Presley Surges to Big Day 1a Lead; Five RunGood Pros Advance

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 400 ante
Terry Presley has nearly double the second-place player.
Terry Presley has nearly double the second-place player.

Terry Presley rode a late heater to a big chip lead on Day 1a of RunGoodGear.com Hard Rock Tulsa $100,000 Guaranteed Main Event. He finished with 319,800, a massive stack with blinds at 1,000/2,000/400, when the tournament was forced to a stop with 18 players left — 15 percent of the 127-player field.

Joining Presley on Day 2 will be five RunGood-sponsored pros: Ben Reason (172,900), Dan "Wretchy" Martin (156,600), Michael Sanders (82,100), Ross Bybee (77,600), and AP Phahurat (32,200). Others punching tickets to Sunday's Day 2 included Sam Panzica (186,600), Rodney Spriggs (121,500), Lynn Samples (121,000), John Martin (115,600), and Brady Bullard (106,800).

Presley's surge began when he grabbed the chip lead about an hour before the day came to a close. He added to that lead when he checked on the turn in a pot where the board read {7-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{8-Spades}, and Johnny McDonald checked behind him. On the {9-Diamonds} river, Presley fired out 25,000 and was quickly called. He flipped the {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for trip eights, and he had gotten lucky indeed as McDonald showed the {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} for aces up.

A few minutes later, after a flop of {6-Hearts}{5-Spades}{4-Clubs}, Spriggs bet 16,200 from under the gun. Presley made it 35,000 from his left, and Ruth Hall called off her stack of about 22,000 from the blinds.

"If you can't raise, you should fold," Spriggs declared after a couple of minutes of thought, mucking what he said was two kings. "Set or two pair?" he asked Presley.

His read was on, as Presley held the {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} for a set. Hall had the {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}, and she was seeking an eight for a set or a seven for a straight. The {7-Hearts} arrived on the turn, but what Hall wasn't seeking was two sevens, and that's what she got on the {7-Spades} river. Presley dragged the massive pot with his boat, leaving Hall busted.

Some players who will have to run it back on Day 1b after busting today included bracelet winners Bryan Campanello and Jordan Morgan, Jeff Bryan, Rob Salaburu, Justin Gardenhire, Jamie Kerstetter, Jonathan Gaviao, and Bernard Lee.

Well-known pro Lee met his end at the hands of Hall, when Lee bet 6,800 on a board of {5-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} after one player checked, and Hall called from the button. The third player folded, and Lee checked the {5-Spades} river. Hall shoved all in, and Lee snap-called.

"Whoa," he said, surprised to see Hall's {q-}{q-}. Lee flicked {j-}{j-} up in disappointment and sent his last 21,500 across the felt.

Day 1b will be another chance for Lee and the rest of the vanquished, and it begins at noon local time on Saturday. Come back to PokerNews then for more coverage.

Martin Busts Gaviao

Jonathan Gaviao bowed out late.
Jonathan Gaviao bowed out late.

Jonathan Gaviao put the last 13,000 or so in from early position and was called by small blind Dan Martin. Gaviao asked for spades as he turned over {10-Spades}{7-Spades}, dominated by Martin's {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}. Nothing materialized for Gaviao, and he'll have to take another crack at it tomorrow.

Dream River for Samples

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 300 ante
Lynn Samples hit a straight flush.
Lynn Samples hit a straight flush.

We found the dealer counting down stacks at one of the tables with the hole cards on their backs and the board ran out. Lynn Samples held {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}, good for a straight flush on the {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} board. According to the players at the table, Samples three-bet a preflop opener and then fired the first two streets. On the river, her opponent bet into her and then called her shove with {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}, a worthless nut flush.

Gaviao Doubles Through Spriggs

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Jonathan Gaviao
Jonathan Gaviao

Rodney Spriggs raised from the cutoff and then called the shove of Jonathan Gaviao on the button, who had just 6,200 more.

Spriggs: {9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}
Gaviao: {a-Hearts}{9-Clubs}

Spriggs was dismayed to see he didn't have live cards, and the board ran out {j-}{10-}{q-}{6-}{k-}, giving both players straights, but Gaviao a superior one.

At another table, Rob Salaburu shipped off a portion of his stack when he jammed a queen-high flop with {a-}{k-}, only to run into a player holding {a-}{q-}, according to a bystander.

Fortunate Flop for Spriggs

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Rodney Spriggs busted a player's kings with ten-deuce.
Rodney Spriggs busted a player's kings with ten-deuce.

Rodney Spriggs opened for a raise in the cutoff and then called a three-bet to 3,900 from the player in the big blind. On the {2-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} flop, the big blind bet 5,000 and called when Spriggs put him all in.

"I've got a deuce," Spriggs said, turning over {10-Hearts}{2-Hearts}.

"Are you s******* me?" the big blind said, jetting out of his seat after tabling {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}.

He pushed his chair into the table in frustration as the dealer ran out the rest of the board, which brought no help.

Straight Flush for Salaburu

Level 5 : 150/300, 50 ante

Rob Salaburu, pictured in a different event.

Rob Salaburu got all in on the river on a board of {6-Hearts}{q-Spades}{5-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and was called by his opponent. Salaburu showed {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for a straight flush, and his opponent mucked. The floor was called and the hand was turned over, per tournament rules: {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}.

"Worst card in the world," Salaburu's opponent muttered. "Completed everything..."

Salaburu, a former Main Event final tablist, has more than $1 million in career cashes.

Martin Binks a Triple

Level 2 : 50/100, 0 ante
Dan Martin, pictured at a different event.
Dan Martin, pictured at a different event.

Multiple players had 600 in front of them before the flop when we arrived at Dan "Wretchy" Martin's table. A player on the button had made it 2,200 to go and been cold-called by the big blind. Martin tossed his last 7,900 in, and the button moved in for 11,225 after everyone else folded. The big blind took a minute or two to think, but he called the shoves.

Martin: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Big blind: {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Button: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

The flop brought a straight draw for Martin as {8-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{5-Clubs} hit the felt, and an {a-Spades} helped nobody on the turn. Martin found a {9-Hearts} river for a set though, and he tripled up, while the player on the button won a small side pot to survive.
