Thurlow Gets "Rivered"

Level 27 : 30,000/60,000, 30,000 ante

There was 270,000 in the middle on a board reading {a-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{q-Spades}{j-Spades} with blind-on-blind action between Justin Thurlow and Bob Van Syckle. Thurlow bet 160,000 from the small blind and Van Syckle called from the big blind to bring the river {6-Clubs}. Both players checked to take the hand to showdown.

Thurlow showed {6-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} for a rivered pair of sixes and Van Syckle tabled {k-Diamonds}{7-Spades} for a pair of sevens.

The result sent Thurlow into laughter that Gennady Shimelfarb joined in on. They joked saying that if Thurlow hadn't hit a six on the river, he would have had to have continued betting. The result would have likely won him the pot given the fact that Van Syckle had nothing more than fourth pair, but Thurlow picked up showdown value when he paired his six on the river, which caused him to check instead.

"I got rivered!" he said, still laughing over the result.
