Who Will Win the NJCOOP Main Event?

Shankar Pillai
Shankar Pillai

Fifty-two players will be returning Monday evening at 7 p.m. ET for Day 2 of the PokerStars 2020 New Jersey Championship of Online Poker Main Event with their eyes set on the top prize of $22,444, all of whom survived Sunday’s Day 1 from the 422 recorded entries.

Shankar “Burgersssss” Pillai will enter play with the rest of the field looking up at him and his stack of 2.44 million. Pillai is no stranger to the bright lights, having amassed lifetime earnings of over $1.96 million. He has also been plenty active and successful online in 2020, scoring more than a dozen cashes over this past summer for over $1.2 million of those winnings.

Arian "angel zera" Stolt comes into the day next in chips (2.27 million) as the only other player above 2 million. Jaime "moosedeer17" Reyes (1.91 million), “zBeanHeaDz” (1.87 million), and Kevin "T1111111111M" Campbell round out the top five.

Other players of note who are in contention include Dan “monkeyma067” Sewnig (870,629), Dan “AvaGray” Lupo (779,375), Sanjeev “sandman9876” Datta (541,244), Mike “mmenz08816” Menzer (230,636), and Daniel “loxonbagel” Buzgon (476,858), who is in search of his second NJCOOP title after winning Event #20 (8-Game) earlier this month.

Play resumes in Level 23 with blinds of 12,500/25,000 and an ante of 3,250. Levels will be 18 minutes in length and will continue until one player has amassed every chip in play to claim the NJCOOP Main Event title. Who will be that one? Follow along on PokerNews to find out.

Event Highlights

The NJCOOP series, which will run through October 26, features $1 million in total guarantees across 54 events.

The crown jewel of the series is of course the $300 No-Limit Hold'em Main Event, which boasts a $125,000 guarantee. That one takes place Sunday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. local time.

It'll be accompanied by a smaller $50 No-Limit Hold'em Mini Main Event, with a $25,000 guarantee.

Players who enjoy non-hold'em formats will also have plenty to choose from. There are several pot-limit Omaha events, including a $500 six-max high roller. There's even $100 Pot-Limit Badugi, $100 H.O.R.S.E. and $100 5-Card PLO.

PokerStars NJ is also committed to giving frustrated players extra value via freeroll tickets. Those who get eliminated shy of the money will be given tickets into events awarding more NJCOOP seats.

Following up Huge Spring and Summer Series

Action has been intense as ever on PokerStars NJ this year with some big tournament series hitting the client awarding some hefty prizes.

In April, New Jersey Spring Championship of Online Poker ran, with 620 entries in the similar $300 Main Event. "moledaddy" took home more than $30,000 for first place in that one.

A follow-up in July, the Bounty Builders series, saw more than $700,000 awarded over the course of a few weeks. Network superstar Daniel "AvaGray" Lupo, featured here on PokerNews, won about $14K in the Main Event.

Bees Busts

Michael Bees
Michael Bees

Action folded around to "LetsW1n" in the cutoff, who opened to 66,000 and saw Michael "KneadDaRiver" Bees three-bet shove for 495,000 in the small blind. "LetsW1n" called.

Michael "KneadDaRiver" Bees: {k-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
"LetsW1n": {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

The flop came {2-Spades}{10-Spades}{9-Hearts} to give Bees two more outs to a straight, but that was the closest he would get as the turn {6-Diamonds} and river {2-Hearts} completed the runout and left his opponent's jacks up best.

Final Three Tables Reached

Level 26 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
"S_R732"
"S_R732"

Kevin "T1111111111M" Campbell opened the action with a raise to 88,000 under the gun and "S_R732" three-bet jammed for 478,000 in the hijack. Action made its way back to Campbell and he called to send the two off to the races.

"S_R732": {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Kevin "T1111111111M" Campbell: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

Campbell spiked a king on the flop {j-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} and remained ahead as the turn {5-Hearts} and river {6-Hearts} completed the runout to eliminate "S_R732" from the tournament in 28th place. Three full tables of nine now remain.

"DabledoreNJ" Over Five Million

Level 28 : 30,000/60,000, 7,500 ante
"DabledoreNJ"
"DabledoreNJ"

"BearChckn" saw action fold to them in the hijack and raised to 120,000. "DabledoreNJ" three-bet to 420,000 in the small blind and "BearChckn" four-bet jammed for 1.7 million. "DabledoreNJ" quickly called.

"BearChckn": {a-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
"DabledoreNJ": {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

The flop {5-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{4-Spades} put "DabledoreNJ" even further in front with top set, leaving "BearChckn" with nothing but potential flush, wheel, and Broadway backdoors. The turn {a-Diamonds} instead improved them to top pair, which left them drawing dead to the river {k-Hearts} to finish the tournament in 21st place.

Moments later, both "TSwiftFan1989" and Arian "angel zera" Stolt were also knocked out of the tournament, leaving just 18 players in contention across two tables. As soon as that happened, the short-stacked "ELITEMALESSO" hung on as long as they could before finishing in 18th place, becoming the last player in the tournament to earn $992.

All 17 remaining players have now locked up at least $1,126.

"pmartin23" Finds Aces Drawing Dead on Flop To Bust

Level 29 : 35,000/70,000, 8,750 ante
"pmartin23"
"pmartin23"

"LetsW1n" raised to 175,000 in middle position and "laura33188" called in the hijack before action folded to "pmartin23", who three-bet shoved for 755,000. "LetsW1n" reraised all in for 3 million, more than enough to put "laura33188" to a decision for all of their chips, and they wasted no time folding to let the other two have at it.

"pmartin23": {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}
"LetsW1n": {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

"pmartin23" went from being in excellent shape to drawing dead in the blink of an eye as the flop came {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{k-Hearts} to give "LetsW1n" quads. The turn {8-Spades} and river {8-Diamonds} completed the runout and "pmartin23" was eliminated in 14th place, earning $1,226 for their two-day effort.

With 13 remaining, all remaining players have now locked up at least $1,516.

Wood Unable To Come All The Way Back

Level 31 : 50,000/100,000, 12,500 ante
"s3lfreliance"
"s3lfreliance"

Action folded around to Brian "s3lfreliance" Wood in the cutoff and he opened to 250,000. Two folds ensued to put action onto "laura33188", who three-bet to put Wood all in from the big blind, and Wood called off his stack of 2.09 million.

Brian "s3lfreliance" Wood: {a-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
"laura33188": {k-Spades}{j-Hearts}

Things were good for Wood but got bad on the flop {j-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}. They only got worse on the turn {k-Clubs}, leaving him drawing dead as the river {k-Hearts} unnecessarily and further improved "laura33188" to a full house, sending Wood to the virtual payout desk in 13th place.

Tournament Reaches the Final Table At Break

Level 32 : 60,000/120,000, 15,000 ante
"pompii23"
"pompii23"

Hand #1: Action folded around to "pompii23" on the button and they jammed for 1.52 million. "DabledoreNJ" called in the small blind.

"pompii23": {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}
"DabledoreNJ": {a-Hearts}{9-Clubs}

"pompii23" was poised for the double and the flop {3-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} kept them way out in front. Unfortunately for them, the turn {9-Hearts} changed everything, giving "DabledoreNJ" a pair of nines that would end up holding as the river {10-Clubs} completed the runout to result in "pompii23" being eliminated from the tournament in 11th place.

Hand #2: A minute later, Jaime "moosedeer17" Reyes raised to 264,000 under the gun and action folded around to "sunsvet7580", who defended their big blind.

"sunsvet7580" led out for 331,000 on a flop of {q-Clubs}{2-Spades}{k-Clubs} and Reyes shoved for 1.59 million effective, which "sunsvet7580" called to put themselves at risk for their tournament life.

"sunsvet7580": {q-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}
Jaime "moosedeer17" Reyes: {k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}

"sunsvet7580" was in trouble with their middle pair up against Reyes' top pair and they found no help as the turn {3-Hearts} and river {4-Clubs} completed the runout and result in their elimination from the tournament in 10th place.

"sunsvet7580"

Shankar "Burgersssss" Pillai Eliminated in 8th Place ($2,556)

Level 33 : 70,000/140,000, 17,500 ante
Shankar Pillai
Shankar Pillai

Hand #1: "st0neydanza" raised to 301,000 in early position and action folded around to Shankar "Burgersssss" Pillai, who was in the small blind and three-bet to 1.05 million. "st0neydanza" came over the top, four-betting all in for 4.9 million and Pillai made the call.

"st0neydanza": {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Shankar "Burgersssss" Pillai: {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}

Pillai had a shot at becoming the chip leader should he win the coin flip, but instead saw the flop come {8-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{q-Spades} to give his opponent a pair of kings that would remain best as the turn {4-Hearts} and river {3-Diamonds} completed the runout and "st0neydanza" earned the pot of over 10 million.

"st0neydanza"
"st0neydanza"

Hand #2: Two hands later, action folded around to Pillai in the cutoff and he shoved for 2.8 million. "st0neydanza" was in the big blind and called to bring about round two.

Shankar "Burgersssss" Pillai: {4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}
"st0neydanza": {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}

Pillai had found himself in troubling shape and at risk of finishing the tournament in eighth place. That became more likely as "st0neydanza" hit a set on the flop {8-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{5-Hearts}. Pillai turned a gutshot straight draw on {7-Diamonds}, but was unable to fulfill the backdoor draw on the river {j-Diamonds} and was eliminated from the tournament, earning a payday of $2,556.

Action folded around to the small blind, where "laura33188" shoved to put Ryan "hagz2richez" Hagerty all in for 3.2 million. Hagerty called, wasting no time to do so.

Ryan "hagz2richez" Hagerty: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
"laura33188": {j-Hearts}{6-Spades}

Hagerty wasn't in front for much longer as the flop came {4-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. The turn {q-Hearts} took away two more of his outs, and the river {q-Spades} made his seventh-place finish official, earning $3,486 for his finish.
