Day 1 Completed

That's A Wrap

Trophy
Trophy
Well, that's it for today, peeps, but your eager beaver update team will be back here tomorrow to provide you with all the action from the final 8, and then the highly anticipated final table of 6.

There is no official start time, as often seems to be the case with televised tournaments, but the players are scheduled to return at 4.30pm for interviews and whatnot with the plan being to recommence at around 5.30pm - but, as previously stated, that is only a ballpark figure.

Today has been a thrilling experience for all involved with plenty of banter, big pots and hot poker action - I fully expect tomorrow to be the same, so do please join us for the second Day of this NPL Main Event.

Over and out.

Last Hands of the Night are Action-filled

James Hart
James Hart
And the most entertaining sort: Darren Woods moves in blind, but his top card sticks to his finger and flips up - the {10-Diamonds}. This induces a call from James Hart whose {K-Hearts}{8-Clubs} looked OK until a Ten on the turn ("It's a Ten," says Darren, helpfully) knocks him down to the felt and gives Darren a new lease of life. In fact, the next hand it was another Woods vs. Hart all in blind affair - this time Darren's {Q-Clubs}{5-Clubs} outdrew his opponent yet again, and so {K-Clubs}{4-Hearts}, all in blind on the small blind, was James Hart's final hand of the tournament.

Late Night Aggression

Jason Ho
Jason Ho
With just 10 minutes remaining, a few of the players seem to be seizing on some cagey play by upping gears.

With Jason Ho raising to 2.8k pre-flop, Peter Gould makes it 8,600, thereby putting Ho to a tough decision late in the day.

Recognising that Gould was possibly preying on the fact that a few of the players might have locked up in order to avoid a final level exit, Ho observes, "You're raising here because you know I have a big stack and would have to face a potentially huge pot."

"I might have a big hand, have you thought of that?" responds Peter.

Ho takes the warning seriously and opts for a fold.

Moments later, Patrik Selin takes the 'no mess' route by moving all-in for around 20k (although it looked like more with so many low denomination chips.)

All folded enabling Patrik to crawl into Day 2.

Curiouser and Curiouser

Darren Woods raised to 3k (a tidy chunk of his remaining 10,350) preflop, but instafolded when Jason Ho made it 9k to go. Darren seems almost a bit surprised to find himself the table short stack after a long day, but with just ten minutes of play to go today he seems determined to make it back tomorrow.

Meanwhile Josh Gould plays pocket Nines very cagily - calling James Hart's preflop raise from the big blind, and checking it all the way down - shown {K-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} after the board had come out Queen high.

Gould Senior Takes A Hit

Dieter Dijkstra
Dieter Dijkstra
Raising to 4k pre-flop, Peter Gould is met by an all-in from a shortstacked Dieter Dijkstra in the cut-off. Peter makes the obligatory call and announces "race" as Dieter flips over {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}.

Peter reveals {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} but quickly sighs "well, that's no fun" as the first card out is an Ace.

The subsequent cards on a {A-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{8-Spades}{7-Clubs} board fail to provide any needed miracle.

Dan Carter the First off the Final

Having moved his short stack in preflop with quite a lot of respect twice in quick succession (and that's just while I was standing right by the table) picking up some samples of 400/800, he eventually found a re-raisable {K-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} and came over the top of Darren Woods' preflop to the tune of 12,500 all-in. A dwelling Jason Ho called with pocket Eights after a think, and they stayed good, knocking out the Kid who held the chip lead confidently for much of the day.

The Unusual Suspects

UK Open Logo
UK Open Logo
As previously reported, we are down to the final table, but with the likes of Dave Colclough, Tony G and Roland de Wolfe starting this NPL Main Event, the line up for the final 10 is an unlikely one.

There are a few recognisable names remaining in UK circuit regulars Dan Carter, Peter Gould and Jeff Buffenbarger, but it's great to see the likes of Jason Ho and Lee Watts flying the flag for the less experienced players. Lee Watts in particular seems to be living the dream tonight and would be a popular winner up North in his hometown of Sunderland.

The final 10 is as follows:

Seat 1: Josh Gould
Seat 2: Peter Gould
Seat 3: Dieter Dijkstra
Seat 4: Lee Watts
Seat 5: Darren Woods
Seat 6: James Hart
Seat 7: Dan Carter
Seat 8: Patrik Selin
Seat 9: Jeff Buffenbarger
Seat 10: Jason Ho

Pre-Final Monster Pot or Gould Senior

Peter Gould
Peter Gould
Just as it was announced that they were on their way to the final, Peter Gould got his not inconsiderable stack all in on a {8-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{9-Spades} flop, called by Patrik Selin, whose {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} were no longer any good against Gould's {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}. He moves on to the final, next to his son, with a decent stack.
