Dominic Picnic Leads After Day 1 of the PokerNews Cup at Borgata

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 400 ante

The first ever PokerNews Cup on American soil got underway at The Borgata yesterday. A total of 120 entries were made into the $2,000-buy-in event, resulting in a prize pool of $222,324. A total of 26 players remain after 16 levels in play, all still gunning for the $68,676-first place prize.

The event got saw an action packed start with Jarrett Blakeley and Scott Sissler allin pre-flop in the first level. Blakeley had aces and was up against the jacks of Sissler. The latter flopped a jack to get ahead, but the former found a straight on the turn and doubled up.

Action was fast and furious, undoubtedly motivated by the option for players to reenter if they busted before the 9th level had finished. Right before registration closed, a couple new players entered. Ryan Van Sanford, Tim West and Stan Jablonski were just a few of the players that got it last minute. After registration closed, action tightened up a bit.

John Dolan was one of the first players to bust without the option to give it another go again. The former November Niner got it in with aces against Dave Olshan who had turned a straight with eight-five. The ace on the river didn't help Dolan anymore and he got up and made his exit.

Alex Rocha, winner of the Venetian Deepstack 1 million guaranteed for $173,861 just last week, also went down with a big hand. He had ace-king with the ace of clubs on a paired board with four clubs. On top of all the cards out, Rocha and the other players had some extra information to work with as the dealer had accidentally exposed several cards dealing the turn. Rocha called with the best flush possible but turned out to be beaten by a full house.

Familiar names like Ben Keeline, Joey Weissman, Matt Stout, Jeremy Ausmus, Kevin Saul, Mukul Pahuja and Shannon Shorr all gave the PokerNews Cup a try but failed to survive to battle on Day 2.

A total of 26 players did make it through, with Dominic Picnic leading the charge. Picnic turned his 30,000-starting stack into a 323,500. His closest competitor is Jason Deutsch with 273,500 in chips. Jake Bazeley (235,000), Christian Harder (150,000), Ryan Van Sanford (116,000), Aaron Massey (78,500) and Mike Dentale (53,000) are some of the others to come back for Day 2. Play resumes at The Borgata at noon with level 17 (2,500/5,000, 500-ante). A total of 18 players will make it to the money.

Kevin Saul Calls to See a Bluff Card, Jack Duong Complies

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Jason Deutsch took a hit to his stack.

A pot north of 220,000 caught our attention between Jason Deutsch and Jack Duong. The board was {6-Spades}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, Duong was all in and Deutsch was in the tank.

After tanking Deutsch mucked his hand and Kevin Saul called for Duong to show the bluff.

"I want to see the {9-Hearts}," Saul said.

Duong turned one card face up - the {9-Hearts}.

"One Crack Deserves Another"

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Taylor Wilson
Taylor Wilson

Taylor Wilson and Muhammad Rahim just played a monster pot when the former limped in under the gun and the latter made a big raise out of the small blind. Wilson called a bet on the {3-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} flop and a {10-Clubs} hit the turn. Rahim shoved all in for about 105,000 effective into the bloated pot of over 75,000, and Wilson called fairly quickly.

Rahim showed {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}.

"One crack deserves another," Wilson said, turning over {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for two pair.

The dealer burned and turned the {j-Clubs}, and Wilson doubled through in a monster pot.

Alex Rocha Eliminated, Shows Table Bent Cards

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Alex Rocha
Alex Rocha

Alex Rocha opened from under the gun, Taylor Wilson and a third player called to see a flop of {J-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{8-Spades}. All three checked, the turn came {5-Clubs} and Wilson bet 3,200. The unknown player mucked and the dealer accidently exposed several cards in the muck reaching for the cards.

The dealer rushed to turn them back over and Rocha called out the cards. Rocha laughed, looked at Wilson and said, "I'm only calling because of the cards I saw."

The river came {6-Clubs}, the table was amused by Rocha's comment and Wilson checked. Rocha bet 11,000 - leaving about 10,000 behind - and Wilson put out a stack of 5,000 chips to set Rocha all in.

Rocha sat back, tanked for a short bit and slid his remaining chips forward. Wilson tabled {8-Hearts}{6-Hearts} for a full house and Rocha showed {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}.

"Good luck everyone, but the this ace is marked," and showed the table. "I had to put it underneath the other card because it was bent so bad."

The dealer called the floor and the deck was taken out of play.

Roland Israelashvili just got his last 18,000 or so in preflop with kings, but an opponent had him crushed with {a-}{a-}. No king hit the board, and Israelashvili hit the rail.

Speaking of kings, Mike Dentale just took a seat in the tournament.

"I went out with pocket kings, if anyone cares," Dentale announced of his WPT Main Event run. "Pocket eights. He didn't even hit an eight... made a straight."

The first day of action kicks off at 4 p.m., when players will be competing for a mountain of cash thanks to the $2,150 buy in and the ability for players to reenter while late registration is open (first 9 levels). Players start with 30,000 in chips. The first 12 levels will be 30-minutes long, after that the levels go to 40-minutes. Levels on the final table will last 50-minutes each.

Surviving players will return the tomorrow at 12 p.m. for Day 2, when an eventual winner will be crowned and history will be made.

A big turnout is expected for this event in no small part due to it taking place during the heart of the 2016 Borgata Poker Open. The poker festival, which has been running since Sept. 6, has been a huge success thus far by drawing in players from around the United States to Atlantic City, New Jersey, for tons of hot poker action and more.

Not Just Poker! Spas, Bars, Clubs, Restaurants and More!

If you've been to the Borgata, you already know why it is the top casino destination on the east coast. If you haven't been there, now is a perfect chance to do so. You can not only be part of history in our very first US-based PokerNews Cup, but also have a fabulous experience thanks to everything that the Borgata offers.

If you are heading to the Borgata for the PokerNews Cup, you are already expecting to play a ton of poker. Outside the tournament, there are other events running as part of the Borgata Poker Open and ring games running around the clock.

When off the felt, you can relax in your world-class hotel room or head to Spa Toccare, where you can enjoy a full spa treatment and swim in their luxurious indoor pool. You can even get a bit of exercise in the spa gym, appropriately called the Pump Room.

As if one spa isn't enough, you can head up to the 32nd floor to experience the two-story Immersion Spa, which offers tons of spa treatments, an indoor lap pool and a fitness center. Also, if the weather holds up, you can also enjoy the newly opened Borgata Outdoor Pool, which features over 300 lounges, daybeds and cabanas surrounding a 3,200-square-foot Roman-style pool.

Indoor pool at The Water Club

Of course this isn't to say everything about the Borgata outside of poker is about relaxation. Right next door to the Borgata Outdoor Pool is the Borgata Beer Garden, where you can enjoy over 15 different domestic and craft beers on tap.

While this bar is certainly recommended for beer lovers, there are plenty of other bars to choose from including Gypsy Bar, 28 West, B Bar, Long Bar, Boot N' Whip and Sunroom Lounge & Sunbar.

Let's not forget restaurants as there are no shortage of world-class places to eat including Bobby Flay Steak, Wolfgang Puck American Grille, Fornelletto, Izakaya and Old Homestead Steak House. Each of these great establishments hosts a bar as well, including wine bars at Fonelletoo and Old Homestead and a sake bar at Izakaya.

There are also many casual dining options which might prove to be better for your budget and could fit in better with any time constraints you may have.

If you are looking for something a bit more exciting than bars and restaurants, you can head to the popular Premier Nightclub and dance the night away. It also goes without saying, for a different kind of excitement, you can see if Lady Luck is on your side in casino games and slot machines on one of the largest casino floors in the world.
