Veliu Bags Narrow Lead over Shvarts on Day 1b

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Alida Veliu
Alida Veliu

A little after midnight, Day 1b of Parx Big Stax 1100 wrapped up, and the leaderboard looks quite a bit different compared to Day 1a. Whereas Greg Fishberg dominated the final standings with a stack that far outpaced the count of anyone else, the Day 1b counts are more tightly contested.

At the top sits Alida Veliu, although there's no meaningful separation between the 462,000 she finished with and the 461,000 bagged by Grigoriy Shvarts. They have the top two counts of the 48 who made it through, with Jonathan Diolosa (447,000) and Matt Costanzo (423,500) the only others north of 400K.

Veliu actually surpassed 500,000 on at least two occasions, but she hit a slight downswing before the end of the night, highlighted by doubling up Michael Stashin with pocket eights against pocket aces. Still, she'll have over 90 big blinds to start Day 2.

Shvarts had his run toward the lead halted when he stepped away from the tournament for a bit. He cracked an opponent's aces with king-queen, hitting quad kings and getting his river shove paid, but he didn't stick around to enjoy his newfound chips. Saying he wasn't feeling well, Shvarts took his leave from the tournament but returned just before it was time to bag.

Other notables advancing included both Mukul and Vinny Pahuja, DJ MacKinnon, Roman Valerstein and all-time Parx money leader Joe Palma.

Anyone who didn't advance still has a chance to get back in with the early part of Day 2 being open to registration, although players will only start with 10 big blinds. The total field has grown to 357 with the Day 1b entries totaling 217 of that, and 79 players have now punched tickets to Day 2.

Action resumes for Day 2 at 11 a.m. local time here at Parx, so come back to PokerNews then for more coverage.

Stashin Doubles Through Veliu

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Michael Stashin
Michael Stashin

Alida Veliu opened for 8,000 early and received one call before Michael Stashin made it 28,000 on the button. Veliu called, the other player folded, and both players checked the flop to a board of {6-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. Veliu checked again and Stashin shoved for 56,000.

"I wanted to do it preflop," Veliu muttered. "OK, merry Christmas."

Veliu's {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} was way behind Stashin's {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}. She asked for an eight on the river but the dealer delivered the {10-Hearts} and she complimented Stashin on a nice hand.

Santoro Makes a Huge Call

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Parx Big Stax 31 1100 Day 1a
Parx Big Stax 31 1100 Day 1a

On a {k-Spades}{4-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop, Luigi Santoro was in middle position and facing a shove from a player on the button. The shove was worth about 33,000, the size of the pot. Santoro didn't cover by much but he stuck in his chips anyway and showed {a-Spades}{5-Spades}. It was good as his opponent had {q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}.

"Queen or ten!" the all in player urged, and he got his wish right away with the {q-Spades}.

However, Santoro was the one pumping his fist when the {4-Spades} completed the board to give him a flush, leaving the disbelieving player wondering how he got called but offering a fist bump anyway.

Ibrahim Doubles Through MacKinnon

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Patrick Ibrahim
Patrick Ibrahim

We found DJ MacKinnon facing an all-in shove by Patrick Ibrahim on the river. The board read {4-Spades}{3-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and Ibrahim's shove was worth about 31,000, with the pot a little over 40,000. MacKinnon muttered to himself and shook his head, then slid in enough to call the jam.

Ibrahim showed {k-}{k-} and MacKinnon flicked his cards indicate a muck. The dealer instructed him to show and he flashed what looked like {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}.

DJ MacKinnon
DJ MacKinnon

After an under-the-gun open and a call, DJ MacKinnon announced 4,000 on the button. The small blind kicked it up again to 12,000 and action folded back to MacKinnon. He said he was all in, cutting out a stack that appeared to be 43,600. His opponent grumbled something we didn't catch and folded.

Welcome to Day 1b of Parx Big Stax 1100

Parx Big Stax 31 1100 Day 1a
Parx Big Stax 31 1100 Day 1a

One flight is in the books and that means one still remains in Parx Big Stax 1100.

The popular Philadelphia-area venue will once again open its doors to players just before 11 a.m. as Day 1b is set to begin, with a plan to run in identical fashion to Day 1a. Players will again receive 50,000 in starting chips, representing a massive stack for the early portions of the day as blinds begin at 100/100 and escalate until Level 15 (2,000/4,000/4,000) is played to end the night.

Each of those levels will last 40 minutes apiece, with a 75-minute dinner break thrown in around 6:30 p.m. local time.

The event offers unlimited reentry for those inclined to fire multiple shells, and players can get comfortable at eight-handed tables.

Stay tuned to PokerNews to see if anyone can reach the bar set by local crusher Greg Fishberg, who bagged a monstrous 719,000.
