Downer Unafraid of Sharks

Level 3 : 200/300, 300 ante

Colin Downer, who played yesterday's Day 1a, is back in action in the early levels of a fresh flight, undaunted by playing out of position with a shark-themed Chris Moneymaker. They recently saw a flop of {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}{3-Spades}, Downer swiftly check-raising Moneymaker's 3,000 bet to 11,000.

"Pocket threes?" mused Moneymaker, before throwing his hand away.

Good River for Day Equals Bad River for Moneymaker

Level 3 : 200/300, 300 ante

A hand that started cagily four-way ended up denting Chris Moneymaker's stack. Glenn Day made the first optional action with a limp in the cutoff for 300. Button Jeff Kimber raised to 1,000, picking up both blinds (Filippo Scialo and Moneymaker) and Day for the flop: {9-Spades}{4-Spades}{8-Hearts}. Four checks later, a turn: {j-Spades}. Again, no one exercised their right to put any more chips into the pot.

The river, however, saw action. When the {6-Clubs} came down, Scialo led out for 1,000 and Moneymaker raised to 6,500. Day immediately threw in the call while Scialo passed. Moneymaker called his opponent's hand: "Guess you got a straight. So do I..." but the bad news was that it was the nut version.

Moneymaker: {5-}{7-}
Day: {10-}{q-}

"Good river!" announced Day, raking in the pot.

"Very bad river," countered Moneymaker.

Herbertson's Chance to Triple Evaporates on the Turn

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante

Paul Herbertson has been eliminated after moving all-in on a three-way flop of {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{6-Clubs} for 4,900 (around pot), called by both opponents. The action accompanying the {j-Hearts} turn could not have given him much confidence: the player first to act bet out 5,000 and was raised to 10,000 by Dawn Burnip. After the first player folded, Herbertson tabled {k-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and announced with calm understatement, "That'll do," when he saw the {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} in her hand. He was drawing dead, tapped the table and made his exit.

Kimber Busts Last Hand Before Break

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante

A huge pot at the end of Level 4 has handed Hamza Nasir the chip lead and eliminated Jeff Kimber in the process. A three-bet preflop pot (from 1,900 to 5,600) saw three players see a {7-Spades}{j-Clubs}{j-Spades} flop with over half a starting stack in the middle already. The third player checked, Nasir led out 10,000 and Kimber called.

The turn: {8-Hearts}. Nasir fired another 20,000 and Kimber called once more.

The river: {k-Diamonds}. Nasir moved all in for 19,500 and after a bit of a think, Kimber called all-in for slightly less.

Nasir showed down {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} and though Kimber mucked it was not before the {9-Hearts}{9-Spades} flashed. He now has 15 minutes to regroup, re-enter and rejoin battle at the felt.

Collins Has Outs, Until He Doesn't

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante

Gary Collins has bust out after a three-way pot (a single raise pre) escalated on a flop of {8-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}. Big blind Gordon McArthur checked, and early position Colin Downer fired 4,200. Over to Collins, who moved all in for 17,600. Action back on McArthur, he moved all-in for over 50,000, setting Downer what turned out to be a tough question - the clock was almost called. Downer folded and McArthur announced, "The nuts."

Downer: {10-Spades}{9-Spades} for the flopped straight.
Collins: {q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. "I have outs," he said, as the {3-Hearts} turn came down. The river was the {3-Spades}. "I have no outs," he said as he made his exit.
