Daniel Negreanu Bets Big on Himself for the Poker Masters

Daniel Negreanu was the first player of the Poker Masters to visit the payout desk after he finished in eighth place in Event #1 early Thursday morning for $102,000. It might not have been the finish he hoped for, but it also means he’s the first player on the leader board for the Poker Masters Purple Jacket™.

Zach Hyman opened to 3,500 in the cutoff and Sean Winter called on the button, as did Jake Schindler in the big blind.

The flop of {A-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} was checked through by all three players as the turn landed the {10-Clubs}.

Schindler checked, Hyman bet 4,500, and Winter folded.

Schindler check-raised to 20,000, and Hyman folded.

Marchese Builds on His Lead

Tom Marchese went into the break as the chip leader and he is showing no signs of slowing down. On a board reading {q-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{4-Spades}{9-Diamonds} Dominik Nitsche checked from the big blind and Tom Marchese bet 36,000. Nitsche called and saw the 3h peel on the river.

Nitsche used two of his time extensions before leading out for 60,000. Marchese didn't waste any time before shoving all-in. Nitsche chuckled to himself before tossing his cards to the muck.

Sontheimer Gives Up on the Turn

Dan Shak opened with a raise to 4,000 from under the gun and Steffen Sontheimer called from the hijack. Dan Smith re-raised to 15,000 on the button. Shak folded and Sontheimer called. The flop was {a-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} and Sontheimer checked to Smith who bet 11,000. Sontheimer chose to check-raise to 27,000 and Smith called.

The turn was the {k-Hearts} and Sontheimer checked again. Smith fired 37,000 and Sontheimer quickly mucked his hand.
