Matches in Progress

Toby Lewis - 87,000
Luc Lafontaine - 63,000

Michael Binger - 78,000
Darren Kennedy - 72,000

Randal Flowers - 103,000
Chris Klodnicki - 47,000

Humberto Brenes - 13,000
Shyam Srinivasan - 42,000
Andrew Seidman - 95,000

Humberto Quieted

Level 9 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante

"Huuuuuumberto!"

That's our cue to check on Brenes, and we walked over to see that he had Andrew Seidman all in and drawing slim. There was a flop of {5-Diamonds} {3-Clubs} {Q-Spades} out on board, Seidman had {Q-Hearts} {9-Spades}, and he eventually got to see the {Q-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} that Brenes had been bragging about. Seidman needed some help in a hurry.

The turn brought some help; the {5-Clubs} counterfeited Brenes' two pair, and that was wildly entertaining for Seidman and table mate Shyam Srinivasan, who started giggling like school children. Brenes was a bit miffed, and he lamented the ongoing bad luck he's had at his table. The river {6-Spades} didn't even let him take half the pot, and Seidman has doubled up to about 95,000. Brenes is down to 13,000.

DeBora Bests de Melo

Level 9 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante

Fatima Moreira de Melo was down to about 32,000 when she open-shoved from the button. Greg DeBora let a wry smile out, and he considered for a minute or so before making the call to put de Melo at risk. It was a race, as Debora likely suspected:

de Melo: {K-Hearts} {J-Diamonds}
DeBora: {2-Spades} {2-Hearts}

The board ran out {Q-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} {A-Clubs} {4-Spades} {6-Clubs}, and de Melo could not catch up. She's been eliminated as the runner up for Table 15, but that's likely not much consolation. DeBora is on to the Round of 36.

Filippi Flies Past Somerville and Kessler

Level 9 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante

Jason Somerville moved all in on the button for his short stack and was immediately called by Amnon Filippi in the small blind. Allen Kessler folded from the big blind and the cards were turned over:

Somerville: {J-Clubs}{7-Spades}
Filippi: {A-Spades}{9-Clubs}

The board ran out {8-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{4-Spades} and Somerville made his exit, leaving Filippi to do heads-up battle with Kessler.

A few hands later, Filippi raised to 8,500, Kessler reraised to 20,000, Filippi moved all in, and Kessler called.

Filippi: {A-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Kessler: {A-Diamonds}{3-Spades}

The {A-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{7-Spades} flop left Kessler drawing thin and the {7-Hearts} turn left him drawing to a seven for a chop. The river was the {J-Hearts} and Filippi became victor of Table 19.

Chartier Advances As Does Czuczor, Deeb, Pilossoph, and Wice

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Jonathan Aguiar was all in for his last 30,000 or so with {A-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and up against the {K-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} of Samuel Chartier. The flop came down {5-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{K-Clubs} to give Chariter the lead, one he would keep through the {4-Diamonds} turn and {K-Hearts} river. Chartier took down Table 33 and will advance to Round 2.

Also advancing were Marton Czuczor on Table 13, William Pilossoph from Table 31, and Alex Wice, who defeated Ali Eslami over at Table 9.

Brothers in Arms

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Michael Binger was well under 20,000 chips at one stage in his heads-up match, but he has mounted quite the comeback. Our last check had him on the verge of closing out the match with a big chip lead.

Binger and his opponent Darren Kennedy got it all in preflop on a coin flip. Kennedy had the pair of {4-Spades} {4-Hearts}, and he was looking to hold up to stay alive against Binger's {A-Diamonds} {J-Clubs}. How about a sweat?

The flop came {2-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds}, and it was still essentially a race with two cards to come. From the rail, Nick Binger (who has already advanced through Round 1) came wandering over to sweat it out with his bro. When then {10-Hearts} hit the turn, the brothers looked at each other and said, "Too many outs," in unison. They chuckled, but they were correct in their foreshadowing.

The blank {3-Clubs} filled out the board, and Binger will have to keep battling. Kennedy is back up to 58,000 with that double up.

Flowers Blooming

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Randal Flowers has now taken a significant lead in his three-handed battle with Yury Kerzhapkin and Chris Klodnicki.

On the last hand, we just caught the final bet on a board of {J-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} {6-Spades} {J-Spades} {Q-Clubs}. Flowers made a pot-sized bet of 25,600, and Chris Klodnicki tanked and called for about 40% of his stack. Flowers tabled {8-Hearts} {8-Clubs} for the full house. Klodnicki looked a bit frustrated as he dropped his cards into the muck and counted out the debt.

We couldn't hear what he told Flowers he held, but Flowers seemed to be on the same page. "I think you're getting too good a price to fold there. I'm definitely bluffing sometimes there."

Flowers - 90,000
Klodnicki - 42,000
Kerzhapkin - 18,000

Round II For Lind III

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Gregory Merson was down to ten big blinds when he open-shoved with {K-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds}. George Lind III looked down at {A-Hearts} {8-Hearts}, and he made the call with a chance to end the match.

The {9-Diamonds} {A-Spades} {3-Clubs} flop was just what Lind was looking for, but the {Q-Diamonds} turn gave Merson a lot of outs to work with. He missed, though, and the {9-Clubs} river has given Lind the bounty and the $10,000 he's guaranteed for making it through this opening round.
