Odds and Ends, Level 6 Edition

We can't find J.J. Liu or David Benyamine. It seems both are early casualties.

As previously noted, Phil Hellmuth has arrived. With a 30,000-chip starting stack, he's not really much worse off for having missed the first five levels.

Dennis Phillips seems to be resting his eyes in between hands at one of the outer tables.

Andrew Brown's stack, which had climbed as high as 90,000, is all the way back down to 40,000. He check-raised the turn on a {7-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} {K-Spades} {9-Spades} board, then bet 15,000 on the {4-Clubs} river. His {4-Spades} {6-Spades} missed a spade flush but made bottom two pair; it was no good against {9-Diamonds} {6-Diamonds}.

"The way you were doing all that talking," said Brown's opponent, "I didn't think you were bluffing."

"Your read was right," Brown replied. But that was little consolation for his diminished stack.

Schelger Lets One Go

Shane Schleger
Shane Schleger
A player in early position opened to 1,200, and in the cutoff, Shane Schleger made it 3,600 to go. Action folded back to the original raiser, who asked Schleger how much he had behind. About 22k. The guy threw out three brown 10,000 chips.

"I have no idea what those are," said Schleger. He took a long moment to consider putting his tournament life at risk, finally folding {J-Diamonds} {J-Spades} face up.

"Nice laydown," said his opponent.

"Never laid that hand down in my life! In my life!" joked Schleger.

The Daniel and Phil Show

Phil Hellmuth has finally arrived and like a homing beacon has attracted all of the tv cameras in the building. Daniel Negreanu is only a few tables away and keeps running over between hands to discuss terms of a prop bet.

Negreanu started out offering Hellmuth 8:1 against Hellmuth winning a bracelet in a non-hold'em even at this year's WSOP. Phil countered with 10:1 and Negreanu accepted. Now they're arguing over how much to wager.

Sitting quietly at Hellmuth's table, Kathy Liebert piped up, "What odds to I get?" "You?" laughed Negreanu. "35:1." Negreaunu's way too smart to bet against Kathy.

Smith Gets Boosted

Justin "BoostedJ" Smith
Justin "BoostedJ" Smith
Matt Graham raised from early position to 1,025 before a player in middle position reraised to 3,200. A young woman behind the reraising called and then action folded to Justin "BoostedJ" Smith in the big blind. Smith took his time and then put in a four-bet to 10,600. Graham then folded, but the next player that made it 3,200 called. The young woman was next up and she moved a tall stack of chips into the middle and was all in. Smith called off his stack and the player in between them folded.

Smith tabled two kings -- {K-Hearts}{K-Spades} -- and was ahead of his opponent's pocket jacks -- {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}.

The board ran out {Q-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and Smith made a full house to win the big pot. He was all in for just under 22,000 and now has nearly 60,000 total.

Cold Deck Marks the End of Khan

Danny Wong
Danny Wong
Some times the way the cards come out, there's no way to avoid going broke. That's what happened to Hevad Khan when he took on Danny Wong on one of tables in the salon. Wong started things off with a middle-position pre-flop raise to 750. Khan, two seats to Wong's left, re-raised to 2,100, clearing out the rest of the field. Wong called.

A flop of {A-Diamonds} {k-Clubs} {7-Hearts} would be Khan's downfall. Wong checked, then check-raised Khan's 3,500-chip bet to 8,000. Khan called.

Both players checked the {8-Diamonds} turn. When the river fell {Q-Hearts}, Wong splashed 30,000 chips into the pot, enough to set Khan all in. Khan didn't take long to call, but his top two pair, {A-Spades} {k-Hearts}, had been brutally out-flopped by Wong's set of sevens, {7-Diamonds} {7-Spades}. Wong collected the pot and Khan's scalp. Khan is now out.

Wong has climbed to about 89,000 in chips.

Brown Misses and Bluff Fails

Just moments after having a ton of chips handed to him from a player bluffing, Andrew Brown was involved in another pot. This time it was Brown doing the bluffing and losing the chips.

Brown raised preflop to 8000 from middle position and the small blind three-bet to 2,150. Brown made the call, claiming, "I'm going to suck out."

The flop came down {6-Clubs}{3-Spades}{2-Clubs} and the small blind fired 4,000. Brown made the call.

The turn card was the {J-Spades} and Brown fired 8,400 after his opponent checked to him. The small blind made the call.

The river completed the board with the {K-Diamonds} and the small blind checked. Brown bet 13,700 which was enough to put his opponent all in. The player made the call quickly with the {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts} and Brown mucked his hand.

"I missed," said Brown.

Phillips Fluctuating

Carter Phillips raised from early position to 775 and the hijack seat called. The flop came down {8-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Phillips fired a continuation bet of 1,025. His opponent raised to 3,000 and got Phillips off the hand.

Despite the small loss, Phillips is still on roughly 80,000 chips and one of the bigger stacks in the room. He's been fluctuating up and down between 75,000 and 100,000 in the past level.
