The 2017 PokerStars Festival Manila at the City of Dreams entertainment complex has come to an end with the first-ever PokerStars Festival Manila ₱55,000 (~$1,092) Main Event champion being crowned at the PokerStars LIVE poker room. After three starting days and the penultimate tournament day, only 14 players out of a 594-entry strong field remained. The largest international tournament in the history of the Philippines with a buy-in of PHP30,000 or more easily surpassed the ₱20 million (~$397,230) guarantee.

With the lion's share of the ₱28,809,000 prize pool (~$572,190) still up for grabs, all finalists had ₱285,000 (~$5,661) locked up for their efforts and Michael Falcon was leading the survivors. The 55 year-old Dane also made Day 2 of the PokerStars Cup as well and multi-tabled both tournaments at the same time, reaching both final tables in spectacular fashion. Falcon finished 6th in the Cup and was sent to the rail in 3rd place in the Main Event to cash for more than ₱2.6 million combined.

Uday Bansal held a slight lead over Antti Halme when the tournament was down to the last two hopefuls, and both players briefly discussed a deal without initially coming to a conclusion. However, when they returned to the seats, both agreed to ICM numbers and left ₱300,000 (~$5,953) as well as the trophy up for grabs. It took less than an hour to crown a champion, and it was Bansal who came out on top.

Bansal from Delhi/India considers himself to be an amateur at the tables. The 30-year-old is the co-founder of a company called SkyBulls which boasts financial advising by artificial intelligence. Bansal previously attended London Business School where he earned a Master’s Degree in business administration and management. He’s been playing poker for the last 7 years and to this date his biggest poker accomplishment is coming running up in the India Poker Championship for $15,942 in 2015.

"Sure, Antti has more experience playing than me, playing heads-up, but I think in heads-up there’s a lot of variance. So I wanted to do a deal based on ICM. But he felt that he is a better player. And he is, heads-up, to be fair. But we ended up coming to an agreement and it’s all good," Bansal mentioned when asked about the deal he struck with Halme.

“It’s crazy!” Bansal said about the poker boom in India. “I started playing about seven years ago, and about five years ago I was living in Vegas for two or three months playing poker and there was not that much happening in India. And now there poker rooms in most of the cities. There are big tournaments happening. We have the GOA [India Poker Championships] running which gets about 250 to 300 runners. So it’s pretty healthy and it’s growing steadily. So PokerStars should come there soon. My dream was to play in Bahamas. Couple of years ago I came, I think I was the bubble in a $10 qualifier, and after sever or eight levels I bubbled out. So I think I’m going to play that and Barcelona as well.”

Halme, a 27 year-old full-time poker player from Tampere/Finland, made the trip over to Manila alongside fellow countryman Aki Virtanen, who also cashed in the Main Event and came 8th in the PokerStars Cup. "I’m pretty happy,” Halme said about his finish. “The whole day when I came here I was a bit nervous, but the way it turned out, it was really good. I had a pretty good stack in the beginning, and I took some hits in the final two tables and I was in a tough spot between two big stacks, so getting to heads up was really good." Both Finns will be heading to Barcelona for the upcoming PokerStars Championship.

Early Action on the Final Day

The final day had barely started when Corbin White became the first casualty. The American poker pro got his short stack in with ace-jack and Michael Falcon called with ace-queen. A king-high flop gave both players a gutshot, but ultimately the kicker played to eliminate White. Next to join the rail was Raphael Gall. The German moved in for 15 big blinds from the button with jack-ten and Uday Bansal looked him up with pocket nines to stay ahead after an ace-high board.

Yo Seb Rhee, who had already finished 4th in the ₱215,000 High Roller Shot Clock during the festival, had to settle for 12th place and the Japanese busted in a big pot against Uday Bansal. Rhee was in the small blind and called a raise by Hoa Thinh Nguyen before Bansal three-bet from the big blind. Nguyen got out of the way, but Rhee four-bet and eventually called the five-bet shove by Bansal with ace-jack. Bansal's move with king-seven paid off after spiking a king on the flop and that vaulted the Indian into the top spot.

Duc Nguyen ran with pocket sevens into the pocket tens of Hoa Thinh Nguyen and there was no upset on a queen-high board. The final table bubble saw several players get short, but instead it was Germany's Andre Peters that was sent to the rail in cruel fashion. Peters three-bet shoved with pocket queens and Michael Falcon eventually called with pocket sixes to spike one of his two outs on the river and set up the following nine-handed final table.

Final Table Action

Down to just seven big blinds, Tien Than Nguyen moved all in with king-jack suited and picked up a call by Uday Bansal with pocket sevens. Neither jack, king or diamonds showed up on an ace-high board and Nguyen became the first casualty. Fellow countryman Hoa Thinh Nguyen followed shortly after, losing a flip with pocket tens against the king-queen of Michael Falcon when a queen came right away on the flop.

Kenneth Buck, a 61-year-old former Australian Air Force member that now lives here in Manila, was blinded out and forced all in from the big blind with ace-three. Michael Falcon held ace-four in the big blind and a possible split pot was crushed with a four on the river.

Sam Razavi, from Brighton/England who now calls Asia his home, finished runner-up in the APPT Manila Main Event last year for $73,552, has become a poker stalwart in the region with live tournament earnings of over $1.5 million. Razavi's bid to finish one place better than the previous year came to an end when he three-bet shoved with ace-eight and received an instant call by Antti Halme. There was no help on the board and Razavi had to settle for 6th place.

Down to the last five, Korea's Jaehyun Lim was the short stack and three-bet all in with queen-jack suited. Mike Takayama called with ace-king suited and flopped top two pair. Instead of a ten for the straight to help Lim, another king hit on the river and Takayama scooped the pot with a full house. Takayama, the last local player in the field and 4th place finisher of the 2016 APPT Manila, would be the next to fall. He four-bet all in with ace-eight and Antti Halme quickly called with pocket jacks to see the board run out queen-high.

Michael Falcon dominated Day 1b, the vast majority of Day 2 and the early stages of Day 3 before losing big chunks of his stack. The Dane made a move on a nine-high flop against both Antti Halme and Uday Bansal, and the latter called with queen-high for top pair to see Falcon turn over seven-three for a gutshot only. Both turn and river were blanks and the heads-up for the title and trophy was set.

After unfruitful first deal discussions, both players came to an agreement and the battle one-versus-one lasted less than an hour. Antti Halme lost a big chunk of his stack when rivering two pair with seven-five suited only to see Uday Bansal called with ace-six suited for the better two pair. Eventually, Halme found himself at risk with ace-ten and Bansal had the dominating ace-jack. It was all over after a jack came on the turn and the Indian rail celebrated.

Uday Bansal and Team India

That brings an end to the PokerNews live reporting here from Manila, and the next live event is just around the corner.

The PokerStars Festival Manila has a champion and it is India’s Uday Bansal who is victorious. Bansal continued to apply the pressure and kept Antti Halme on the back foot and while the Finnish player shoved on two occasions to take the blinds and antes he could not recover.

Uday Bansal moved all-in from the button and whittled down to his last 1.45 million in chips and sitting in the small blind Halme peeked down at his cards and made the call immediately for his tournament life and the cards were turned over.

Antti Halme: {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Uday Bansal: {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}

The cards have not been falling the Finn’s way since heads-up started and Halme was behind again, his ace dominated by Bansal’s and the {2-Spades}{7-Spades}{7-Clubs} flop was of no help and Bansal was just two cards away from fortune and glory and the watching rail crowded around.

The {j-Diamonds} turn brought cheers from the watching Team India and left Halme drawing dead and Halme got to his feet to shake his opponent’s hand.

The {3-Hearts} river was merely a formality and the PokerStars Festival Manila has its first ever champion in the form of India’s Uday Bansal who takes the trophy, title and the equivalent of $86,836 with Antti Halme taking home $84,797 for his runner up finish.

When the end came for Michael Falcon it came quickly and unexpectedly and the hand saw Uday Bansal retake the chip lead.

Play had not long resumed following the short break and Bansal made it 180,000 to go on the button with both Antti Halme (small blind) and Michael Falcon (big blind) making the call to take the action three-way to a flop of {9-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{5-Clubs}.

Both Halme and Falcon checked the action over to Bansal, who continuation bet 275,000. Halme made the call from the small blind and the action was back on Falcon in the big blind who quickly announced he was all-in for 2.83 million.

Bansal asked for a count and did not take long to flick in the calling chip and Halme quickly got out of the way.

Michael Falcon: {3-Diamonds}{7-Spades}
Uday Bansal: {q-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

Falcon had made a ballsy play with a gutshot draw to the deck’s four sixes and been looked up by Bansal with top pair and the rail crowded around to see what the poker gods had in store for both players.

The {j-Diamonds} turn was not a six and neither was the {8-Diamonds} river and Falcon got up to shake Bansal’s hand after the Indian player had finished celebrating with his watching rail. The Dane headed off to collect the equivalent of $48,780 and that took the action heads up in the PokerStars Festival Manila Main Event and the clock was paused while the two remaining players discuss the possibility of a deal.

Finland’s Antti Halme is hitting his form at just the right time and not long after clashing in those two pots against India’s Uday Bansal the Finn sent the field’s sole remaining Filipino player to the rail.

It was Mike Takayama who opened the action with a raise to 200,000 on the button and after Bansal folded out the small blind Halme squeezed his hole cards and reached for raising chips, sliding out a huge tower of red 25k chips for a raise to 600,000.

Takayama instantly announced all-in for just over 3.5 million in chips and was beaten into the pot by the Finn, who called so fast his chips left skid marks on the table and the cards were revealed.

Mike Takayama: {a-Spades}{8-Hearts}
Antii Halme: {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}

The Filipino rail crowded around and the sole Finnish rail (Aki Virtanen) raced up to give Halme support with a shoulder massage and it was off to the {6-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{5-Hearts} flop.

With both players holding a heart that brought Takayama no help and the {3-Diamonds} river saw the Filipino teeter on the edge of elimination. The {3-Clubs} river paired the board and brought Takayama’s Main Event to an end and he departed in 4th place for the equivalent of a $37,737 payday.

“Every time Aki gives me a shoulder massage I win,” chuckled Halme as he stacked up his newly won chips to climb to 7,735,000 and take the chip lead.

The three remaining players are on a short break.

The bust outs are coming thick and fast now and the final table is now down to four. It was Mike Takayama the man thinning the field, opening the action with a raise to 150,000 from under-the-gun and Korea’s Jaehyun Lim moved all-in for around 900,000 in total. Takayama called immediately and the cards were revealed.

Mike Takayama: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Jaehyun Lim: {q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

Lim was the at-risk player and Takayama held the best hand which improved even further when the flop fell {7-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} to give the Filipino top two pairs, though Lim had gutshot straight outs.

The {2-Hearts} turn saw these outs reduced slightly as Takayama picked up a backdoor heart draw and the {k-Diamonds} river saw the hometown hero improve to a full house and he stacked up to 3,550,000 while Lim headed for the cash desk to collect the equivalent of $29,792.

Sam Razavi Finishes in 6th Place (PHP1,170,000)

The very first hand back after the break saw the field reduced by one more, with the United Kingdom’s Sam Razavi falling at the hand’s of Finland’s Antti Halme.

It was Halme the man in the driver’s seat, accelerating to 130,000 from the cutoff and action folded around to Razavi in the big blind, who put his foot on the gas pedal and moved all-in for 1,170,000 in total.

The Finn made an extremely speedy call, usually never a good sign if you are the player who has just pulled the trigger, and the cards were turned over.

Sam Razavi: {a-Spades}{8-Clubs}
Antti Halme: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}

Halme was in front as a 70-30 favorite and the {4-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{5-Hearts} flop kept the Finn in the lead. The {5-Diamonds} turn left Razavi drawing to the deck’s three remaining aces and the {3-Hearts} river brought the Brit’s tournament to a close. Razavi departed in sixth place for a PHP1,170,000 (~$23,238) payday and Halme stacked up to 3,330,000 in chips.

Kenneth Buck

Kenneth Buck stood true to his word and folded every hand until he was forced all in for just 35,000 out of the big blind. Jaeyhun Lim limped in and so did Michael Falcon in the small blind. "Are you going to fold this time?" Falcon joked to Buck, who replied "I have a good hand, I am all in."

The flop fell {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Clubs} and both players checked. On the {5-Diamonds} turn, Falcon bet 150,000 and Lim folded.

Kenneth Buck: {A-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}
Michael Falcon: {A-Clubs}{4-Spades}

A split pot was very likely, but Falcon had a straight and flush draw as well. The {4-Diamonds} on the river indeed gave the Dane two pair and Buck was eliminated in 7th place, missing out on the target he had announced to the table. Buck receives PHP870,000 (~$17,280) and the remaining six players have PHP1,170,000 (~$23,238) locked up.

The final table has quickly gone from two Vietnamese players to zero in a remarkably short space of time. Michael Falcon won a pot over in the PokerStars Cup final table and ran over in time to raise to 110,000 from under-the-gun in the Main Event.

Hoa Thinh Nguyen moved all-in for 545,000 and the action folded around to Jaehyun Lim on the button, who mulled things over for a good three to four minutes before deciding to get out of the way and Falcon called.

Hoa Thinh Nguyen: {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Michael Falcon: {k-Spades}{q-Hearts}

It was the classic coin flip, Nguyen’s pocket pair racing against Falcon’s overcards and the Dane immediately paired his queen on the {9-Spades}{q-Clubs}{8-Clubs} flop, though Nguyen did have outs to a gutshot straight as well as the deck’s two remaining tens.

The {9-Diamonds} turn was of no help, and neither was the {2-Hearts} river and Nguyen headed for the rail in eighth place for a $11,800 payday.

Falcon also laddered up two places in the PokerStars Cup event while this was going on with two players busting in one hand to take that event down to six. Falcon is now up to 5.65 million in chips in the Main Event and is guaranteed a payday of PHP185,000 (~$3,665) in the PokerStars Cup.

It was a flip for the tournament life, and the board of {A-Spades}{6-Clubs}{2-Spades}{10-Spades}{9-Spades} failed to improve the player from Vietnam. Nguyen was eliminated in 9th place, earning a payday of PHP470,000 (~$9,335). All remaining players are now guaranteed at least PHP596,000 (~$11,837) for their efforts.

Andre Peters Eliminated in 10th Place (PHP385,000)

Level 25 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Andre Peters
Andre Peters

A brutal cooler of a hand saw the dealer take the deck straight out of the freezer and deal Germany’s Andre Peter’s an ice-cold hand. Pre-flop it was Michael ‘The Terminator’ Falcon the man wielding the pruning shears once more, popping the action up to 125,000 from the cutoff and the action folded around to Peters in the big blind.

The German player took his time over his decision but eventually pulled the trigger for another 790,000 more than Falcon’s initial raise, moving all-in for 915,000 in total.

Falcon asked for a count and decided to roll the dice, slapping down a tower of red 25k chips to represent the call and the cards were turned over.

Andre Peters: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Michael Falcon: {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}

Peters looked to be in great shape for a double up with the dominating hand and maintained his lead on the {10-Hearts}{a-Spades}{9-Diamonds} flop. Both players were on their feet and the {2-Clubs} turn changed nothing. The tension was palpable and while he held the lead Peters did not look comfortable, and paced agitatedly with his hands atop his head.

The dealer burned and turned and the river was the shiny black {6-Spades} to give Falcon a set of sixes and crush Peters dreams of a final table appearance in one of the cruellest ways imaginable. The German player looked visibly crushed when Falcon came over to shake his hand and departed in 10th place for the equivalent of $7,640 while Falcon regained the chip lead and stacked up to 6.1 million.

Play is currently paused for a re-draw.
