Day 4 Started
It’s final table time at the 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau and it has taken a lot of poker, played out over five starting legs in four different countries to whittle the 928-strong field to the final eight.
All eight players are guaranteed a payday of at least HK$174,400 (~$22,325) but it is the HK$HK$1,925,000 first prize that all will have their eye on and the man best positioned to take that down is Lim Chin Wei, who is coming back with the chip lead and a stack of 5,500,000 – 91 big blinds.
The Malaysian player dominated a great deal of the Day 3 action, waking up with pocket Kings to bust Poland’s Karol Janiszewski at the start of the play to seize the chip lead before dropping down the pecking order.
However, a last-gasp burst of form saw Wei set up the unofficial ten-handed final, with pocket kings once again helping Wei in his climb to the top of the leaderboard, eliminating China’s Yuefeng Pan shortly before the end of play. Wei is in the hunt for his first major title and a fifth-place finish or higher will see the Malaysian cash for a career best.
It won’t be easy though as the last eight still has plenty of talent remaining. Danny Tang is sitting second in chips with a stack of 5,215,000 (86 big blinds) and with over US$757,061 in career tournament earnings victory here will see him reach and breach the $1 million mark and the Hong Kong player has the stack, and the skills to go the distance
Korea’s Je Ho Lee will also fancy his chances, and held the chip lead for a great deal of Day 3 before an ill-timed bluff against fellow final tablist Chien Jenyen when play was two tables out saw Lee drop back down into the pack. Lee is returning as the third largest stack with 2,430,000 in chips.
Another player who is no stranger to making the final table is Hong Kong Poker Player Association president Sparrow Cheung, who is making his 34th final table appearance of 2017. Cheung has cashed an impressive 62 times (63 including this event) in 2017 and currently holds the number one spot for most 2017 cashes worldwide.
While Kosei Ichinose may be nursing one of the shorter stacks, the Japanese poker professional cannot be counted out and already has two high roller titles under his belt, as well as over US$527,799 in career tournament earnings.
The final table’s other Japanese player, Sahashi Hideki, has also impressed this series. Hideki came in to the event with the overall chiplead with a stack of 374,200 after crushing the Suncity Cup Taipei leg and has remained one of the larger stacks all series. It’s not often that the man who holds the early chip lead goes the distance, but Hideki has showcased all the necessary skills to take this event down. In short, there is still some scintillating poker to be played and here’s how the final table is stacking up:

The first casualty of the 2017 Suncity Cup Finale Macau Final Table was the shortest stack and despite coming into the day with a little over 22 big blinds Japan’s Sahashi Hideki could not find the cards for that all elusive double up.
Down to his last 10 big blinds, Hideki moved all-in from the button over the top of a Danny Tang cutoff open and the Hong Kong player made a quick call.
Sahashi Hideki:
Danny Tang:
Hideki was the at-risk player and Tang’s ace-high was leading, though the Japanese player’s cards were live. The flop was exactly the sort of board that Hideki was after, but unfortunately the turn and river were not the diamonds (or jack or queen) that he need to survive and he exited in 8th place for an HK$174,400 (~$22,325) payday while Tang stacked up to 5.4 million in chips.
Player | Chips | Progress |
---|---|---|
Danny Tang | 54,000,000 | 48,785,000 |
Sahashi Hideki | Busted |
With the elimination of Sahashi Hideki, Hong Kong’s Danny Tang is the biggest stack with 5.7 million, though Lim Chin Wei is not all that far behind with 5 million.
Tang is now starting to target some of the shorter stacks and we caught him in action against the final tables’ now shortest stack Kosei Ichinose. We picked up the action on a flop of with over 400,000 already in the pot just as Ichinose checked the action over to Tang, who leveraged his huge stack to apply the pressure with a bet of 160,000. After some time spent thinking things over Ichinose slid in the call and the turn came in.
This was the last card of the hand though, as once Ichinose checked the action over to Tang he fired for 315,000, which represented more than 50 percent of the Japanese pro’s remaining chips and Ichinose reluctantly let it go.
Here’s how the final seven are stacking up:
Player | Chips | Progress |
---|---|---|
Danny Tang | 5,700,000 | -48,300,000 |
Lim Chin Wei | 5,000,000 | -500,000 |
Eugene Co | 3,350,000 | 1,050,000 |
Chien Jenyen | 2,100,000 | -90,000 |
Je Ho Lee | 1,800,000 | -630,000 |
Sparrow Cheung | 1,700,000 | 335,000 |
Kosei Ichinose | 600,000 | -1,235,000 |
Two interesting back-to-back hands have recently played out on the 2017 Suncity Cup Macau Final Table. The first was decided pre-flop and was just the appetizer to the juicy action that followed.
It was Lim Chin Wei who was the aggressor, making it 200,000 to go from the button and Chien Jenyen quickly moved all-in from the small blind. This was enough to get big blind Je Ho Lee to get out of the way quickly but Wei now had a decision on his hands.
The Taiwanese player’s shove was for 2.34 million so represented close to 40 percent of Wei’s stack and the Malaysian eventually elected to wait for a better spot, leaving Jenyen free to rake in 320,000 in blinds and antes.
There were fireworks the very next hand with action folding around to Je Ho Lee in the small blind, who open-shoved for close to 1.8 million and was called extremely quickly by big blind Eugene Co and the hands were turned over.
Je Ho Lee:
Eugene Co:
Lee was the at-risk player but had the best hand and the runout saw the Korean double to a little over 3.6 million while Co took a hit and dropped down to around 1.75 million.
Player | Chips | Progress |
---|---|---|
Lim Chin Wei | 4,800,000 | -200,000 |
Je Ho Lee | 3,600,000 | 1,800,000 |
Chien Jenyen | 2,660,000 | 560,000 |
Eugene Co | 1,750,000 | -1,600,000 |
The Final Table has gone from two Japanese players to none, with Kosei Ichinose hitting the rail and it was Hong Kong’s Danny Tang who was the man to send him there.
Down to hs last 575,000 in chips Ichinose moved these all-in from early position with and the action folded around to Tang in the big blind. With chips to spare and a pocket pair – – Tang made a swift call and Ichinose’s fate was in the hands of the poker gods.
Unfortunately, they were not feeling generous and the runout saw the field reduced to the final six. Tang stacked up to 6.2 million while Ichinose headed for the cash desk to collect the equivalent of ~$33,476.
Player | Chips | Progress |
---|---|---|
Danny Tang | 6,200,000 | 500,000 |
Kosei Ichinose | Busted |

The action is coming to the boil on the 2017 Suncity Cup final table and there has been a third elimination with Taiwan’s Chien Jenyen the latest player to fall. Jenyen went out swinging, moving all-in for close to 2.5 million from the button over the top of a Sparrow Cheung middle position open. Cheung called immediately and the cards were turned over.
Sparrow Cheung:
Chien Jenyen:
It’s a little unlucky to run a decent sized pocket pair into a bigger one when play is short-handed and Jenyen was the at-risk player, though should Cheung lose he would not be left with all that many chips. As it was the board ran out to give Cheung close to a double-up, which he celebrated with a fist bump with neighbor Danny Tang, while Jenyen headed for the cage to collect the equivalent of $44,640.
Player | Chips | Progress |
---|---|---|
Sparrow Cheung | 4,500,000 | 2,800,000 |
Chien Jenyen | Busted |
The five remaining final tablists are on a short unscheduled 10-minute break. Je Ho Lee and Lim Chin Wei tangled in a big hand that saw the Korean edge into the lead shortly before the break and here's how the tournament landscape is shaping up.
Player | Chips | Progress |
---|---|---|
Je Ho Lee | 7,600,000 | -28,400,000 |
Danny Tang | 5,800,000 | -400,000 |
Sparrow Cheung | 4,200,000 | -300,000 |
Lim Chin Wei | 2,500,000 | -2,300,000 |
Eugene Co | 1,900,000 | 150,000 |
