WSOP Main Event Runner-Up Josh Beckley Leads Final Nine in PCA $25,000 High Roller

Josh Beckley

World Series of Poker Main Event runner-up Josh Beckley led the way after two days of action in the $25,000 High Roller at the 2016 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. Beckley finished Day 2 atop the final nine with 2.146 million after he shot up the leaderboard throughout the 11 levels that were played.

In one huge hand, Beckley knocked out Nick Yunis and Darren Elias when his aces held against pocket sevens and pocket fives, respectively. He then slowed down the rush of two-time WSOP bracelet winner Brian Yoon, who was charging in the final level before Beckley put his foot down.

Joe McKeehen, the man who defeated Beckley in November to earn poker's most prestigious prize, already booked an impressive seven-figure score in the $100,000 Super High Roller earlier at this stop, and now it's Beckley who will look to do the same if he can ride his chip lead to a victory on Thursday's Day 3. However Beckley finishes, both he and McKeehen have started 2016 off with solid showings utilizing the momentum they closed out last year with.

The end of the night was hectic, with eliminations piling up once the players reached the money. Keven Stammen was the first to hit the payout desk in 31st place, and others that fell included Marvin Rettenmaier (27th), Nick Yunis (25th), Faraz Jaka (21st), Adrian Mateos (18th), Greg Merson (13th), and Jeff Gross (12th).

On the final hand of play on Day 2, Dario Sammartino busted Robert Gorodestsky in 10th place when both made top pair of kings on the turn in a three-bet pot, but Sammartino's ace kicker trumped Gorodetsky's jack kicker. That meant that the players bagged up and redrew to a single table where they will return on Thursday at noon local time.

Beckley, Yoon, and Sammartino will be joined by Chance Kornuth, Anton Astapau, Sean Winter, Andrey Zaichenko, Nick Maimone, and Ben Heath at the final table, and they will return to play down to a winner with coverage right here on PokerNews.

Robert Gorodetsky Eliminated in 10th Place ($98,820)

Level 21 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Robert Gorodetsky - 10th Place
Robert Gorodetsky - 10th Place

Robert Gorodetsky opened for 40,000 in the cutoff and snap-called a three-bet to 135,000 from button Dario Sammartino. The flop came {7-Spades}{q-Hearts}{3-Spades} and both checked. Gorodetsky came out betting with 120,000 on the {k-Clubs} turn, and Sammartino called. On the {2-Diamonds} river, Sammartino told the dealer he was all in after Gorodetsky checked to him.

A frustrated Gorodetsky shot out of his chair, at risk for his last 300,000 or so. He paced away from the table then walked back and verbalized a call. Sammartino showed {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}, and Gorodetsky winged his cards muckward, where the dealer flipped them over: {k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}.

Yoon Comes Back Down to Earth

Level 21 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

After a crazy upswing, which saw Brian Yoon shoot from 300,000 to over 1 million, he ended up losing a hand against Josh Beckley for about 200,000.

Yoon raised preflop to 45,000 and Beckley reraised to 165,000. Yoon called and it was heads up to the flop of {10-Hearts}{7-Spades}{9-Clubs}.

Both players checked the flop and the turn was the {9-Spades}. Beckley checked again and Yoon bet 180,000. Beckley called.

The river was the {j-Diamonds} and Beckley slid out of a bet of 500,000. Yoon folded.

Chance Kornuth, who was sitting next to him, encouraged him to show and Beckley let him pick one. The card Kornuth exposed was the {a-Diamonds}.

"I don't know what that means," Kornuth said.

"Probably better than what I had," said Yoon.

Jean-Pascal Savard Eliminated in 11th Place ($98,820)

Level 21 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Jean-Pascal Savard - 11th Place
Jean-Pascal Savard - 11th Place

Jean-Pascal Savard shoved from the button over a Josh Beckley cutoff open, and the 2015 WSOP Main Event runner-up called, revealing {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}. Savard put his head down and flicked {a-Hearts}{10-Spades} in, knowing this was likely the end of the line for him.

Beckley called for low cards, but the {j-Spades}{k-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop paired him instead. Now fading queens, he managed to do so with a {3-Diamonds} turn and {k-Hearts} river.

Yoon Can Always Have What Yoon Want

Level 21 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Brian Yoon
Brian Yoon

Brian Yoon is on an insane run and most of the chips he's earned this level have come off Dario Sammartino.

On this hand, Yoon opened to 45,000 from the button preflop. Sammartino reraised, making it 118,000 and Yoon called.

The flop came {j-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{4-Hearts} and Sammartino led for 80,000. Yoon didn't take very long to call.

The turn was the {k-Hearts} and Sammartino bet 140,000. Again, Yoon called pretty quickly.

The river was the {4-Spades} and the betting was done for both, as they checked in turn. Sammartino showed {a-}{5-} and Yoon won the pot with {a-Spades}{j-Clubs} for a pair of jacks.

Kornuth Lets Beckley Choose

Level 21 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Four players saw a {5-Spades}{3-Hearts}{j-Clubs} flop for 55,000 apiece, and Josh Beckley bet 125,000 after the blinds checked. Chance Kornuth was the only taker, from the button, and Beckley checked the {8-Diamonds} turn. Kornuth thought awhile and slid in a two-towered bet of 155,000. Beckley tanked a few minutes before letting his hand go.

"Want to pick one?" Kornuth offered with a smile.

"Yes," Beckley said, returning the grin after flipping the leftmost card from his perspective, which was the {a-Clubs}.
