Vladislav Fedoseev Leads at End of Day 1a of the PokerNews Cup

Level 15 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Vladislav Fedoseev
Vladislav Fedoseev

Vladislav Fedoseev ended Day 1a of the $500 PokerNews Cup as the chip leader as 16 players survived from the field of 108 entrants at the 2022 Luxon Pay Mediterranean Poker Party at the Merit Royal Hotel & Casino in North Cyprus. All surviving players have locked up a minimum cash and will return for Day 2 on Wednesday.

The Russian ended the day with 365,000 after over twelve hours of action. The other two big stacks were direct to the right of Fedoseev as him along with Ismail Kalkan (326,000) and Veselin Petrov (321,000) hoarded the chips. Also ending the day in the top five chip stacks was Viktor Utrobin (271,000) who enjoyed a late surge in the day as he went from small stack to big stack quickly after he scored a double knockout with pocket aces.

Other notables who bagged included Konstantinos Nanos (262,000), Gabriel Akiki (215,000) and Bassel Moussa (120,000).

Gabriel Akiki was one of the big stacks throughout much of the day when his aces dominated Ismail Kalkan's ace-king in an 80 big blind pot which moved Akiki into the chip lead. However the tides turned and ultimately Kalkan ended the day with more chips.

Dimitrios Farmakoulis was the bubble boy as he lost a flip as his ace-nine couldn’t beat Ismail Kalkan’s pocket fives.

Those who didn’t make it to Day 2 will have more chances tomorrow where two more flights will be taking place. At 12 p.m. local time Day 1b will commence which will be a repeat of flight 1a with levels lasting 40-minutes in length. For those who would prefer a faster pacing Day 1c is a turbo flight with 20-minute levels which commences from 8 p.m. local time. Both flights start with 30,000 chips and blinds at 100/100.

Stay tuned to PokerNews for all four days of action as the latest PokerNews Cup champion will be crowned on Thursday 1st September.

Furkan Beg
Furkan Beg

Vesilin Petrov raised to 8,000 on the button before Furkan Beg moved all in from the big blind for 39,000. Petrov made the call.

Furkan Beg: {k-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}
Vesilin Petrov: {a-Hearts}{5-Hearts}

Beg needed to hit. But Petrov was in front on the {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} flop. The turn came the {j-Diamonds} which gave Beg extra outs. The river came the {7-Clubs} which gave Beg a straight to earn a much needed double up.

Kalkan Denied Massive Chip Up with Unlikely River Chop

Level 13 : Blinds 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Ismail Kalkan
Ismail Kalkan

Dimitrios Farmakoulis opened for 7,000 from the hijack and Ismail Kalkan called from the cutoff as well as the small blind and Furkan Beg in the big blind.

The flop came {6-Spades}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs} and action checked around. The turn was the {5-Spades} and it was certainly an action card. Players checked to Kalkan in the cutoff who put in a pot-sized bet of 31,000. While the small blind called, Beg called and Farmakoulis deliberated for nearly a minute before going all in for 82,000. Kalkan snap-called while beg sat there in agony, wondering what to do. The floor was eventually called and Beg folded {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs} face up.

Dimitrios Farmakoulis: {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}
Ismail Kalkan: {k-Hearts}{4-Hearts}

Kalkan was in prime position to eliminate Farmakoulis and take down a massive pot but the Greek would be spared as the {4-Diamonds} arrived on the river, resulting in a chopped pot.

Akiki Doubles With Aces

Level 12 : Blinds 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Gabriel Akiki
Gabriel Akiki

Ismail Kalkan raised to 7,500 from the hijack and was called by the small blind before Gabriel Akiki moved all in for 106,000 from the big blind.

Akiki called the clocked on Kalkan who was given thirty seconds to make his decision. With a few seconds left Kalkan flipped a chip before slamming it into the middle of the table. The small blind thought for a moment before folding.

Gabriel Akiki: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}
Ismail Kalkan: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

Akiki had aces and was in great shape against Kalkan's ace-king. The flop came {10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} which gave little hope for Kalkan who was drawing dead on the {9-Clubs} turn. The river came the {5-Hearts} which secured the double up for Akiki.

Ismail Kalkan
Ismail Kalkan

Gabriel Akiki raised from under the gun and Young Hwi Cho called in early position before Ismail Kalkan moved all in from the cutoff for 41,500. The big blind called for less and Akiki also called. Cho moved out the way.

Big Blind: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Ismail Kalkan: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Gabriel Akiki: {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}

Akiki shouted for an eight as he had both players covered however the flop put Kalkan on top as it came {a-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{3-Spades}. There was no drama as the turn came the {9-Diamonds} and the river the {2-Clubs} to eliminate the big blind and give Kalkan a double up plus change.

His under-the-gun opponent went into the tank for nearly two minutes before making the call with {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}.

Kalkan Eliminates Afsharorumieh

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Afshin Afsharorumieh
Afshin Afsharorumieh

Action was caught with around 47,500 in the middle with the board reading {q-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}.

Afshin Afsharorumieh, in the small blind, had shoved his final 18,700 chips and Ismail Kalkan went deep into the tank for over two minutes, asking Afsharorumieh questions nearly the entire time.

"Did you have ace-king and get lucky? I have a queen. Did you get there?"

Eventually, Kalkan agonizingly made the call. Afsharorumieh produced {j-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for third pair and a missed flush draw.

"Oh my god, he nearly bluffed me!" Kalkan exclaimed as he turned over {q-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for the win, eliminating Afsharorumieh, who was one of the flight's bigger stacks most of the day.

Cho Quadruples Up in Four-Way All In

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Young Hwi Cho
Young Hwi Cho

Ozkan Cakir opened the action from early position for 4,000 and was called by a middle position player and the hijack. Young Hwi Cho, on the button, went all in for 24,000 total.

Cakir then made the call and then the middle-position player shoved for 30,000. The hijack, who had 36,500 behind, then went into the tank for nearly two minutes before going all in himself. Cakir called and there was a small crowd gathered around the table for the four-way showdown.

Young Hwi Cho: {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Middle Position: {5-Spades}{5-Hearts}
Hijack: {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}
Ozkan Cahir: {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}

Cahir had the biggest of the three pocket pairs and was surprised and excited to see that he was ahead, though Cho had overcards to the rest of them.

With each of the players yelling for their hand to become good, the flop came {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{k-Clubs} putting Cho way out in front.

The turn brought the {q-Diamonds}, giving Cho two pair and giving four cards to an unlikely four-way chop.

The river was the {8-Spades}, giving Cho the quadruple up while Cakir earned the side pot to cut his losses to just 18,500 on the hand.

Samaha Makes Correct Hero Call with Pair of Sevens

Level 7 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Bernard Samaha
Bernard Samaha

There was roughly 45,000 in the middle on a {k-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} board and Afshin Afsharorumieh, from the hijack, put out a bet of 16,000 and placed his chips directly in front of Bernard Samaha, who sat directly to his left.

Samaha was not amused, replying: "I don't believe you have the king." After about 20 seconds, Samaha begrudgingly tossed in a call.

Afsharorumieh could only produce {10-Spades}{8-Clubs} for a missed straight draw while Samaha turned over {7-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} for third pair and took down the huge pot.

Bernard Samaha

Angelo Patane raised from under the gun to 1,800. Afshin Afsharorumieh called in the cutoff before Bernard Samaha three bet to 8,200. Only Patane called.

The flop came {q-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} and Samaha bet 12,000 when checked to. Patane moved all in covering Samaha and Samaha quickly called.

Bernard Samaha: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}
Angelo Patane: {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}

Samaha was ahead with an overpair while Patane had a flush draw. The turn was a brick as it came the {q-Spades}. The {q-Diamonds} gave Patane the king high flush however it was no good as Samaha had the full house for the double up.
