Astapau Gives It Up on the Flop

Level 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Action folded to Dani Stern on the button and he raised to 5,000. Anton Astapau pushed back with a three-bet to 17,500 from the big blind, and Stern thought for a bit before four-betting to 35,000. Astapau hit the tank for a couple of minutes before making the call, and then promptly checked the {7-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{3-Hearts} flop.

Stern continued for 25,000, and Astapau wasted little time in folding.

Big River Bet from Dvoress Against Perkins

Level 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

From under the gun, Daniel Dvoress raised to 4,500. Talal Shakerchi called from the next seat, Bill Perkins called on the button, and Mike McDonald called from the big blind.

All four players saw the flop come out {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}, and action was checked to Dvoress. He bet 10,000, only Perkins called, and the turn was the {8-Hearts}. Both Dvoress and Perkins checked fourth street to see the {2-Clubs} land on the river and complete the board. Dvoress fired 65,000, and Perkins folded.

Kanit Busts Out a Little DJ Casper After Beating Holz

Level 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Fedor Holz bet 12,500 on the {K-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop, and Mustapha Kanit made the call to see the {A-Hearts} land on the turn. Holz bet 14,500, and Kanit called again.

The river was the {7-Spades}, and Holz fired 36,500. Kanit called.

Holz tabled the {J-Spades}{10-Spades} for jack high, and it was Kanit's {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts} for top pair of aces that won the pot.

As Kanit was being pushed the pot, he yelled out "Everybody clap your hands!" from the DJ Casper song the Cha Cha Slide. After he did, Scott Seiver joined him in rapidly clapping their hands together.

Schwartz Busy Bogarting the Chips

Level 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

After winning a large pot off Isaac Baron (one that we unfortunately missed), Noah Schwartz won another big one off Nick Petrangelo.

We picked up the action on an {8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} flop when Connor Drinan checked from the big blind and Petrangelo bet 9,000 from the under-the-gun position. Schwartz quickly called from the cutoff, Drinan folded, and the {K-Spades} appeared on the turn, which saw Petrangelo bet 24,000.

"You want me to call?" Schwartz asked. Petrangelo indicated that he did indeed, and Schwartz obliged by tossing in the chips.

The {10-Spades} turn saw Petrangelo slow down with a check, and Schwartz immediately told the dealer, "I'm gonna wager 61,000."

Petrangelo gave it some thought but ultimately released, which promoted Schwartz to show the {10-Diamonds}. Petrangelo asked what the other card was, Schwartz told him a ten, and Petrangelo bemoaned the fold as he claimed to have folded the same hand.

Perky Takes Esfandiari for $1,000

Level 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

"Perky, let's auction for $1,000 on how long she gets here with the food," Antonio Esfandiari yelled over to the table behind him where Bill Perkins was seated.

Perkins and Esfandiari had ordered food together and it was supposed to be on the way, so Esfandiari wanted to bet $1,000 on the time in which the food would arrive. He first asked Perkins, who had ordered the food, what sort of knowledge he had that would give him an advantage. Perkins showed Esfandiari his phone with the string of text messages about the delivery to make things fair for everyone.

Esfandiari started the bidding at two minutes. Perkins quickly bumped that up to seven minutes, and Esfandiari immediately bought.

"Buy," he said emphatically.

"You're taking the under?" asked Perkins.

"Yes," responded Esfandiari.

The time was 3:32 p.m. and Esfandiari needed the food to arrive within the next seven minutes to win. But with one minute to go, he began to really get worried about his chances, and they certainly did not look good.

"Perky, can I buy out?" Esfandiari asked.

"I think I'll let you save a dollar," responded Perkins.

"A dollar!" Esfandiari yelled. "You see what he does to me? How he tortures me? A dollar! She said she got the shakes and that she was on her way. How long does it take?"

"I'm on my second bullet, but at least I can brag about how it only cost me $99,000 instead of $100,000," laughed Perkins.

The food did not show up within the seven-minute window, and Perkins won the $1,000 from Esfandiari.

Kaverman Not Looking to Repeat as GPI King

Level 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Byron Kaverman
Byron Kaverman

Career years are, by definition, outliers, usually born of a convergence of good fortune and peaking abilities.

If 2015 was Byron Kaverman's career year, it was an impressive one indeed, as he put up $3.4 million in cashes, more than double his previous best year, 2014. Furthermore, Kaverman accumulated enough results to top the Global Poker Index rankings and take home GPI Player of the Year. He edged out fellow Americans Anthony Zinno, Steve O'Dwyer, and Nick Petrangelo for the honors.

"It was a pretty rewarding feeling," Kaverman said. "It was fun competing with guys like Anthony and Steve. We all wanted to win, and they had tremendous years as well. They probably did better than I did, money-wise. We were all friendly about it, and it made for a cool competition."

Though being at the summit of the profession is on the mind of any top tournament player, Kaverman said one tour stop in particular changed the course of his year and really set him on a mission. At European Poker Tour Barcelona in late August, Kaverman put together a string of cashes with ninth in the €50,000 Super High Roller for €123,600, seventh in a €5,200 Hyper Turbo side event for €23,680, and 38th in the €10,300 High Roller for €24,600.

Those cashes pushed Kaverman to third in the GPI rankings after a summer that saw him claim his first World Series of Poker gold bracelet and more than $650,000 in prize money for winning the prestigious $10,000 Six-Max Championship. At that point, he decided to go for it.

"I only planned on playing Barcelona and Vegas stuff this fall," he said. "I made [GPI Player of the Year] a goal after Barcelona to really go for it. I put a lot of time and effort into traveling and playing a lot of tournaments that would qualify. To be fortunate enough to get there was a good feeling."

Still, the grind took a bit of a toll on Kaverman, as it involved constant travel as he pushed himself to accumulate as many points as possible. He was rewarded when he shipped the €10,300 High Roller at EPT Malta for $430,800, and he hung on to the top spot despite O'Dwyer taking down the €50,000 High Roller at EPT Prague.

"I went from Vegas to Prague to Florida and back to Vegas," Kaverman said of his journeys. "I wouldn't say burned out, but I was definitely pretty tired when it came to mid-December. It's definitely not something I'm going to be going for this year."

Kaverman is nonetheless off to a good start in 2016 as he has increased his starting stack of 250,000 to about 320,000 at first break of the $100,000 Super High Roller at PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. He has done so despite grinding at a six-handed table against the likes of Jason Koon, Christoph Vogelsang, Stephen Chidwick, Dani Stern, and Anton Astapau.

"I got here a little late, but I'm excited for this one," Kaverman said of his first big tournament of 2016. "Everyone [at my table] is very good, but we're having a good time chatting it up."

Katz Enters, Loses Pot to Alvarado

Level 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Cary Katz recently entered the tournament and got right into action. On the {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}{10-Spades} flop, Katz checked, and Alvarado bet 5,200. Katz check-raised to 11,200, and Alvarado made the call.

The turn {2-Clubs} and river {5-Hearts} were both checked by Katz and Alvarado to get to the showdown. That's where Katz tabled the {A-Spades}{8-Clubs} for top pair, but he lost to Alvarado's {K-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} for two pair.
