Cheadle Slays the Dragon

Don Cheadle
Don Cheadle
A short-stacked David Pham got it all in before the flop holding {7-Spades} {4-Spades} and was looked up by Don Cheadle who tabled a pocket pair of jacks. The board ran out {6-Hearts} {Q-Spades} {3-Diamonds} {6-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} and Cheadle claimed the pot and the match with two pair, queens and jacks.

The win sends Cheadle into the Round of 32 where he'll face 2007 NBC Heads-Up Champ Paul Wasicka.

No Joy

Nicholas Joy
Nicholas Joy
Paul Wasicka might have felt confident when he check-raised Nicholas Joy all in on a flop of {Q-Diamonds} {2-Hearts} {9-Clubs}. Wasicka, who had the chip lead, turned over top pair with {Q-?} {J-Hearts} but he was drawing slim at a jack against Joy's {Q-?} {9-?}. Wasicka did hit a jack on the turn, to Joy's utter disbelief. Joy was not able to return the favor with a nine on the river. He has therefore been eliminated from the tournament and Wasicka is on to the next round.

"I wouldn't let my fans down, baby!"

Hevad Khan
Hevad Khan
...said Scotty Nguyen after winning a coinflip to eliminate Hevad Khan from the tournament.

Khan moved his chips into the middle holding a pocket pair of nines and Scotty looked him up with the {A-Clubs} {J-Hearts}. Scotty managed to spike not one, but two jacks to best Hevad's nines as the board filled out {J-Spades} {6-Spades} {10-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} {K-Hearts}, giving Scotty trips.

Scotty will face Ted Forrest in tomorrow's Round of 32.

The Mouth Doubles Up

In what is not turning out to be as interesting a match as we hoped, Mike "the Mouth" Matusow pushed all in with his short stack against Dario Minieri. Minieri called and the cards were quickly on their backs. Matusow had a slight edge with {7-?} {7-?} against Minieri's {A-?} {9-?}. Mouth flopped a set and turned a full house to seal the double-up.

A few hands later, Matusow made an announcement to the gallery. "I got the lead, boys and girls!"

Hersh Strikes Out; Forrest Gets Revenge

Hershiser won't be getting any autographed baseballs this year...
Ted Forrest got his revenge against former Major League Baseball pitcher Orel Hershiser, winning their Round of 64 match-up. The two also met last year in the Round of 64, but Orel won that match and moved on to reach the quarterfinals.

This time around, a short-stacked Hershiser moved all in before the flop holding {Q-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} and was quickly called by Forrest, who tabled {A-Diamonds} {K-Clubs}. The {2-?} {3-?} {8-?} {8-?} {K-?} board fell in favor of Forrest, blocking Hershiser's shot at another deep run.

Forrest will play the winner of the Scotty Nguyen v. Hevad Khan match-up tomorrow afternoon.

Wasicka Lives to See Another Flop

Things were looking pretty grim for Paul Wasicka. He moved all in as the short stack with {K-Clubs} {5-Diamonds} and was called by qualifier Nicholas Joy, who tabled {A-Hearts} {3-Spades}. Wasicka was the underdog and needed to improve to avoid elimination. He did so on a flop of {5-?} {7-?} {8-?}. The {2-?} that hit the turn gave Joy a few additional outs, but Wasicka breathed a sigh of relief when the river fell {9-Hearts}, missing Joy entirely.

For now, their match will continue.

Moneymaker Falls to Negreanu

Chris Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker
No sooner had Daniel Negreanu taken a slight chip lead from Chris Moneymaker than the two were all in again. Negreanu thought he might be in trouble based on the speed of Moneymaker's all-in call, but it turned out to be a flip: Negreanu's pocket nines against Moneymaker's {A-?} {K-?}.

Moneymaker refused to watch the flop, going so far as to walk off the set. Negreanu, having some fun at Moneymaker's expense, over-acted as if the flop had already come down and contained an ace. When the real flop came, however, it was about as good as Negreanu could have hoped for: {4-Diamonds} {9-Spades} {Q-Clubs}, giving Negreanu a set of nines.

The turn {J-Hearts} was the first half of a runner-runner combination that would give Moneymaker the win with a Broadway straight.

"It's never easy," said Negreanu.

"Don't worry, I never hit these," replied Moneymaker.

"He's moaning, he's moaning!" exclaimed a jovial Negreanu. "That should be illegal! That's so dirty. You can't do that." It didn't matter; the river was the {Q-Hearts}, making a full house for Negreanu and giving him the Round One victory.

Rousso Ousts Texas Dolly

Doyle signs an autograph before his match against Vanessa Rousso
Vanessa Rousso and Doyle Brunson got it all on on a {J-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {K-Hearts} flop; Rousso with {10-Hearts} {9-Hearts} and Brunson with {J-Diamonds} {10-Clubs}.

"Vanessa shows a flush and Doyle shows jack-ten and has a lot of work to do," said Tournament Emcee Jordan Siegel, drawing a big laugh from Daniel Negreanu over on the feature table.

Doyle found himself drawing dead by the turn after the dealer tabled the {9-Spades}.

"Doyle Brunson down... Phil Ivey to go. Jesus!" said Rousso after the match, alluding to the fact that she'll be playing Phil Ivey in the Round of 32.

Negreanu, Moneymaker Start Over

Chris Moneymaker had opened up a roughly three-to-one chip lead over Daniel Negreanu on the feature table. With the board showing {10-Hearts} {2-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} {6-Spades}, all of the chips went in the middle. Negreanu showed down top pair with {J-?} {8-?}; Moneymaker turned over {A-?} {6-?}. Moneymaker stood up and walked around the table as the river came down. He needed an ace or a six to win the match but got neither; the river fell {k-Diamonds} to double up Kid Poker and level off the match.

Tilly First Club to Fall

Jennifer Tilly
Jennifer Tilly
Well, at least Jennifer Tilly can say she got her money in good against Phil Ivey. Ivey had the chip lead when he opened with a raise from the button. Tilly moved all in and Ivey called. Tilly's {A-?} {K-?} went from the dominant preflop hand against Ivey's {A-?} {8-?} to the severely dominated hand after a flop with two eights and no kings. One of the remaining aces fell on the turn, giving Tilly at most a chop possibility, and only if the case ace hit the river. It didn't; the river was a {10-?}, eliminating Tilly and putting Ivey through to tomorrow's action.
