Rogers Check-Jams

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

A player raised to 2,500 on the button, and Leyla Rogers called in the big blind.

Rogers checked the {2-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{2-Hearts} flop to her opponent, who bet 2,000. Rogers called.

The {10-Diamonds} fell on the turn, and Rogers checked again. Her opponent bet 4,500, and Rogers check-raised all in for 19,400. The button gave it some thought, then folded.

John-Paul Portal Wins the $235 Progressive Knockout

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
John-Paul Portal
John-Paul Portal

While PokerNews is focused on bringing you live updates from the $600 Main Event, we also wanted to share some winner news from earlier in the Run It Up Reno IX. There have been several champions crowned at the Peppermill, and tens of thousands of dollars awarded.

John-Paul Portal scored the biggest tournament win of his career Monday night, taking down the $235 Progressive Knockout event (273 entries) at RIU Reno IX. Portal outlasted a final table that included Timothy Guilford, last year’s defending champion, and took the championship after besting second-place finisher Chris Choy in the heads-up battle from the Peppermill Resort in Reno, Nevada.

Portal takes home a total payday of $8,911, with $5,111 coming as the first-place prize, along with $3,800 in progressive bounties. The win was just the second career cash for Portal, who hails from south Florida and plays poker as a hobby.

“I saw this tournament and I wanted to come out and play it,” Portal said. “This progressive bounty is awesome.”

The final hand saw Choy go all in with ace-five offsuit, and Portal call with ten-eight of hearts. Portal got a nine on the flop and the pair held up, securing the championship. Choy takes home $5,111 for the runner-up finish.

Zhang Makes Tough Fold

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

With the flop showing {10-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{3-Spades}, Hong Zhang checked from the small blind. Scott Hoffer went all in for 38,000, sending Zhang deep into the tank.

Zhang eventually folded, showing {q-}{q-}. Hoffer offered to let him see the hand he was up against, and Zhang flipped over Hoffer's {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs} for the rest of the table.

The river fell {4-Hearts}, the small blind checked, and Caldwell bet 14,500, getting the fold.

Garyet Can't Hit Against Phu

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante

Chad Holloway had a decision to make from the hijack on a {7-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{8-Spades} flop, as Vincent Phu had jammed for 46,500 from the small blind, and Chad Garyet committed his last 38,000 in middle position. Holloway, who had 5,000 already committed, tanked for a bit before preserving his last 23,000 by flashing {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and folding.

Chad Garyet: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Vincent Phu: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}

Phu's queens had to fade a lot of outs to survive, and the {5-Clubs} turn and {4-Clubs} river bricked off for Garyet's overs and the nut flush draw to earn the knockout for Phu, while Holloway acknowledged that he folded the winner.
