Aliaksandr Hirs Triumphs In Event #13: $5,300 High Roller ($204,700)

Level 31 : Blinds 125,000/250,000, 250,000 ante
Aliaksandr Hirs
Aliaksandr Hirs

Event #13: $5,300 High Roller at the Merit Poker Carmen Series has drawn to a close after three days of play. Once the dust settled at the conclusion of the third and final day, it was none other than Belarusian Aliaksandr Hirs who emerged as the last one standing from an initial field of 187 to capture the lion's share of the $860,200 prizepool, defeating Fahredin Mustafov in a one sided heads-up affair.

This marks Hirs' first live tournament victory with the $204,700 first place prize adding a significant chunk to his career earnings of $396,757. It should be noted, however, that is is not his largest ever cash with that coming back in August 2022 at EPT Barcelona when he finished third in the $2,200 ESPT High Roller for $284,668.

Winner's Reaction

Although Hirs is relatively new to the live poker scene, he has been racking up a steady slate of impressive results online, a fact he reflected on after his victory.

"It's a similar game [online] but it's also a different atmosphere".

That different atmosphere is something Hirs points to as a reason why he is now playing more live events.

"It's interesting to play with different players because you can see these players. Online you can only see the icon. Now you can see the players, you can see their emotion. It's really good".

Bubble Play

A total of 28 players returned for the final day, which meant that none had yet made it into the money with 23 spots getting paid. With several short stacks in the field, bubble play did not last long. Ultimately, Alexandru Papazian, Romania's all time money leader, was the individual unfortunate enough to burst the bubble after he got his last few chips in with a dominated hand against Carlos Aoun and failed to improve. Everyone left was guaranteed a minimum of $8,100 but with such big money up top, nobody was going to be happy heading home just yet.

Final Table Action

The tournament average stack rarely strayed above the 35 big blind mark and was often significantly below that point. As a result, the final table was set not too long into the day after Sakis Adrianopoulos jammed his ace-four right into Anton Ionel's ace-jack.

With that, the remaining nine took their seats to grind out what would be a relatively long final table. Lev Kydatov was the short stack entering the final table and so it was little surprise that he was first out the door when his big slick failed to hold against the ace-jack of Simeon Spasov.

Next to head to the exits was the congenial Egor Romaniuk, flopping top-top only to see a rampant Hirs turn over ladies for the overpair. Not long after, Aoun hit the showers in 7th place, felled in a blind on blind encounter with Ionel.

It took some time for the next player to go but eventually Ionel, whose stack had been dwindling away for some time, lost a flip against Mustafov to send him to the rail in 6th place. Just a few hands later, Eduard Barsegian fell to the wayside, unable to overcome Hirs' tens.

Spasov displayed great skill throughout the day and was near or at the top of the leaderboard for a good portion of the final table. Unfortunately for him, after taking a few bad beats, he got his remaining chips in with jack-nine against the eigh-seven of Hirs, who paired up to scoop the pot. Start of day chipleader Ryan Mandara coasted for much of the day but could not do so all the way to the end, instead succumbing to a seemingly unstoppable Hirs after check-jamming his flush draw on the flop and failing to hit.

That elimination setup a heads-up showdown between Hirs and Mustafov. Hirs entered with a sizable chip advantage, one that he never relinquished. Though Mustafov put up a good fight, it was simply Hirs' day. After flopping top pair, Hirs bet-called a shove from Mustafov who had an open ended straight draw. The draw failed to come in and that was all she wrote.

That concludes coverage of Event #13: $5,300 High Roller at the Merit Poker Carmen Series, hosted by the Merit Crystal Cove Hotel and Casino. Be sure to stay tuned as the PokerNews live reporting team provides coverage through to the end of the series.

Fahredin Mustafov Eliminated in 2nd Place ($143,800)

Level 31 : Blinds 125,000/250,000, 250,000 ante
Fahredin Mustafov
Fahredin Mustafov

Fahredin Mustafov limped on the button holding {6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} and Aliaksandr Hirs checked his option out of the big blind with {10-Hearts}{9-Spades}.

Hirs led into Mustafov for 500,000 on a flop of {3-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}. That did not appear to sit well with Mustafov who was somewhat handcuffed by his short stack. Eventually he did push his remaining chips into the middle and Hirs snapped it off.

Fahredin Mustafov: {6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}
Aliaksandr Hirs: {10-Hearts}{9-Spades}

Hirs was two cards away from victory while Mustafov would need to get lucky to survive. The {j-Clubs} turn kept Hirs ahead and, with all eyes on the monitor above the table, the dealer burned and turned over the {8-Hearts} to confirm Mustafov's exit in 2nd place.

Stay tuned for a full tournament recap to follow.

Ryan Mandara Eliminated in 3rd Place ($92,700)

Level 30 : Blinds 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Ryan Mandara
Ryan Mandara

Aliaksandr Hirs opened to 400,000 on the button with {q-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and was called by Ryan Mandara in the big blind holding {j-Spades}{5-Spades}.

The {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Spades} flop connected with both players and saw Mandara check to Hirs who continued for 300,000. Mandara responded by check-raising all in for 3,475,000. Hirs asked for a count before making the call with the covering stack to put Mandara at risk.

Ryan Mandara: {j-Spades}{5-Spades}
Aliaksandr Hirs: {q-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

Hirs was ahead but Mandara was not a big dog, needing to find a spade or jack to survive. The {a-Diamonds} turn changed nothing with the {6-Hearts} river ending Mandara's impressive run in 3rd place.

Simeon Spasov Eliminated in 4th Place ($68,900)

Level 29 : Blinds 80,000/160,000, 160,000 ante
Simeon Spasov
Simeon Spasov

Simeon Spasov moved all in for 450,000 from the cutoff holding {j-Hearts}{9-Spades} and was looked up by Aliaksandr Hirs in the big blind with {8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}.

Simeon Spasov: {j-Hearts}{9-Spades}
Aliaksandr Hirs: {8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

Spasov was a marginal favourite to survive, that is until the flop came {k-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{7-Spades}, pairing up a seemingly unstoppable Hirs. The {6-Spades} turn left Spasov needing to hit one of his two overcards on the river to survive but the {7-Diamonds} rolled off the deck instead to oust him from the tournament in 4th place.

Eduard Barsegian Eliminated in 5th Place ($51,900)

Level 29 : Blinds 80,000/160,000, 160,000 ante
Eduard Barsegian
Eduard Barsegian

Eduard Barsegian moved his remaining 1,815,000 into the middle from middle position holding {a-Clubs}{3-Clubs} only for the rampant Aliaksandr Hirs to wake up with {10-Spades}{10-Hearts} in the cutoff. Hirs just called while the remaining players folded to put Barsegian at risk.

Eduard Barsegian: {a-Clubs}{3-Clubs}
Aliaksandr Hirs: {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}

Barsegian was not in great shape and little changed on the {j-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} flop. The {2-Clubs} turn did give him a flush draw to go along with his overcard but the river bricked out {5-Spades} to send him to the payout cage in 5th place. Hirs, meanwhile, continues to put distance between himself and the rest of the field.

Anton Ionel Eliminated in 6th Place ($41,750)

Level 29 : Blinds 80,000/160,000, 160,000 ante
Ionel Anton
Ionel Anton

Anton Ionel moved all in for 1,330,000 from under the gun with {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} before Fahredin Mustafov re-jammed in the cutoff holding {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}. The remaining players released their holdings and Ionel was officially at risk.

Anton Ionel: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}
Fahredin Mustafov: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}

It was race and one that Ionel would need to win to stay in the tournament. The {7-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{a-Spades} immediately propelled Mustafov into the lead with the {q-Diamonds} turn and {7-Clubs} river changing nothing to send Ionel packing in 6th place.

Carlos Aoun Eliminated in 7th Place ($34,800)

Level 26 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Carlos Aoun
Carlos Aoun

Action folded around to Carlos Aoun in the small blind and he moved all in for his last 390,000 holding {10-Spades}{7-Spades}. Anton Ionel looked down at {a-Clubs}{6-Spades} in the big blind and quickly called to put Aoun at risk.

Carlos Aoun: {10-Spades}{7-Spades}
Anton Ionel: {a-Clubs}{6-Spades}

Aoun, though behind, was not in awful shape, holding two live cards. The {5-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{q-Spades}{9-Hearts}{k-Spades} runout did not improve his hand, however, sending him to the rail in 7th place.

Egor Romaniuk Eliminated in 8th Place ($28,050)

Level 26 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Egor Romaniuk
Egor Romaniuk

Aliaksandr Hirs opened to 160,000 from under the gun with {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} and Egor Romaniuk called from middle position holding {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}. The remaining players got out of the way to send action heads-up to the flop.

Hirs continued for 155,000 following the {3-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{2-Spades} flop and Romaniuk, with top pair, made the call.

The {5-Diamonds} turn saw Hirs move all in and Romaniuk, with less than pot behind, called off for his tournament life.

Egor Romaniuk: {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Aliaksandr Hirs: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

Romaniuk was in bad shape with just one card to come and could not improve on the {6-Clubs} river, bringing his tournament to a close in 8th place.

Lev Kydatov Eliminated in 9th Place ($21,250)

Level 25 : Blinds 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Lev Kydatov
Lev Kydatov

Action folded to Lev Kydatov in middle position and he opened to 300,000 with {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}, leaving himself just 105,000 behind. Simeon Spasov then called with {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts} on the button with the blinds getting out of the way to send action heads-up to the flop.

The flop came {j-Spades}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and Kydatov moved the remainder of his stack into the middle. Spasov snapped it off to put Kydatov at risk.

Lev Kydatov: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Simeon Spasov: {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

Spasov had hit the dream flop to leave Kydatov drawing extremely thin. No help came for the at risk player on the {7-Spades} turn or {2-Diamonds} river to mark Kydatov as the first casualty of the final table.

Sakis Adrianopoulos Eliminated in 10th Place ($14,850)

Level 25 : Blinds 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Sakis Adrianopoulos
Sakis Adrianopoulos

Action folded around to Sakis Adrianopoulos on the button and he moved all in for 875,000. Anton Ionel thought for some time before making the call out of the small blind while Aliaksandr Hirs quickly vacated the big blind.

Sakis Adrianopoulos: {a-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}
Anton Ionel: {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

Adrianopoulos was dominated and at risk, not an enviable position to be in. The {j-Spades}{3-Hearts}{k-Clubs} flop all but ended things with the {7-Diamonds} turn closing the door on a Greek comeback prior to the {q-Spades} river. With the elimination of Adrianopoulos, the final table of nine has been set. The remaining players have been sent on a 60-minute break and will return partway through Level 25 with blinds at 30,000/60,000 with a 60,000 big blind ante.
