Ruijs on a Rampage, Bags Monster Lead on PAPC Main Event Day 2

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
It was all about Joris Ruijs on Day 2
It was all about Joris Ruijs on Day 2

The second of four days in the €1,500 Patrik Antonius Poker Challenge Main Event had one man claiming the spotlight: Joris Ruijs. The Dutch high roller went on an absolute rampage during nearly eight levels of sixty minutes and bagged 1,242,000 to conclude the day. In comparison, it was nearly three (!) times as much as Kasper Mellanen, who bagged the second biggest stack with 423,000 in chips. Play continued until the bubble had burst and 20 out of 160 players will return for Day 3.

It was one of those days where Ruijs seemingly couldn't do anything wrong. While a lot of raises got through (perhaps with the worst of it), whenever Ruijs got looked up he had it. Julius Schamburg became one of the biggest victims of Ruijs' dynamism. Schamburg wielded the second biggest stack when he got moved to Ruijs' table, but lost multiple sizable pots against the Dutchman. One big pot especially, where Ruijs had flopped a flush and got paid, relegated Schamburg to spectator status in the Ruijs-show. While left severely bruised, the German did survive the onslaught and will return to the penultimate day with 119,500 in chips.

While the young Dutchman was raking in the chips, others fell by the wayside and failed to make the money. The trio of Chino Rheem, Noah Boeken, and Robert Mizrachi, all good friends of Patrik Antonius, saw their attempt to win their friend's tournament end early in the day. Day 1 chip leader Dragos Trofimov also failed to make the money, and was joined on the rail by Micha Hoedemaker, Jason Gray, and loudmouth Veki-Pella Alakorva, who's daring king-high bluff got picked off by Kasper Mellanen two spots before the money.

Sergei Istsenko bubbled the Main Event with kings against aces

Alakorva busted shortly after his ill-timed attempt, leaving the field with 21 players. They played hand-over-hand for a while before two players were all-in and at risk. Roope Tarmi was called holding ace-king on an ace-high flop, but top pair top kicker remained best to keep him alive. Sergei Istsenko was less fortunate: with pocket kings, he ran into the dreaded setup as Kaupo Tenno woke up with pocket aces to send the Russian home empty-handed.

The 20 remaining players bagged for the night directly afterward, each of them already guaranteed €2,820 for their efforts, and will return on Saturday, April 6 at noon local time to play down to 6. The winner will be crowned on Sunday, April 7, and will receive €57,200 as well as the bragging rights that come with becoming the first-ever PAPC Main Event champion.

Action at the Olympic Park Casino in Hilton Tallinn is continuing with the Player's Party downstairs, where the First Land of Poker (FLOP) app will be launched. PokerNews will cover the launch of this new social app in a separate article and will be back on the floor on Saturday as the Main Event inches closer towards a champion.

Sergei Istsenko
Sergei Istsenko

Sergei Istsenko open-shoved 57,500 from middle position. Kaupo Tenno came over the top all in from the small blind and Joris Ruijs folded the big blind.

Both players had to keep their cards closed until action concluded at the other tables, where Roope Tarmi was all in and at risk as well. Tarmi had ace-king on an ace-high flop and survived after the turn and river were safe.

The showdown between Istsenko and Tenno was next.

Sergei Istsenko: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Kaupo Tenno: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}

It was the dreaded cooler for Istsenko, who didn't get any help on a {7-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}. He congratulated Tenno and made his way off the stage. All other players are guaranteed at least €2,820 and will bag for the night.

Pyysing Survives a Bad Flop on the Bubble

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Aki Pyysing
Aki Pyysing

Henri Schalin opened for 17,000 from the hijack. Aki Pyysing jammed from the big blind for about 20,000 and Schalin made the easy call for 3,000 more.

Aki Pyysing: {k-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Henri Schalin: {k-Spades}{j-Clubs}

Pyysing was ahead before the flop but had a big sweat on his hands after his opponent paired the {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}{5-Spades} flop. The {8-Diamonds} on the turn didn't save Pyysing but he was able to complete his gutshot straight draw after the {10-Clubs} completed the board on the river to double up on the bubble.

Leinonen Doubles on Bubble with Aces

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Joris Ruijs opened for 10,000 on the button before Santtu Leinonen jammed from the big blind for 44,500. Ruijs called and the players were asked not to turn over their hands until the action was over at the other two tables.

Two minutes later, the players were instructed to turn over their cards. Leinonen turned over poker's best starting hand in {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts} and was in good shape to double up with Ruijs turning over {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}.

Leinonen survived and doubled up as the {7-Spades}{7-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Spades}{j-Hearts} board was a safe one for the Finn.

Tammel Eliminates Alakorva

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Veli-Pekka Alakorva
Veli-Pekka Alakorva

The tournament is now hand-for-hand on the bubble after Tarmo Tammel eliminated Veli-Pekka Alakorva in 22nd place.

The action folded around to blinds, when Tammel jammed for more than double the around 55,000 Alakorva had in his stack. Alakorva looked at his cards one at a time before he called.

Tarmo Tammel: {7-Diamonds}{7-Spades}
Veli-Pekka Alakorva: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

Alakorva was shouting in Finnish before the flop was dealt. Then it was back and forth with Tammel shouting with a smile on his face for a seven and Alakorva shouting for an ace or a queen.

The {10-Spades}{5-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} flop didn't pair Alakorva but did give him a gutshot straight draw, a fact not lost by Alakorva who screamed, "King, Ace, Queen" repeatedly.

The shouts continued after the {6-Spades} came on the turn. Alakorva looked stunned after the {2-Diamonds} completed the board on the river to eliminate him from the tournament.

Tammel said to Alakorva good game, who shook his opponent's hand before leaving the tournament area.

Mellanen Makes A Great Call

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Kasper Mellanen
Kasper Mellanen

Over at table 8, a pot was brewing between Veli-Pekka Alakorva and his left-hand neighbor Kasper Mellanen. On the turn with the board reading {10-Spades}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{9-Clubs}, Alakorva bet 45,000 from the big blind and Mellanen called in position.

The river brought the {8-Clubs} and Alakorva shoved all in for almost 170,000. Mellanen had a decision for his remaining stack of 140,000 and went deep in the tank. Alakorva, normally the liveliest player in the room, went uncharacteristically quiet, put on his sunglasses and put his hands over his mouth. Mellanen crossed his arms, studied the board and his opponent, then called it off for his tournament life.

"Good call, good call!" Alakorva loudly said in Finnish as he turned over {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} for the airball. A relieved Mellanen slapped {a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} onto the felt and responded with "I was quite sure you had nothing" in his mother tongue as well.

"VP" was left with just seven bigs after the big clash.

Freek Scholten Eliminated

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Freek Scholten
Freek Scholten

Despite having about 60 big blinds after the previous clash with Ruijs, it all came tumbling down for Freek Scholten in three hands. First, he lost an all in against Tarmo Tammel, where Tammel had open-shoved for 30 big blinds with {a-}{9-}. Scholten had {j-}{j-} but lost the hand to lose half his stack.

The Dutchman then bluffed it off with {j-Clubs}{9-Hearts} and shoved the river on a {q-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{4-Clubs} board. Kasper Mellanen, who had defended his big blind earlier in the hand, called it off with {a-Hearts}{4-Spades} to leave Scholten with 9 big blinds.

In the next hand, Martin Berge raised to 7,000 and Joris Ruijs called. Scholten shoved all in for 28,500, Berge isolated and Ruijs open-folded {2-Clubs}{2-Hearts}.

Freek Scholten: {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}
Martin Berge: {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

The flop was {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{2-Spades} and Ruijs let out a chuckle. The {a-Diamonds} on the turn gave Berge the lead and the {q-Hearts} river ended Scholten's run in 27th place.

Sootla Out the Door on a Bad Beat

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Ranno Sootla
Ranno Sootla

Pasi Sormunen opened for 6,000 from mid-position before Ranno Sootla jammed for about 11 big blinds from late position. The action folded back around to Sormunen.

"OK," said Sormunen before he called. "It's a gift."

Sormunen turned over {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts} and it seemed like Sootla would double with {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}.

The {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{k-Hearts} flop was a good one for Sootla. However, the {3-Spades} spiked the turn to give Sormunen a set and leave Sootla with needing just one of the two remaining sevens or two remaining tens for a save.

The {k-Diamonds} completed the board on the river and Sootla was eliminated short of the money on a bad beat.

Even Bigger Pot for Ruijs

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 2,400 ante
Joris Ruijs
Joris Ruijs

It's one big Joris Ruijs show over at table 1, who's now fully in command after taking a huge chunk off Julius Schamburg to soar to nearly 800k, about twice the stack of his nearest challenger.

In a button versus big blind situation, Ruijs limped in on the button and Schamburg checked his option. On the {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} flop, Schamburg bet 9,000 and Ruijs called. The turn brought the {3-Clubs} and Schamburg continued for 41,700, which Ruijs called again.

Schamburg slowed down and checked on the {k-Hearts} river. Ruijs came up with a bet of 142,000, which sent the German deep into the tank. Covered in his hoodie with his head buried in his hands, he tried to figure out whether Ruijs had it or not.

After nearly three minutes, he flicked in a calling chip.

"Flush," Ruijs casually said, who showed {7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}.

"Aargh, I knew it!" Schamburg exclaimed, before paying off the sizable bet with a grimace.

Big Pot for Ruijs

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Joris Ruijs
Joris Ruijs

The stack of Joris Ruijs continues to grow in leaps and bounds. He just won another big pot, this time without eliminating a player like he has done many times earlier today.

The action began with Kasper Mellanen opening to 4,500 from the cutoff. Martin Berge called from the button before Ruijs three-bet to 21,500.

Mellanen four-bet to 55,000. Berge tanked for a minute before he folded and the action paused on Ruijs also for a minute before he called.

Ruijs check-called a bet of 40,000 from Mellanen after the {5-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} came on the flop. Ruijs then put his opponent to the test with a jam that more than covered the approximately 110,000 Mellanen had in his hand after the {6-Diamonds} came on the turn. Mellanen was in the tank for about 90 seconds before he opted to fold.

After the hand, Ruijs' stack grew to around 585,000, which is more than enough to claim the chip lead.
