It is time for the highly anticipated and much-ballyhooed Golden Nugget Grand Poker Series Event #55 2022 PokerNews Cup $1,100 to kick off at 11 a.m. local time on what will be the first of three starting days in this $1 Million Guarantee event.

The PokerNews Cup has a rich history, starting back in 2007 and was last run in 2019, won by Panagiotis Panagiotidis. This year’s field is expected to be the largest PokerNews Cup yet as it boasts the popular Golden Nugget as its host in downtown Las Vegas in the midst of a great summer of poker.

The $1 Million guarantee will be made up of $1,100 entries. Each entry will garner a stack of 30,000. Reentry is unlimited and will be open for all three starting days, even if a player bags they may opt to enter another flight and move the best bag forward if they happen to bag twice. Levels are 40 minutes and registration will be open until the start of Level 13 on each of the three starting days, meaning a max late registration will be about 8:45 p.m. local time on Sunday, June 26.

Each of the first three starting days will begin at 11 a.m. and will play down until 12.5% of the field is remaining. At that point, the players will bag and be officially in the money as they head to Day 2, which will be at 12 noon on Monday, June 27. There are 15-minute breaks after Level 3, Level 6, and Level 12, a 60-minute dinner break after Level 9, and a 10-minute break after Level 15 in the late night.

PokerNews will be there to report the action of the tournament as well as link some fun things and stories in what will be a fantastic event!

One of the biggest tournaments in the early goings of the 2022 Grand Poker Series was Event #10: $200 NLH $250,000 GTD, a tournament that attracted 1,482 entrants over five starting flights.

The top 122 finishers made the money on Day 2 and included Allison De Souza (112th - $400), Mariano Dirittorio (79th - $605), Daryl Oppelt (63rd - $715), David Atwood (31st - $1,030), Zachary Grandstaff (19th - $1,710), Anthony Regis (13th - $2,495), and final table bubble Shawn Carr (10th - $3,180).

Katie Kopp, fresh off winning the first gold bracelet of the 2022 World Series of Poker (WSOP), was at the final table but saw her run come to an end in third place for $17,885. That left Logan Moon of Boston, Massachusetts to do battle with Brandon Mulcrone of Las Vegas in heads-up play. The latter ultimately came out on top to claim the title and a $38,600 first-place prize.

Carlton Peake
Carlton Peake

In one of the first big pots of the day, action was picked up on the river as the board read {6-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}. Michael Liang made a bet and was promptly jammed on by Carlton Peake.

Liang took just a moment before he called. Peake showed the goods with the {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs} for quads. Liang stood up and showed his no good full house {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts} and he was busted early in the day.

Action was on the turn as the board read {8-Spades}{k-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{4-Hearts}. Erik Badgley bet and was raised all in by his opponent. Badgley called.

Badgley held the {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} for the lead with a pair of aces while his opponent had a pair of eights and a club draw with the {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}. The river was the {10-Hearts} to miss the clubs and secure a double for Badgley.

Smith Flops Wheel and Collects

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante
Jerod Smith
Jerod Smith

Action was picked up on the turn as the board read {a-Hearts}{2-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} with a pot of 21,300 in the middle. Jerod Smith had raised his opponent's cutoff bet of 8,500 to 35,000 from early position, which was enough to put his opponent all in if he called.

His opponent considered it for a long time. "I raised preflop so I have a big hand," said Smith while his opponent tanked. Eventually, his opponent landed on a decision to call.

Smith flipped over the {4-Spades}{3-Spades} flopped wheel which was well ahead of the {a-Clubs}{2-Clubs} two-pair of his opponent. The river did not fill up the two pair as the {7-Diamonds} came off and Smith grabbed all the chips of his now busted opponent.

Mixed games are quite popular at the Golden Nugget during the Grand Poker Series, and there’s a full offering on the schedule. Case in point was Event #23: $200 Night H.O.R.S.E. $5K GTD, a tournament that attracted 59 runners and offered up an $8,850 prize pool.

That was paid out to the final table of eight players with the final three opting to work a deal. Coming out on top and finishing as the winner of the tournament for $2,068 was Canada’s Calen “Big Wheel” McNeil.

McNeil, who learned to play poker online while in college, is perhaps best known in the poker world for topping a massive 1,014-player field to win the 2013 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Event #20: $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better for $277,274 and a gold bracelet.

Clearly mixed games are in the wheelhouse of “Big Wheel.”

Juan Gandara
Juan Gandara

Action came in on the river with a board that read {q-Spades}{k-Hearts}{5-Spades}{9-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}. From the hijack, Conran Simpson bet enough to put Juan Gandara all in.

Gandara went into the tank from middle position. After over a minute he called.

Simpson mucked his cards, but since it was an all in situation they were turned over {10-}{8-} and Gandara had the winner as his {a-}{k-} was briefly shown.

Smith Slays Aces With Quad Jacks

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Meghan Smith
Meghan Smith

In a preflop all in, Meghan Smith held {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds} and was in big trouble vs the {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades} of her opponent.

She stood up, prepared to head out but the flop sat her back down as it came {j-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}. The turn was overkill as the {j-Clubs} came off and the river was a meaningless {5-Clubs} to give Smith the double up.
