Je Ho Lee Takes Down 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau for HK$1.6M

Level 28 : 250,000/500,000, 75,000 ante
2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau champion Je Ho Lee
2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau champion Je Ho Lee

It took a lot of poker, played out over five starting legs in four different countries to whittle the 928-strong 2017 Suncity Cup field to the final eight, and it took a further three 60-minute levels to bring play down to the final two.

The final two players in question were Korea’s Je Ho Lee and Hong Kong’s Sparrow Cheung, who cut an deal when play reached heads-up. The pair decided on an Independent Chip Model chop that saw Lee guaranteed a payday of HK$1,605,472 and Cheung HK$1,445,528, with the two playing it out for the all-important title and trophy.

The two also decided to speed up the action and reduce the level length down for 60-minutes to 20-minutes and the heads-up battle between the pair was an epic affair. The chip lead changed hands on four separate occasions and both players came within a whisker of busting before hitting the perfect card to survive.

Eventually something had to give and the end came not long after Lee had pulled back in front. The final hand saw Lee limp the button and Cheung check from the big blind and all the chips went in on a queen-high double club flop.

Cheung was the man to pull the trigger first with a jack-high flush draw, but found himself trailing to Lee’s king-high flush draw and blanks on the turn and river saw the Korean player win his first major title and take down his largest-ever career score taking home ~$205,528.

While Cheung will be disappointed not to have been able to close out the win, the Hong Kong poker professional has ended the best year of his poker-playing career on a high.

This was Cheung’s 34th final table appearance of 2017 and he already held the number one spot for most 2017 cashes worldwide with a massive 62 in the money finishes. This runner-up finish makes that 63 and brings his career tournament earnings up to over $1.2M.

The day began with eight players, but this became six after a single level, with the final tables two Japanese players becoming the first two casualties.

It was Suncity Cup Taipei frontrunner Sahashi Hideki who was the first to fall. Hideki came in as the shortest stack and could not find that all-elusive double-up, getting his last ten big blinds in with queen-jack suited over the top of a Danny Tang open. The Hong Kong player made the call with ace-ten suited, and despite Hideki flopping a flush draw, blanks on the turn and river saw him hit the rail in eighth place.

This made Kosei Ichinose the short-stack and the poker pro departed toward the end of the first full level played after moving all-in pre-flop for his last seven big blinds with king-queen suited. It was Tang playing hitman once again, making the call from the blinds with pocket sixes, which held to bring the final table down to six.

This opened the floodgate for a slew of speedy eliminations, with Chien Jenyen and Eugene Co departing in a single 60-minute level and Lim Chin Wei taking a big hit at the hands of Sparrow Cheung.

It was Cheung’s turn to play executioner in the Jenyen bust-out, opening the action with a mid-position raise and then calling the Taiwanese player’s all-in shove. While Jenyen got the last of his chips in with pocket tens, these could not beat Cheung’s pocket queens and the field was down to five.

Five quickly became four with Lee earning himself a double-up at Eugene Co’s expense in a blind versus blind battle, before finishing the job an orbit later. Co moved the last of his chips in from under-the-gun with ace-five and Lee woke up in the big blind with pocket kings to bring the field down to four.

This did not conclude the carnage though, that honor again went to Sparrow Cheung though it was Lim Chin Wei who lit the fuse on a hand that would sizzle slowly before culminating in an explosion of action.

The Malaysian player opened the action and picked up two callers before Cheung squeezed big from the blinds and all the chips went in with Wei’s pocket tens up against Cheung’s pocket queens in a hand eerily similar to Jenyen’s exit hand.

Wei was left short and departed shortly after the break, getting the last of it in with queen-ten suited and running into Lee’s dominating ace-ten to bring the final table down to three.

Danny Tang became the third place finisher around 40-minutes later, getting the last of his chips in from the blinds with pocket twos over the top of a Lee button raise. The Korean made the call with ace-six and paired his six to send Tang packing and take play heads-up.

That concludes the PokerNews live reporting for the 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau. The event showcased some great poker and we hope you enjoyed reading about it as much as we enjoyed writing about it.

Sparrow Cheung Eliminated in 2nd Place (HK$1,445,528)

Level 28 : 250,000/500,000, 75,000 ante
Sparrow Cheung played a great game
Sparrow Cheung played a great game

The epic heads-up battle has come to a close and the 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau now has a new champion in the form of Korea’s Je Ho Lee.

The hand that settled things once and for all started off innocuously enough with Lee limping the button and Cheung checking his option in the blinds and the flop came down {q-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}. This is when all the fireworks happened with Cheung moving all-in and Lee making a quick call.

Sparrow Cheung: {j-Clubs}{3-Clubs}
Je Ho Lee: {k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

Cheung was the at-risk player with a dominated flush draw, though we have seen the Hong Kong player stage sicker comebacks than this. The watching rail crowded around calling for a jack or a three and Cheung waited with baited breath as his fate was decided.

The {6-Spades} saw Lee maintain his lead and the {a-Diamonds} sealed the deal. That was an epic heads-up battle and one where both players gave it their all. Sadly for Cheung he finished on the wrong side of it today, but the Hong Kong player has had the best year of his professional career and can be proud of the effort he has put in today.

Cheung shook Je Ho Lee’s hand and the Korean was clearly pleased as punch at taking down his first major title. That was some great poker and was a pleasure to watch. We hope you enjoyed reading about it as much as we enjoyed writing about it. Full end of day wrap to follow shortly.

Danny Tang Eliminated in 3rd Place (HK$642,900)

Level 22 : 60,000/120,000, 20,000 ante
Danny Tang
Danny Tang

As the shortest stack Danny Tang would need a double to bring himself back into contention so when Je Ho Lee opened the action with a raise to 300,000 from the button Tang decided to make a stand and moved all-in for his last 2.65 million from the small blind. Lee called quickly and the cards were turned over.

Danny Tang: {2-Clubs}{2-Hearts}
Je Ho Lee: {a-Spades}{6-Clubs}

It was a race, and it was one Lee took the lead in on the monochrome {6-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{j-Hearts} flop, though Tang was still drawing live with 11 outs and any heart or deuce would see him double. Tang’s watching rail pressed close calling for a heart but the {7-Spades} turn was of no help and neither was the {k-Spades} river. Tang shook Lee and Cheung’s hands and headed off to collect the equivalent of $82,300 and Lee stacked up to 13,250,000 to Cheung’s 8,830,000.

The two remaining players are once again crunching the numbers and talking deals.

Lim Chin Wei finishes in 4th place
Lim Chin Wei finishes in 4th place

Play had not long resumed after the break before the now short-stacked Lim Chin Wei moved the last of his chips in pre-flop from the button and was looked up by Je Ho Lee in the big blind.

Lim Chin Wei: {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Je Ho Lee: {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Things really have not gone Wei’s way today and you could not help but feel bad for the Malaysian after that last queens versus tens hand.

Things did not improve for Wei in this hand either with the {10-Spades}{k-Spades}{k-Hearts}{4-Spades}{9-Hearts} runout bringing his final table to a close.

Wei headed for the rail for the equivalent of a ~$63,239 payday while Lee stacked up to 10.1 million. The clock has now been paused while the three remaining Main Event players discuss the possibility of a deal.

Cheung Puts Big Hit on Wei

Level 21 : 50,000/100,000, 15,000 ante
Sparrow Cheung took down a massive pot
Sparrow Cheung took down a massive pot

An absolutely huge hand has recently gone down at the final table that ate into 5-minutes of the end of level break, and it was a doozy.

It was Lim Chin Wei who lit the fuse on a hand that would sizzle slowly before culminating in an explosion of action. Wei made it 250,000 to go from under-the-gun and Je Ho Lee called from the button. Danny Tang called from the small blind and then Sparrow Cheung squeezed to 1 million in the big blind.

Wei moved all in for 4.35 million and Lee looked pained by the decision and tanked for several minutes before folding (we’ll tell you what he had below) and Tang got out of the way. Cheung however, could not get his chips over the line fast enough.

Sparrow Cheung: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Lim Chin Wei: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

That’s the second time Cheung has woken up with pocket queens when an opponent has pocket tens and the {k-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds} run out saw Cheung win the monster pot, while Wei was left with just 6.5 big blinds. Je Ho Lee told the table he folded pocket jacks after the dust had settled.

Eugene Co Eliminated in 5th Place (HK$421,400)

Level 21 : 50,000/100,000, 15,000 ante
Eugene Co enjoyed a deep run, but his final table is now over
Eugene Co enjoyed a deep run, but his final table is now over

Danny Tang surprised Sparrow Cheung after limping the small blind with {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs} but Cheung did not get out of line so the pot was a small one. However, the hand that followed was definitely not a small one and it saw Eugene Co’s time at the final table come to a close.

Down to 1.8 million Co moved all-in from under-the-gun and the action folded around to Sparrow Cheung on the button who asked for a count. Cheung looked sorely tempted but then eyed up the big stack of Je Ho Lee, who was sitting in the big blind, and decided to let it go.

It was as well that he did and after Lim Chin Wei folded out the small blind, Lee called instantly and Co found himself in a great deal of trouble.

Eugene Co: {a-Clubs}{5-Spades}
Je Ho Lee: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}

Just like a lot of the hands yesterday Lee is catching cards at the perfect time and Cheung definitely dodged a bullet there and told us he folded ace-jack.

The {5-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} flop left Co needing to hit running fives to stay alive and the likelihood of that was a slim one. The {8-Hearts} turn left the Filipino drawing dead and he got to his feet, shook everyone’s hand and prepared to exit the tournament area. The {j-Spades} completed the hand and Co’s tournament and he headed off to collect the equivalent of $53,945.

That pot gives Lee a commanding lead and the Korean is now sitting on a stack in excess of 10 million in chips.

Chien Jenyen Eliminated in 6th Place (HK$348,700)

Chien Jenyen
Chien Jenyen

The action is coming to the boil on the 2017 Suncity Cup final table and there has been a third elimination with Taiwan’s Chien Jenyen the latest player to fall. Jenyen went out swinging, moving all-in for close to 2.5 million from the button over the top of a Sparrow Cheung middle position open. Cheung called immediately and the cards were turned over.

Sparrow Cheung: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Chien Jenyen: {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}

It’s a little unlucky to run a decent sized pocket pair into a bigger one when play is short-handed and Jenyen was the at-risk player, though should Cheung lose he would not be left with all that many chips. As it was the board ran out {9-Spades}{2-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{k-Clubs} to give Cheung close to a double-up, which he celebrated with a fist bump with neighbor Danny Tang, while Jenyen headed for the cage to collect the equivalent of $44,640.

Kosei Ichinose Eliminated in 7th Place (HK$261,500)

Level 20 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
Kosei Ichinose
Kosei Ichinose

The Final Table has gone from two Japanese players to none, with Kosei Ichinose hitting the rail and it was Hong Kong’s Danny Tang who was the man to send him there.

Down to hs last 575,000 in chips Ichinose moved these all-in from early position with {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs} and the action folded around to Tang in the big blind. With chips to spare and a pocket pair – {6-Clubs}{6-Spades} – Tang made a swift call and Ichinose’s fate was in the hands of the poker gods.

Unfortunately, they were not feeling generous and the {j-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{2-Hearts} runout saw the field reduced to the final six. Tang stacked up to 6.2 million while Ichinose headed for the cash desk to collect the equivalent of ~$33,476.

Sahashi Hideki Eliminated in 8th (HK$174,400)

Japan's Sahashi Hideki
Japan's Sahashi Hideki

The first casualty of the 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau Final Table was the shortest stack and despite coming into the day with a little over 22 big blinds Japan’s Sahashi Hideki could not find the cards for that all elusive double up.

Down to his last 10 big blinds, Hideki moved all-in from the button over the top of a Danny Tang cutoff open and the Hong Kong player made a quick call.

Sahashi Hideki: {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Danny Tang: {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

Hideki was the at-risk player and Tang’s ace-high was leading, though the Japanese player’s cards were live. The {10-}{3-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} flop was exactly the sort of board that Hideki was after, but unfortunately the {6-} turn and {5-} river were not the diamonds (or jack or queen) that he need to survive and he exited in 8th place for an HK$174,400 (~$22,325) payday while Tang stacked up to 5.4 million in chips.

The 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau Final Table is Here

(l-r) Lim Chin Wei, Chien Jenyen, Je Ho Lee, Eugene Co, Danny Tang, Sahashi Hideki, Sparrow Cheung, Kosei Ichinose
(l-r) Lim Chin Wei, Chien Jenyen, Je Ho Lee, Eugene Co, Danny Tang, Sahashi Hideki, Sparrow Cheung, Kosei Ichinose

It’s final table time at the 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau and it has taken a lot of poker, played out over five starting legs in four different countries to whittle the 928-strong field to the final eight.

All eight players are guaranteed a payday of at least HK$174,400 (~$22,325) but it is the HK$HK$1,925,000 first prize that all will have their eye on and the man best positioned to take that down is Lim Chin Wei, who is coming back with the chip lead and a stack of 5,500,000 – 91 big blinds.

The Malaysian player dominated a great deal of the Day 3 action, waking up with pocket Kings to bust Poland’s Karol Janiszewski at the start of the play to seize the chip lead before dropping down the pecking order.

However, a last-gasp burst of form saw Wei set up the unofficial ten-handed final, with pocket kings once again helping Wei in his climb to the top of the leaderboard, eliminating China’s Yuefeng Pan shortly before the end of play. Wei is in the hunt for his first major title and a fifth-place finish or higher will see the Malaysian cash for a career best.

It won’t be easy though as the last eight still has plenty of talent remaining. Danny Tang is sitting second in chips with a stack of 5,215,000 (86 big blinds) and with over US$757,061 in career tournament earnings victory here will see him reach and breach the $1 million mark and the Hong Kong player has the stack, and the skills to go the distance

Korea’s Je Ho Lee will also fancy his chances, and held the chip lead for a great deal of Day 3 before an ill-timed bluff against fellow final tablist Chien Jenyen when play was two tables out saw Lee drop back down into the pack. Lee is returning as the third largest stack with 2,430,000 in chips.

Another player who is no stranger to making the final table is Hong Kong Poker Player Association president Sparrow Cheung, who is making his 34th final table appearance of 2017. Cheung has cashed an impressive 62 times (63 including this event) in 2017 and currently holds the number one spot for most 2017 cashes worldwide.

While Kosei Ichinose may be nursing one of the shorter stacks, the Japanese poker professional cannot be counted out and already has two high roller titles under his belt, as well as over US$527,799 in career tournament earnings.

The final table’s other Japanese player, Sahashi Hideki, has also impressed this series. Hideki came in to the event with the overall chiplead with a stack of 374,200 after crushing the Suncity Cup Taipei leg and has remained one of the larger stacks all series. It’s not often that the man who holds the early chip lead goes the distance, but Hideki has showcased all the necessary skills to take this event down. In short, there is still some scintillating poker to be played and here’s how the final table is stacking up:
