Danchev Leads Final 21; Sabat Makes Top-40 Finish For Third Year In A Row

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Dimitar Danchev
Dimitar Danchev

The 2013 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event continued on Friday as the remaining 59 entrants of a 987-player field returned for four more levels of action. After six hours of play, that field had been whittled down to the final 21. Leading the pack is Dimitar Danchev, who bagged up the chip lead with 4,080,000.

Danchev hit a heater late in the day, as evidenced by one of the last hands before bagging and tagging.

Another player who chipped up here on Day 4 was Owen Crowe, who eliminated Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov along the way. It happened when Katchalov open-shipped all in for his last roughly 305,000 from the button and Crowe, who was recently moved to Katchalov's table, flatted from the small blind. The big blind folded and the hands were tabled.

Katchalov: {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}
Crowe: {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}

Katchalov was in dire straits and it got even worse when Crowe flopped a full house. The {8-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{8-Spades} flop left Katchlov looking for running sixes to stay alive. The {4-Clubs} turned and sealed Katchlov's fate in 29th place for $47,000. The meaningless {J-Spades} completed the board and Crowe was able to drag in a pot that boosted his stack to about 2.48 million.

In addition, Ryan Fair fared well on Day 4 starting in Level 20. It was there the 2010 SCOOP Main Event champion opened under the gun for 22,000 received calls from four other players, which meant it was five-handed action to the {2-Hearts}{8-Spades}{2-Spades} flop.

Two checks put action on Fair, who bet 65,000. Michael Malm folded, Darren Elias, who won the 2012 WCOOP $10,300 High Roller event, called from the button, and both blinds got out of the way, making it heads-up action to the {Q-Clubs} turn. This time Fair check-called a bet of 66,000, and then checked the {6-Clubs} river. Elias moved all in and Fair called off holding {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts} for queens full. Elias then showed {A-Clubs}{2-Clubs} and watched some chips sent over to a tough opponent.

In the next level, Fair doubled through Elias again on a {10-Hearts}{7-Spades}{4-} flop with about 70,000 in the pot. Elias had just bet 28,000 only to have Fair raise to 103,000. "All in," Elias said to put his opponent at risk.

"Call," Fair snapped to commit his stack of 499,000. Elias then flipped {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, but it was no good as Fair held {4-Spades}{4-Clubs}. The {3-Clubs} turn left Elias drawing dead, and after the {J-Clubs} was put out on the river for good measure, Fair was pushed the massive pot.

Unfortunately not everyone did so well on Day 4. Among those who fell were two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winners Scott Clements (55th - $32,000) and Greg Mueller (40th - $39,000); circuit regular Andy Philachack (53rd - $32,000); recent WCOOP Main Event runner-up Ryan "TheCart3r" Carter (52nd - $32,000); Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody (47th - $32,000); PokerStars Team Online's Tatiana Barausova (46th - $32,000); Day 2 chip leader and $10 qualifier Nicolas Godoy (42nd - $32,000); and 2001 WSOP Main Event champ Carlos Mortensen (36th – $39,000).

While many notables fell, a few managed to punch their ticket to the penultimate day including 2012 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final champion Mohsin Charania; recent World Poker Tour Montreal champ Jonathan Roy; poker pro and noted commentator Olivier Busquet; one of the Mizrachi Brothers, Robert Mizrachi; and feared Europeans Yann Dion, Manig Loeser and Mikal Blomlie, just to name a few.

It’s also worth noting that Eddy Sabat is among the top 21, giving him a top-40 finish for the third year in a row—he took 30th in 2001 for $66,000 and 40th last year for $41,000. Will this be the year Sabat finally breaks through? If it is, he’ll have his work cut out for himself as he will begin Day 5 with a below-average stack of 714,000.

Day 5 is scheduled to kick off at 12:00 p.m. EST on Saturday when the final 21 players will play down to the final table of eight. Join us then as the PokerNews Live Reporting Team brings you all the action from the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

Danchev Seizes Chip Lead; Eliminates Kelly

Dimitar Danchev gets a fist bump from Ryan Fair after winning the hand

Dimitar Danchev opened to 40,000 from under the gun plus one. Ryan Fair called from the hijack and Patrick Kelly peeked at his cards from the cutoff. Kelly three-bet to 202,000, only to see Danchev come right back over the top for 460,000 after about 90 seconds. Fair threw his hand away and Kelly flat called.

The two saw {10-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{7-Clubs} fall and Danchev continued for 360,000. Kelly then announced that he was all in. Danchev was in utter agony and mulled over the decision for more than three minutes. Eventually he called and learned he was well ahead.

Danchev: {K-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Kelly: {7-Spades}{6-Spades}

The turn was the {2-Clubs} and the river the {2-Diamonds}, ensuring that Danchev's kings held. He will now be the chip leader going into Day 5 with around 4.1 million in chips.

Joe Serock - Eliminated

George Clyde-Smith opened to 40,000 from the hijack seat, Joe Serock three-bet jammed for 370,000 from the big blind, and Clyde-Smith called.

Clyde-Smith: {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Serock: {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}

Serock had his bag on and was wandering away from the table as the flop fell {k-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{k-Spades}. He took a few more steps towards the door as the {k-Clubs} turned, and stopped briefly to shake a few hands, including Clyde-Smith's, when the {j-Clubs} completed the board.

Serock, who had two million chips at one point today, was eliminated, while Clyde-Smith now has 1.4 million.

Kelly Clips Elias and Knocks Out Benger in Big Hand

Patrick Kelly
Patrick Kelly

From the hijack seat, Darren Elias raised to 33,000 to kick off the action. Griffin Benger moved all in on the button for 154,000, then action moved over to Patrick Kelly in the big blind. Kelly thought about it for a little bit, then made the call. Elias was back up and took a minute before grabbing much more than 154,000. He cocked back some chips and fired out a reraise to 325,000. Kelly didn't take long to make the call.

Kelly and Elias were still in action on the {10-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{4-Clubs} flop with Benger all in and looking on. Kelly was first and checked. Elias put forward a bet of 250,000, but he was met with a raise all in from Kelly. Elias had a bit over 600,000 behind and went into the tank. Eventually, he gave it up, and Kelly won the side pot.

Kelly revealed the {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades} for a flopped set of fives. Benger held the {A-Spades}{10-Hearts} for top pair, top kicker, but was behind.

The turn was the {3-Clubs}, and the river was the {A-Hearts}. Benger made two pair, but two pair doesn't beat a set and he was eliminated from play. With that pot, Kelly jumped back into the lead with 2.315 million in chips.

Darren Elias and Michael Malm were heads up in a three-bet pot with the board reading {2-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Hearts}. Elias led out from the small blind for what looked like 80,000, and Malm moved all in for effectively 524,000. Elias snap-called.

Elias: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Malm: {3-Clubs}{3-Spades}

The turn and river came {5-Diamonds}, {j-Diamonds}, doubling Elias to 1.2 million chips. Malm sunk down to around 195,000.

The Matador Falls

Carlos Mortensen (Day 3) - Eliminated
Carlos Mortensen (Day 3) - Eliminated

The 2001 World Series of Poker Main Event champion has fallen.

We arrived at the table to see Carlos Mortensen three-bet his stack all in holding {8-Hearts}{8-Spades}. He was called by the {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} of Maxim Panyak.

The flop brought {10-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} giving Panyak additional outs to take the lead by making Broadway with a queen. The {q-Diamonds} was exactly what fell on the turn and Mortensen's run at the 2013 PCA Main Event came to an end. The meaningless {9-Clubs} completed the board and Mortensen quickly exited the tournament area.

Goodbye, Godoy

Nicolas Godoy
Nicolas Godoy

It's been quite a ride for 19-year-old Nicolas Godoy of Argentina. The $10 PokerStars qualifier traveled to the Bahamas with his aunt and uncle to play the 2013 PCA, emerged as the Day 2 chip leader, and established himself as a force in the tournament. Unfortunately for Godoy, his inspiring run has just come to an end.

It happened on a {8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs} flop when Godoy checked and Michael Lipman bet 45,000. Godoy responded by check-raising to 115,000, and then called off for 250,000 or so when Lipman moved all in.

Lipman: {K-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Godoy: {9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}

Lipman didn't have much, but it was out in front of Godoy's open-ended straight draw. "High cards, high cards," Lipman pleaded. The dealer obliged with the {Q-Hearts} on the turn.

The {3-Clubs} river wasn't a high card, but it was still safe. "That's what I'm talking about," Lipman shouted as he did a victory lap around the area. On the other end of the table, a dejected Godoy gathered his things and made his way to the payout desk. Not a bad payday off a $10 investment.

Meanwhile, Mazin Khoury was eliminated at an outer table.
