Holland Casino Amsterdam.

The highlight of the poker festival is, of course, the MCOP €4,300 Main Event. Last year, Dutch player Hakim Zoufri won the event for €275,608 outlasting a field of 356 entrants.

That marked the fourth time this decade the trophy was kept on home soil as David Boyaciyan (2011 - €382,200), Noah Boeken (2013 - €306,821) and Ruben Visser (2014 - €306,821) also notched recent victories in the Main Event.

Main Event

This year's Main Event should prove to be equally exciting. The tournament is a deep-stacked affair with players starting out with 30,000 in chips. Blind levels increase every 60 minutes during the opening flight today and every 20 minutes during a turbo-flight later tonight. Players are allowed to re-enter once per flight, and once more before the start-of-play on Day 2.

Players bagging chips will combine for Day 2 tomorrow and the tournament will play through Nov. 24 until a winner is crowned. Starting on Day 3, blinds go up to 75 minutes, providing players a deeper structure.
