Final 20 Reached in 2019 PCA Main Event; Nguyen Leads, Rheem, Berkey, Eibinger, Vogelsang in Contention

The 2019 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) Main Event has passed the halfway point with three out of five days in the books. A field that started out with 865 hopefuls has been whittled down to the final 20, and each of them is looking to take home the first place prize of $1,567,100 that will be awarded on Wednesday, January 16.

Usually, there's a clear chipleader or a select few that stand out from the pack, but not this time. Although WSOP Monster Stack winner Tommy Nguyen claimed the coveted top spot with 2,705,000, there's plenty of others hot on his heels. Jeff Hakim (2,640,000) is only two big blinds away from being top dog, Daniel Strelitz (2,615,000) trails just by another big blind and EPT Prague $50k High Roller champ Matthias Eibinger (2,485,000) is in striking distance as well.

Besides these four, each very accomplished players in their own right, there's plenty of star quality still in contention. A clear indication of how stacked the field is is that just out of the top 10 alone, nine players boast over $1 million in lifetime winnings on The Hendon Mob. Elite high stakers Matt Berkey (1,570,000) and Christoph Vogelsang (1,240,000), WPT champ Brian Altman (1,785,000), Mihai Manole (1,325,000), Simon Deadman (750,000), Aussie Millions champ Ami Barer (570,000), and Danny Tang (245,000) are among those still vying for the coveted trophy.

Chino Rheem
David "Chino" Rheem will be back on Day 4

The biggest name left in the field is that of David "Chino" Rheem (1,425,000). Although Rheem's checkered past may has divided the poker world's opinion of him over the years, he's still a force to be reckoned with at the tables. A win in the Main Event would be a career highlight and lift him over the $10 million in lifetime winnings. The American ended the day in the middle of the pack after flirting with elimination earlier in a hand against Eibinger, where Rheem rivered a crucial straight to stay in contention.

Between all the heavy hitters, the odd man out is Scott Wellenbach who's likely to have the railbirds rooting for him on the penultimate day. Wellenbach, a 66-year old Buddhist text translator from Halifax, Canada, has vouched to donate all his winnings in this event to charity. In an interview with PokerNews, Wellenbach described his day as a huge rollercoaster, talked about his respect for the competition and about charity. Wellenbach ended the day with 1,135,000 in chips.

While all aforementioned players will be back, among those that fell by the wayside on Day 3 is Filipe Oliveira, who was the last player to miss out of Day 4. Just two months ago, the Portuguese won the MILLIONS event in the Bahama's for $1.5M. His second deep run on the Caribbean island ended against Vogelsang with king-jack versus ace-jack and he took home $52,440 this time.

The final two Team PokerStars Ambassadors Andre Akkari (24th - $44,060) and Randy Lew (43rd - $28,520) were also eliminated on Day 3. They were joined on the rail by the likes of start-of-the-day Pierre Calamusa, Maria Ho, Scott Clements, Dzmitry Urbanovich, Anthony Zinno, and Claas Segebrecht. Segebrecht was clashing with Deadman at the feature table all day, and lost an unlucky pocket aces versus ace-king hand before getting bluffed off a big hand. Deadman then finished what he started and eliminated Segebrecht just after the dinner break.

On Tuesday at noon local time, the 20 remaining players will return for the penultimate day of the Main Event. Each of them has already locked up $60,840 for their efforts but all eyes are on the first place prize of $1,567,100. Blinds will resume in the level 10,000/25,000 with a big blind ante of 25,000. Levels will be 90 minutes throughout the day and play will continue until the final 6 players have been reached. PokerNews is on the floor to cover the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure start to finish so make sure to check back regularly for all the updates from the Atlantis Resort in the Bahama's!

Filipe Oliveira Eliminated in 21st Place ($52,440)

Filipe Oliveira
Filipe Oliveira

Filipe Oliveira raised to 245,000 on the button, leaving himself with just 55,000 behind. Christoph Vogelsang three-bet shoved from the big blind and, with a payjump in sight, took his time.

Oliveira laughed at Vogelsang, as they both knew what was up. He stood up and looked at the other table before calling it off.

Filipe Oliveira: {K-Hearts}{J-Spades}
Christoph Vogelsang: {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}

Vogelsang revealed first and Oliveira, after seeing Vogelsang's hand, showed only his jack at first to keep the other card a secret. The dealer didn't allow it and both cards had to be tabled.

The board ran out {7-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} and Oliveira was drawing dead by the time the turn had arrived. The winner of the MILLIONS event in the Bahamas two months ago took home $52,440 for another Caribbean deep run.

Andre Akkari from one seat over moved all in for around 270,000 and the action folded back to Rheem. By then, he had put his phone down and snap-called, then immediately said "good luck" to Akkari.

Day 2 Chip Leader Calamusa Eliminated

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Pierre Calamusa
Pierre Calamusa

To say it hasn't been the best of days for Pierre Calamusa at the table is quite the understatement. The Frenchman, who started off as the chip leader, couldn't get much going throughout Day 3 and was down to about 200,000 in chips when his final hand occured.

After unknown preflop action, the flop came {A-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{10-Spades}. Calamusa checked, Daniel Strelitz bet 45,000, Calamusa check-shoved and Strelitz had a very easy call.

Pierre Calamusa: {10-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}
Daniel Strelitz: {A-Diamonds}{6-Spades}

The {8-Spades} turn and {7-Hearts} river completed the board to end Calamusa's tournament in 25th place ($44,060). The 24 remaining players will redraw for the final three tables.

Strelitz Doubles Through Gofman

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Daniel Strelitz
Daniel Strelitz

After an open raise, Aleksandr Gofman on the button three-bet to 100,000 and Daniel Strelitz in the small blind four-bet to 275,000. The initial raiser folded and Gofman called to see a flop of {6-Clubs}{6-Spades}{2-Diamonds}. Strelitz continued right away for 150,000 and Gofman called.

On the {6-Hearts} turn, Strelitz fired a second barrel of 225,000 and Gofman tossed in calling chips to see the {Q-Hearts} on the river. Strelitz moved all in and Gofman asked for a call. The shove was for 621,000 total and Gofman tossed in a single chip for the call.

As soon as Strelitz turned over his {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}, Gofman mucked his cards in disgust. They were revealed as the {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} for the inferior full house and Gofman lost a big portion of his stack.
