Fedor Holz Leads Poker Masters $100K NLHE, Steffen Sontheimer Makes Fourth Final Table of Series

Level 15 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Fedor Holz
Fedor Holz

The Poker Masters Event #5: $100,000 NLHE drew 36 players, which created a prize pool of $3.6 million. That means the remaining six players will get paid a minimum $180,000, while the winner will walk away with $1,512,000.

Leading the pack is Fedor Holz, who bagged up 1,471,000. Others sitting with healthy chip stacks are his fellow Germans Christian Christner (1,367,000) and Steffen "Goose" Sontheimer (1,354,000).

In regards to Sontheimer, he currently leads the Poker Masters with $1,221,000 in earnings after making three final tables this week, which included winning Event #2. If he finishes in second place, he’ll lock up The Poker Masters Purple Jacket™ as the likes of Holz, who finished runner-up to him for $550,000, and Schillhabel, who has $306,000 in earnings wouldn’t be able to overtake him.

Rounding out the final table are Stefan Schillhabel (1,218,000), Justin Bonomo (1,050,000), and Seth Davies (740,000).

Day 2 saw 15 players return to action, with Byron Kaverman jumping into action at the start of Level 10. Early on, Dan Shak ran jacks into the kings of Christner to bust first, and he was followed out the door by Dan Smith, who shoved with a pair and flush draw and failed to get there against Sontheimer’s two pair.

Less than 10 minutes later, the extremely short-stacked Phil Hellmuth took his leave when his ace-six failed to hold against the queen-jack of Brian Rast. Kaverman was the next to go after losing with pocket queens to Holz’s aces, and then fan favorite Daniel Negreanu bowed out in 11th place when his ace-ten was bested by the king-queen of Christner.

Kid Poker had high hopes of capturing The Poker Masters Purple Jacket™, even betting more than 20 players $50,000 in a must-win bet. That meant had he won, he would’ve collected more than $1 million in side action, but now if one of those he bet against takes it down, he’ll have to pay them $50K. If either Davies or Bonomo win, it’ll be a wash as neither of them accepted the bet.

The elimination of Ben Tollerene in tenth place saw the remaining nine players combine down to a single table. After a couple hours of play there, Rast, who began Day 2 as the chip leader, busted when his pocket queens failed to hold against Bonomo’s Big Slick.

Jake Schindler exited after failing to win a flip, and Stephen Chidwick busted as bubble boy in seventh place when he got his short stack all in with jack-nine only to run it into the queen-jack of Sontheimer. Chidwick failed to get lucky and his elimination put an end to Day 2.

Day 3 of the Poker Masters Event #5: $100,000 NLHE will get underway at 2 p.m. local time. We’ll once again be bringing you all the action and eliminations straight from the tournament floor, so be sure to join us then.

What Each Player Needs to Win The Poker Masters Purple Jacket

Level 15 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante

The Poker Masters Purple Jacket race has been a hot topic over the past few weeks with everyone arguing that either the system is fine or a points system would have been much fairer. However, for this inaugural Poker Masters, the winner of the Purple Jacket will be whoever has accrued the most tournament winnings over the five events.

Germany's Steffen Sontheimer played all five events, collected three in-the-money finishes, and won one event to sit at $1,221,000 in winnings heading into Day 3. With $1,512,000 up for grabs for whoever can win on Wednesday, all six players still have a chance at capturing the Poker Masters Purple Jacket if a specific set of outcomes are reached.

518Christian ChristnerGermany 15$175,000

Unfortunately for five of the players, the not only need to win this event, but they also rely on where Sontheimer finishes. However, for Sontheimer, he can finish as low as 4th place and still be crowned the inaugural Poker Masters Purple Jacket winner.

From the above table, Seth Davies will need to win Event #5 and see Sontheimer finish no better then in 5th place.

Both Christian Christner and Justin Bonomo will also need to win Event #5 and see Sontheimer finish no better then in 4th place.

Stefan Schillhabel and Fedor Holz have a little more breathing room that allows Sontheimer to finish in 3rd place if they manage to claim victory.

For Sontheimer, finishing in 1st or 2nd secures him the Poker Masters Purple Jacket with a side note being that if Holz wins, and Sontheimer finishes 2nd, Sontheimer will have just $2,300 more in total winnings. If Sontheimer finishes in 3rd place, he needs Holz and Schillhabel to finish no better then 2nd place, while if he finishes in 4th place, he needs Holz, Schillhabel, Bonomo, and Christner to finish no better then 2nd place.

Tomorrow is going to be an exciting day!

Stephen Chidwick Eliminated in 7th Place; Bubbles Poker Masters $100k

Level 15 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

From the small blind, Steffen Sontheimer moved all in and Stephen Chidwick called all in from the big blind for his last 151,000.

Chidwick: {J-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Sontheimer: {Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts}

Chidwick was dominated in this blind-on-battle, and when the dealer spread a {K-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} flop his outs went from a jack to a queen so he could fill his straight.

The turn landed the {8-Diamonds} to open up four more outs for Chidwick now needing a seven to go along with a queen.

Unfortunately for the one-time chip leader, the river landed the {A-Hearts}, and it would be Sontheimer rivering the nut straight to send Chidwick out the door in 7th place as the Poker Masters Event #5: $100,000 No-Limit Hold'em bubble boy.

Jake Schindler Eliminated in 8th Place

Level 15 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Jake Schindler
Jake Schindler

The action folded to Jake Schindler on the button, and he raised to 60,000. Stefan Schillhabel was in the small blind, and he three-bet to 150,000. Schindler committed his final 141,000, and the cards were tabled.

Schindler: {A-Spades}{7-Clubs}
Schillhabel: {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}

With Schindler at-risk and trailing, the {3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{6-Spades} flop changed little before the {6-Clubs} on the turn would see him needing to catch an ace or seven to stay alive, or a three to chop.

The river landed the {K-Hearts} and Schindler was eliminated in 8th place to leave the remaining players on the Poker Masters Event #5 bubble.

Brian Rast Eliminated in 9th Place

Brian Rast

Justin Bonomo raised to 26,000 from middle position with {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds} and Brian Rast was next to act and put in a three-bet to 76,000 with {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}. The action was folded back to Bonomo who shoved all-in and Rast called, being the player at risk.

The flop came {k-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} and Bonomo hit a king to out-flop Rast. The {k-Hearts} on the turn gave Bonomo trip kings and the {5-Hearts} on the river sealed Rast's fate. He was eliminated in 9th position and his shot at The Poker Masters was finished.

Chidwick Flops the World, But Christner Goes Runner Runner to Double into Chip Lead

Level 14 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Christian Christner
Christian Christner

Christian Christner opened to 22,000 holding {A-Clubs}{8-Clubs} from early position and Steffen Sontheimer called on the button holding {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}. Stephen Chidwick called in the small blind holding {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts} and the dealer spread a {5-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop.

Chidwick checked the nuts, as Christner checked also. Sontheimer bet 29,000 with his pair and straight draw and Chidwick check-raised to 110,000.

Christner called, and Sontheimer folded as the turn landed the {3-Clubs} and Chidwick used a time extension button before moving all in. Christner had 568,000 in his chip stack, and he went into the tank and used his own time extension button before being forced to use a second before eventually calling all-in.

With Christner needing a nine to chop, or a club to stay alive, the dealer would deliver the devastating {K-Clubs} on the river to ensure Christner the double up into the chip lead with nearly 1.5 million in chips as Chidwick plummets down to 307,000 after suffering that bad beat after flopping the nuts.

Ben Tollerene Eliminated in 10th Place

Level 13 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Ben Tollerene
Ben Tollerene

Stefan Schillhabel raised to 24,000 on the button with {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs} and Ben Tollerene made a three-bet to 75,000 out of the small blind with {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}. Schillhabel made the call and the two players saw a flop of {a-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}.

Tollerene led out for 50,000 and Schillhabel just called with his top pair and a flush draw. The turn was the {9-Hearts} improving Schillhabel's hand to two pair. Tollerene checked and Schillhabel bet 175,000 which was enough to cover Tollerene's stack. Tollerene made the call and the cards were tabled.

Tollerene would need to catch a queen or jack that wasn't a club but the {k-Diamonds} peeled off on the river and Tollerene's hopes at The Poker Masters Purple Jacket came to an end.

Flush for Rast, Straight for Bonomo

Level 13 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Brian Rast
Brian Rast

Justin Bonomo opened the button to 16,000 and Brian Rast called in the big blind as the flop landed {5-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{A-Diamonds} and Rast checked.

Bonomo bet out 32,000 and Rast called before checking the {J-Diamonds} on the turn. Bonomo fired out again; this time for 70,000, and Rast made the call as the river landed the {7-Hearts}.

Rast checked and Bonomo pushed out a stack of 25,000-denomination chips amounting to a bet of 500,000.

Rast called for his final 242,000 and tabled his {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a flush as Bonomo revealed his {Q-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for a Broadway straight. Rast is now sitting on 732,000 as Bonomo dropped to 450,000 in chips.

Chidwick Strikes Turn to Double

Level 13 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

Jake Schindler opened to 20,000 from under the gun and Stephen Chidwick three-bet to 55,000 from the button. The action returned to Schindler, and he moved all in for nearly 550,000 and Chidwick called all in for 303,000.

Chidwick: {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}
Schindler: {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}

With Chidwick at-risk and needing to improve, the {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} flop changed little, but it would be the {A-Diamonds} on the turn that would thrust him into the lead.

The river landed the {5-Diamonds} and Chidwick doubled through to 626,000 as Schindler dropped to 242,000 in chips.

Daniel Negreanu Eliminated in 11th Place

Level 13 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Christian Christner raised to 18,000 from the button with {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} and Daniel Negreanu shipped all-in for 189,000 with {a-Hearts}{10-Spades} in the big blind. Christner made the call and the cards were face up.

"Ace-seven-three rainbow," Negreanu was cheering for. However, the flop came {q-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Spades} and Christner flopped a pair of queens. The turn was the {6-Clubs} and the river brought the {5-Diamonds} as Negreanu was sent packing prior to the final table.

With Negreanu's elimination, his Poker Masters journey comes to an end and so does the chance of winning over $1,000,000 in side bets. Negreanu had side bets with 23 other players to win The Poker Masters Purple Jacket for $50,000 a piece and will still be on the hook for one of those bets should Justin Bonomo, Seth Davies, or Stephen Chidwick not win the title.
