PokerNews's own Mike "Patty98" Patrick became a PokerStars Ontario Championship of Online Poker champion on Day 8 of the inaugural ONCOOP after winning Event 29-L: $20 NLO8 [7-Max, Progressive KO].

Event 29-L: $20 NLO8 [7-Max, Progressive KO]

Patrick navigated his way through a starting field of 178 entries and was in third place at the start of the seven-handed final table with 510,388, behind chip leader "tgson" with 1,321,246.

"tgson" extended their chip lead when "va1umart," down to 293,599, moved all in and "tgson" called. "tgson" turned the nut straight with a seven-five low to scoop the pot and send "va1umart" out as the first casualty of the final table.

Patrick claimed the next three bounties at the final table. First, "ShaunnieG" shoved for 163,118, Patrick reshoved, and the rest of the table got out of the way. Patrick's two aces stayed in front to bust "ShaunnieG" in sixth place. "Islandrob" had just 94,042, good for three big blinds, when they got their last chips in and Patrick called in the big blind. Patrick rivered a flush with an eight-six to scoop the pot and knock out another player.

Finally, "ChuaSun" was all in for 282,006 and Patrick made trip deuces to claim yet another bounty. The next hand, he called a bet of 218,250 on the river with three tens showing. "tgson" had pocket queens for tens full of queens, but Patrick showed two kings for tens full of kings to take the pot and the chip lead three-handed.

"lauren053" was the first to cross 2,000,000 after Patrick bet 120,000 on a king-high board with two diamonds. "lauren053" raised to 280,000 and Patrick called before both players checked the river, "lauren053" taking the pot with kings and jacks to beat Patrick"s busted flush draw.

"tgson" jumped back into the lead after three-betting to 360,000 pre-flop and receiving a call from "lauren053." "tgson" continued for 461,250 on the flop and "lauren053" folded as "tgson" moved past 2,000,000. "lauren053" then raised to 180,000 from the big blind and Patrick called. The flop came ace-high and "lauren053" got their last 349,663 in the middle. Patrick called as "lauren053" revealed aces for top set. Patrick, though, rivered a straight to win the pot and eliminate the one-time chip leader in third place.

"tgson" led 2,845,845 to 1,604,155 at the start of heads-up play, but that lead would be short-lived. On the second hand, "tgson" bet 270,000 on the river, Patrick raised to 660,000, and "tgson" called. Patrick showed a straight to win the 1,600,000 chip pot and move into the lead.

On what would be the last hand of the tournament, "tgson" bet 375,000 on a king-high board and Patrick called to the river. "tgson" bet another 930,000, Patrick shoved, and "tgson" called all in for 535,845. "tgson" had two eights for a set, but Patrick had jack-ten for the nut straight to win the tournament.

"I was just saying repeatedly, please have a set and call, please have a set and call. And fortunately, he did," Patrick said following his win.

"It's been kind of tough to be a mixed game player in Ontario since we went into the ring fence, but I love that PokerStars put this series together to give players a chance to win prestigious events and to introduce new players to the joy of mixed games. And, yeah, it feels amazing to win one of them."

Event 27-L: $20 NLHE [7-Max, Progressive KO, Mini Fat Saturday]

Steve "BetrThanPhil" Tripp was looking for his third title of the series and second in as many days as he took a massive chip lead when the starting field of 384 in Event 27-L: $20 NLHE [7-Max, Progressive KO, Mini Fat Saturday] was reduced to just five players.

"bigblazer879" narrowed the gap when they bet 90,000 on a king-high flop. "Stuey_Ungar2" raised to 378,000 and "bigblazer879" called. Both players checked the turn before an ace fell on the river. "bigblazer879" shoved and "Stuey-Ungar2" called for their last 1,077,177, showing ace-three for two pair, aces and deuces. "bigblazer879," though, had ace-four for aces and fours as "Stuey-Ungar2" was eliminated in fifth place.

Tripp still led the remaining four players with 3,883,545, followed by "bigblazer879" with 3,693,121, "J23oe" with 1,448,714, and "Killer CarmB" with 574,620. "Killer CarmB" moved up to more than 1,000,000 when they shoved the flop and "bigblazer879" called with ace-four for the flopped wheel. "Killer CarmB" had two sixes and made a higher straight on the turn with a four to double up.

Tripp won a race with jacks against ace-king to knock out "J23oe" in fourth place before "bigblazer879" got their chips back from "Killer CarmB." "bigblazer879" was all in for 1,703,711 with king-ten against ace-jack and turned a king to double up and take the chip lead.

"Killer CarmB" was left with just 298,769 and was eliminated two hands later as "bigblazer879" made trips with ace-queen. Tripp led 5,343,009 to 4,256,991 at the start of heads-up play, but on the second hand, "bigblazer879" bet 1,023,000 on an ace-high board and got a fold in a 1,800,000 chip pot to jump back into the lead.

The next hand, Tripp bet 231,570 on a board with two kings. "bigblazer879" raised to 823,140 and Tripp called. "bigblazer879" bet another 1,080,000 on the river and Tripp called with ace-king for trips. "bigblazer879" could only show ten-eight for a bluff as Tripp retook a big chip lead.

On a king-high flop, "bigblazer879" raised to 364,140 and Tripp called. He called another bet of 660,000 on the turn before "bigblazer879" shoved for 2,293,461 when the river came a queen. Tripp gave up his hand as "bigblazer879" pulled back to nearly even in chips.

"bigblazer879" took the lead after picking off a big bluff with ace-high, then extended their advantage by winning a 2,300,000 chip pot with a pair of eights. On the final hand, "bigblazer879" bet 80,000 on an ace-high flop. Tripp raised to 240,000, "bigblazer879" reraised to 640,000, and Tripp moved all in for 2,668,114. "bigblazer879" called with aces for top set, while Tripp had a straight draw. The board paired on the turn to give "bigblazer879" a full house and leave Tripp drawing dead, his run at a third ONCOOP title falling just short.
