Bunch Rolls on Day 1b, Bags Overall Lead

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 400 ante
Eric Bunch topped the Day 1b field.
Eric Bunch topped the Day 1b field.

Eric Bunch defended home turf on Day 1b of RunGoodGear.com Hard Rock Tulsa Main Event, bagging 340,500 to best Day 1a leader Terry Presley's 319,800 and take the overall lead into Sunday's Day 2. Bunch hails from nearby Collinsville, Okla., and he's looking for his first five-figure cash after topping the 190-player flight.

Steven DuCharme (199,000), Noah Nodine (188,300), Mesgana Tesfaridet (166,200), Matt Bond (155,400), tour pro Clint Tolbert (123,200), Matt Newcombe (108,800), and Tam Nguyen (101,700) also tote six-figure stacks into Sunday. A total of 34 made it through.

Bunch's climb began by getting it all in on the turn with the board reading {5-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}. Tolbert had {8-}{6-} for a pair and an open-ender, but Bunch had top-top with the {a-Clubs}{10-Hearts}. Tolbert had lots of outs, but it was Bunch improving on the {10-Clubs} river. Tolbert would go on to reenter and survive the day.

Bunch's run continued a bit later when he flopped a set of kings against a set of fives to bust another foe.

Bunch had heaps when he dragged the biggest pot of the night during Level 11. He checked the turn on an {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} board, and his opponent bet 14,000. Bunch, who was in the big blind, put a stack of orange T5,000 chips in: 70,000. His opponent leaned back in his seat, crossed his arms, and tanked for a few minutes before pushing all in for about 14,000 more. Bunch called, and the hands were revealed.

Bunch: {j-}{j-}
Opponent: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}

Bunch's set was best, but he had to fade diamonds, eights, and kings. A red card hit, but it was the {5-Hearts}, and Bunch added to his tournament-leading stack.

Notable players bowing out during the course of the 12 levels of play were World Series of Poker bracelet winner Jordan Morgan, tour pro Bernard Lee, Jeff Bryan, Jonathan Gaviao, Issac "Rungood" Tucker, Keith Ferrera, and former chip leader Ben Armstrong.

Morgan's end came on the last hand of the night, when he three-bet all in with the {6-Spades}{4-Spades} and was called by Newcombe, who held the {a-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}. A {q-Clubs}{a-Spades}{5-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} run out spelled the end for the bracelet winner.

Coverage of the tournament resumes when Day 2 begins at noon on Sunday, so come back to PokerNews to see who claims the first prize of $48,716.

Morgan Busto on Last Hand

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 400 ante
Jordan Morgan tried doubling up before the day's end.
Jordan Morgan tried doubling up before the day's end.

Jordan Morgan pushed all in for 23,600 in the cutoff after Matt Newcombe opened for 4,500 under the gun. Everyone else folded, and Newcombe thought for awhile, saying he felt he was behind, before making the call.

Morgan: {6-Spades}{4-Spades}
Newcombe: {a-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}

The board ran out {q-Clubs}{a-Spades}{5-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}, missing Morgan's flush draw, and he headed for the exits as everyone else prepared to bag up.

Nemeth Rolls With Suited Connectors

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Brandon Nemeth
Brandon Nemeth

We found three players' hands turned over before the flop at one of the tables. The shortest stack had about 10,000 and was holding {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}, while Brandon Nemeth had {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts} and about 5,000 more. A third player had put both at risk with {2-Hearts}{2-Spades}.

The dealer spread a {q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} flop, giving Nemeth life with a flush draw.

"Heart," he said. "Heart."

An {a-Diamonds} improved the position of the short stack slightly, but a {j-Hearts} river gave Nemeth the flush he needed to survive.

Bryan Shoves Ace-High, Wins

Level 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Danny Bryan
Danny Bryan

We found Danny Bryan all in for 17,900 on the turn, just more than the size of the pot. The board was {3-Spades}{7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}, and Bryan's opponent was thinking it over from the cutoff.

"I have a flush draw," he announced. "And a straight draw. But, your flush might be bigger than mine."

After another minute he forcefully placed calling chips in. Bryan tabled {a-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for ace-high, but he was leading the {q-Clubs}{9-Clubs} of his opponent. The board paired with the {3-Diamonds}, and Bryan scooped the sizable pot with his high card.

Jonathan Gaviao
Jonathan Gaviao

After two checks from the blinds, Jonathan Gaviao bet 4,800 into a pot of 4,100. The community had come {9-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{q-Hearts}{2-Spades}, and the small blind quickly folded. The big blind, however, tossed in a call, and Gaviao showed {6-Spades}{4-Spades} for a flush.

Mitchell Sends Lee to Reentry Desk

Level 1 : 25/50, 0 ante
Bernard Lee's flopped straight was run down.
Bernard Lee's flopped straight was run down.

Bernard Lee bet 3,125 on a board of {6-Hearts}{5-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{6-Clubs}, and Amber Mitchell raised to 7,000 from the button. Lee shoved all in, and Mitchell snapped. Lee showed {9-Clubs}{7-Spades} for a flopped straight, but the river had been kind to Mitchell, filling her {8-Spades}{8-Hearts} up to bust Lee, who had a bit less than Mitchell's remaining 12,850.

Welcome to Day 1b of RunGoodGear.com Hard Rock Tulsa

RunGoodGear.com Hard Rock Tulsa
RunGoodGear.com Hard Rock Tulsa

After a Day 1a that saw 18 players advance to Sunday's Day 2, Day 1b is set to kick off shortly here at RunGoodGear.com Hard Rock Tulsa.

This will be the final chance to qualify for Day 2, and we expect to see some familiar faces. Among those failing to advance yesterday were Bryan Campanello, Jordan Morgan, Bernard Lee, Jamie Kerstetter, Jeff Bryan, Rob Salaburu, Justin Gardenhire, and Jonathan Gaviao. It would be a surprise if some or all of them weren't hunched over a pair of cards in half an hour.

They'll be playing a $675 buy in with unlimited reentries until the dinner break, which comes at the end of Level 9. Levels will vary in length, beginning at 30 minutes and progressing to 40 minutes at Level 7 and 50 minutes at Level 13. Everyone will start with a stack of 15,000, and we'll let you know who manages to run it up and who falls by the wayside.
