Esfandiari Can't Talk His Way to a Win

Level 27 : 400,000/800,000, 800,000 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

Feature Table:

Antonio Esfandiari came into the day as one of the short stacks and in just the second hand of the day, the 'Magician' raised to 13.5 million from middle position with {a-Spades}{j-Clubs}. Matthew Volosevich re-raised all in for around 31.0 million with {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} in the hijack and Marc-Andre Ladouceur also had a strong hand in the cutoff. Ladouceur looked down at {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts} but elected to fold after a moment. The action was back on Esfandiari and he made the call for his last 2.0 million.

The flop came {k-Spades}{10-Clubs}{8-Clubs} and Volosevich was still in the lead although Esfandiari did pick up a straight draw to go with his two overcards. "Come on Mathieu," he could be heard saying to the dealer, encouraging him to work his magic. The turn was the {5-Diamonds} and the river landed the {2-Diamonds}. Esfandiari was unable to connect with the board and Volosevich eliminated the star of the party at the feature table.

Big Slick Gets the Double for Lagos

Prinz folded to Benko who thought for a few moments before making the call. Players flipped their cards and Lagos would be at risk of elimination.

George Lagos: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Michael Benko: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}

The flop came down {q-Hearts}{j-Spades}{q-Clubs} and Benko's two pair was still ahead. The {j-Spades} hit the turn and Benko was counterfeited, left drawing to a nine on the river. The {k-Diamonds} on the river did not help Benko and Lagos got the double up.
