Dmitry Kataev Claims Chip Lead on Day 2 of $5,300 Main Event

Level 18 : Blinds 50,000/100,000, 100,000 ante
Dmitry Kataev

Day 2 of the $5,300 Main Event at the 2025 Mediterranean Poker Party concluded with 96 players managing to bag up a stack for Day 3. The 1,196-strong field that turned up to play at the Merit Diamond Hotel Casino & Spa generated a total prize pool of $5,740,800, with the eventual champion taking home a staggering $1,000,000.

After six 50-minute levels of poker, Dmitry Kataev emerged at the top of the counts with a monstrous stack of 15,635,000. Kataev's closest rival is the start of Day 2 chip leader, Aren Bezhanyan with 10,665,000. Both Kataev and Bezhanyan finished at the top of their respective flights and began the day with the two largest stacks. However, a late surge from Kataev allowed him to overtake Bezhanyan, positioning him as the one to catch heading into the penultimate day of the Main Event.

Also making it through to Day 3 is the United Kingdom’s Sam Trickett, who bagged 6,440,000. With over $21 million in career earnings and a $10 million score to his name, Trickett has been mostly absent from the tournament scene recently, having not recorded a live cash in more than five years. Today, he was at risk on the bubble holding pocket kings against Viktor Mukhin’s ace-rag, but a king-high flop secured the double and helped start to push Trickett's stack in the right direction.

The primary goal for most players returning on Day 2 was to outlast the money bubble and secure a spot among the final 175, locking up a cash of at least $8,500. Unfortunately for Arsen Grigoryan, he claimed the unwanted title of bubble boy. Forced all-in from the big blind in a three-way pot, Grigoryan tabled pocket jacks. However, Patrick Kallas had rivered two pair with ace-eight, sending Grigoryan to the rail as the last player to leave empty-handed.

A few more notables returning to the baize tomorrow include Damir Gabdullin (8,780,000), bracelet winner Alexandros Kolonias (7,880,000), and the defending champion Azamat Lamkov (1,360,000). Joining them will be Ehsan Amiri, Aliaksandr Hirs, Kirill Shcherbakov, and the Mystery Bounty winner Alex Goulder.

The remaining players will return to continue playing at noon local time tomorrow, with the blinds levels being increased to 60 minutes in length. Blinds will start at 60,000/120,000 with a big blind ante of 120,000, and the plan for tomorrow will be announced shortly after cards get in the air.

Safari's Bullets Leave Ju With Crumbs

Level 18 : Blinds 50,000/100,000, 100,000 ante
Samuel Ju
Samuel Ju

Samuel Ju and Seyed Safari just got involved in a 3,500,000 pot after the two got all of their chips in preflop.

Seyed Safari: AA All in
Samuel Ju: 1010

Ju would only be left with 35,000 if he couldn't crack Safari's aces. The board ran out clean for Safari as it came 6K3K5, meaning he doubled up, while Ju was left with less than a small blind.

Khamatgareev Gets Lucky Against Runcan

Level 17 : 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Rustam Khamatgareev
Rustam Khamatgareev

Rustam Khamatgareev opened middle position and Paul Runcan three-bet out of the big blind. Khamatgareev the four-bet shoved for around 3,200,000, and Runcan quickly called.

Rustam Khamatgareev: AJ All in
Paul Runcan: AK

Runcan was a clean runout away from a very healthy stack and did retain the lead on the 9Q4 flop, but Khamatgareev picked up a flush draw to make things a little sweaty.

A 5 on the turn was a brick, but Runcan couldn't fade the river as the 8 gave Khamatgareev the nut flush, and left Runcan with around 700,000.

Moments later, Runcan was seen exiting the tournament room and had been eliminated.

Toma Busts Leroux; Frankowski Doubles Through Pazma

Level 17 : 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Maciej Toma
Maciej Toma

Back-to-back all-ins on the same table left one player out and one with a double-up.

First, Marius Leroux had his last few big blinds in the pot and was put at risk by Maciej Toma.

Marius Leroux: K9 All in
Maciej Toma: JJ

The runout of 35346 wasn't helpful to Leroux, and he was eliminated.

In the very next hand, Wojciech Frankowski shoved from the small blind for 720,000 and Lukas Pazma looked him up from the big blind.

Wojciech Frankowski: KQ All in
Lukas Pazma: AJ

Pazma was in the lead and stayed there through the 2410 flop, but Frankowski found a pair on the K turn to take the lead. Pazma did pick up a gutshot straight draw to Broadway, but the 10 river wasn't what he needed, and Frankowski doubled up.

Chauskin Sends Kobzev to the Rail

Level 17 : 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Natan Chauskin
Natan Chauskin

With Viktor Kobzev all-in from the small blind, the big blind checked a flop of 5KA over to Natan Chauskin on the button. Chauskin bet, and the big blind folded. Kobzev and Chauskin turned their cards over with Kobzev all-in.

Viktor Kobzev: K4 All in
Natan Chauskin: A8

Kobzev was behind with second pair to the top pair of Chauskin. However, the K turn gave Kobzev trips and meant only a two-outer ace on the river would end his Main Event run. The river was the A to give Chauskin a boat, sending Kobzev to the rail.

Grigoryan Bubbles the Main Event

Level 16 : Blinds 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Main Event Bubble
Main Event Bubble

On the direct bubble of the Main Event, Arsen Grigoryan was forced all-in from the big blind for his last 25,000 before Denis Karakashi limped from the hijack. Patrick Kallas just called from the small blind and they went to the flop three-ways with Grigoryan all-in.

Kallas and Karakashi checked a runout of Q1087A all the way down to the river. After the floor staff and cameras arrived, the cards were turned over.

Arsen Grigoryan: JJ All in
Denis Karakashi: 42
Patrick Kallas: A8

Karakashi was playing the board, while Grigoryan had found pocket jacks in the big blind. However, he lost the pot to Kallas' rivered two pair with aces and eights.

Unfortunately for Grigoryan, this meant he was the bubble boy of the 2025 Mediterranean Poker Party Main Event, with the remaining 175 players all now in the money.

Trickett's Kings Reign Over Mukhin

Level 16 : Blinds 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Sam Trickett
Sam Trickett

Sam Trickett opened the hijack and Viktor Mukhin three-bet shoved a stack of around 3,200,000. When it got back to Trickett, he called off his stack of around 2,450,000.

Sam Trickett: KK All in
Viktor Mukhin: A6

Trickett had the lead and just needed to fade the ace of Mukhin, who was looking to thin down the field. A flop of K510 favored Trickett as he made top set, leaving Mukhin with just some backdoor draws.

Despite the turn being a club, the 10 wasn't what Mukhin was looking for as Trickett made a full house to lock up the pot. An 8 completed the board, and Trickett's stack soared to around 5,000,000.

Chen's Main Event Sails Away on the River

Level 16 : Blinds 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Yuhang Chen
Yuhang Chen

Yuhang Chen opened from under the gun and Damir Gabdullin three-bet the cutoff. Chen then put in a four-bet and Gabdullin five-bet ripped! Chen had around 1,500,000 to start the hand and quickly called.

Yuhang Chen: AA All in
Damir Gabdullin: A4

Chen had the goods and Gabdullin had run right into the aces, but there were still five cards to come where anything could happen. The flop came 4J9, giving Gabdullin a pair of fours, but it was Chen that still held a big advantage.

An 8 on the turn gave Chen an unnecessary flush draw as only a four on the river would end his Main Event. A four is what Gabdullin needed, and a four is what he got as the 4 rolled off on the river, giving Gabdullin trips!

Chen couldn't believe it, but Gabdullin was all smiles as his stack swelled to around 6,000,000.

$1,000,000 Up Top Once Again in Cyprus

Level 16 : Blinds 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Azamat Lamkov
Azamat Lamkov

While this year’s Main Event drew slightly fewer entries than last year, the payout at the top remains just as impressive. A total of 1,196 players entered the 2025 Mediterranean Poker Party Main Event, and once again, $1,000,000 is waiting for the eventual champion.

In 2024, Azamat Lamkov bested a 1,260-player field to earn the same amount, and now a new name will be etched into the winner’s list with an identical seven-figure score on the line.

The top 175 finishers will make the money, with a min-cash of $8,500 guaranteed. Despite a slight dip in attendance, the prize pool proves this Main Event remains one of the most lucrative in the region.
