Late Sparrow Gets the Chips: Cheung Buys in Late but Spins Up a Big Stack

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Sparrow Cheung
Sparrow Cheung

Sparrow Cheung wasn't the early bird at all on Day 1a of PokerStars Festival Korea Main Event, but that didn't make much difference. After buying in just before registration closed, Cheung made the time he did spend in the Main Event count as he bagged 158,100 to rank second in chips.

Cheung was one of a handful of notables who entered after bagging in the High Roller event, which started a couple of hours earlier and played a shorter day. Pete Chen (41,900) and Alan Lau (38,600) also double-bagged.

Neither player is very far above the 30,000 starting stack, but it wasn't for lack of trying from Lau, who came in and pushed the action hard right away, running up to nearly 90,000. He was down to about half of the starting stack when he got pocket kings in and received a call from Stuart Brodie, holding ace-six. That double propelled him to bagging time.

Lau, Cheung and Chen are all atop the Asia Player of the Year leaderboard in that order.

The only player with more than Cheung is inexperienced Russian player Dmitrii Kovalevskii, who finished with a monstrous 201,000. Others bagging after the 12-level day included big stacks Yutaro Sukegawa (148,000), Martin Gonzales (146,700) and Roman Tsoyi (133,000), as well as Bryan Huang (90,200).

Overall Day 1a of the first PokerStars Festival Korea Main Event drew 54 runners and 17 of them survived. Jack Wu, Brodie and Xuefeng Huang were some of the players eliminated during the course of play.

Brodie looked like he'd be one of the stars of the day after running up a room-leading stack at the dinner break. However, a tough beat started a slide he was never able to stop, as he lost all in preflop in a five-bet pot with pocket aces against the pocket tens of Weihsun Lu.

The remaining players have a couple of days off now as three more starting flights to this event will play out over the next two days. Survivors return Sunday for Day 2, with coverage here on PokerNews continuing until and through that time.

Tsai and Rosen Find Doubles

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Jesse Rosen
Jesse Rosen

Duming Tsai shoved all in from the button for 10,700 after a player opened in middle position to 2,200, and the opener called.

Tsai: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Opponent: {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}

The {2-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} flop missed Tsai, as did the {8-Clubs}. The turn seemed to give the player with sevens confidence as he resumed sitting, but the {a-Diamonds} river gave Tsai a double.

At a neighboring table, Jesse Rosen had a far less sweaty double when he shoved from the big blind for 14,200 and a player who opened to 2,400 in middle position called.

Rosen: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}
Opponent: {a-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}

The {a-Spades}{4-Spades}{j-Hearts} flop ended things early, and the {8-Hearts} and {q-Clubs} finished out the board.

Sukegawa Waits for the Turn

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Yutaro Sukegawa
Yutaro Sukegawa

Andrei Li bet 3,100 from under the gun against two opponents on an {8-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{4-Spades} flop. Only Yutaro Sukegawa, in the cutoff, put in a call. On the {10-Clubs} turn, Li bet again, 5,300. Sukegawa moved all in to put Li at risk for 18,500. Li tanked a little over a minute and then dropped his stack in the middle.

Li: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Sukegawa: {j-Spades}{8-Spades}

Li needed help but could catch a queen, nine, four or ten. The river was a {6-Spades}, no help to Li's queens.

Utrobin Flops the Cooler

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Viktor Utrobin
Viktor Utrobin

A player in middle position bet an unknown amount with a T5,000 chip into a pot of about 4,500 after {q-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{k-Clubs} flopped, and Viktor Utrobin put in a check-raise to 8,000 from the big blind. The bettor put his 15,200 in, and Utrobin snap-called, tabling {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for the nuts. The other player showed he'd been coolered: {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for a lower straight. The turn was a {10-Spades} and the river a {3-Clubs}, giving Utrobin the knockout.

Huang in the House

Level 3 : 100/200, 25 ante
Bryan Huang, pictued at a different event.
Bryan Huang, pictued at a different event.

One player who recently took a seat in the event is Bryan Huang. Huang is one of the more accomplished players to establish himself in Asia in recent years, running up a ledger that includes nearly $1.2 million in live cashes.

He's also had considerable success here in Korea. In an APPT Main Event here in 2015, Huang made it to heads-up play, where he lost to Jason Mo for the title. Huang got nearly $90,000 for second place. He also recently made the final table of the Asia Championship of Poker Main Event, finishing sixth for a career-best $162,000.

We'll keep an eye on Huang to see if he can continue his success here.
