Tepen Bags Day 1a Lead as 15 Advance

Level 13 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Ryan Tepen

Day 1a of 2015 RunGood Poker Series Council Bluffs Main Event, the first stop of four on the Road to the RunGood Cup, drew 80 runners for $675 apiece. When it was all said and done, 15 of them advanced to Sunday's Day 2 after 13 levels of play.

Tour-sponsored pro Ryan Tepen bagged the biggest stack with 176,500. Tepen has accumulated more than $688,000 in cashes over a live poker career stretching back to 2008. His home tour has been kind to him as he finished 10th at a different RunGood event here earlier this year for $4,298 and got fifth at RunGood Downstream a month prior to that for $9,635.

Jon Lawson raced out to an early lead, amazingly running his 20,000 starting stack up nearly 120,000 by the first break. He looked a strong favorite to bag the lead for much of the day, but a brutal beat late derailed his efforts.

On a board of {9-}{8-}{2-}{9-}, Mike Tang bet from the cutoff seat and snap-called when Lawson check-shipped all in from the blinds to put Tang at risk for about his last 60,000 or so. Tang had the {a-Spades}{9-Spades}, and Lawson had {2-}{2-}.

Tang, who finished second at RunGood Downstream in 2014, got the help he needed when he spiked quads on the river.

Lawson still managed to put 95,500 in the bag, while Tang ended the night with 137,500. Other notables to advance included Josh Reichard (154,000), RunGood Pro Michael Sanders (136,500), Nick Manganaro (122,500), Terry Karn (110,500), Clint Lilienthal (101,000), and RunGood Pro Jamie Kerstetter (77,000).

Eric Rodawig, Bryan Campanello, Mike Lang, Mark Fink, Jeff Bryan, Brandon Fish, plus RunGood Pros Jonathan Gaviao, Jose Montes, Justin Gardenhire, Chris Conrad, and Ross Bybee were some of the notables who busted during the course of play.

Bybee, who already has a RunGood main event win to his credit, had ran up a nice early stack before his aces got cracked. He then lost the rest with {q-}{q-} all in preflop against Tang's {a-}{q-}.

Eliminated players have plenty more chances to qualify for Day 2, as Saturday will feature 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. starting flights here at the Horseshoe.

On a board of {9-}{8-}{2-}{9-}, Mike Tang bet from the cutoff and snap-called when Jon Lawson check-shipped all in from the blinds to put Tang at risk for about his last 60,000 or so.

Tang: {a-Spades}{9-Spades}
Lawson: {2-}{2-}

"Come on, dude," Tang urged upon seeing he was behind.

The dealer burned and turned the last nine in the deck, giving Tang quads and causing him to celebrate.

Quads on the Flop

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Josh Reichard
Josh Reichard

After the small blind limped in, Josh Reichard pushed all in for 12,100. The small blind called with {a-}{8-} and was ahead of Reichard's {q-}{5-}. Not for long though as Reichard flopped quads when the other three fives emerged, ending the hand.

Lawson Still Running Hot

Level 7 : 400/800, 100 ante

Eric Rodawig opened under the gun for 1,800 and got two calls on his immediate left. The small blind pushed all in for 11,250, and Rodawig folded after getting the count. Jon Lawson called, and the last player folded {a-}{q-} face-up.

Lawson: {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}
Small blind: {a-Spades}{8-Diamonds}

The two were racing but Lawson had a bit of a head start with an ace dead. The board ran out {5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{7-Clubs}, and Lawson took it down with a rivered set.

Tang Picks Off Gardenhire

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

We found Mike Tang in the big blind considering a bet of 6,150 from Justin Gardenhire on a board of {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{2-Spades}{a-Spades}. The bet was about double the pot, and Tang flashed Gardenhire the {q-Clubs}.

"Queen of clubs?" Gardenhire said. "Oh, you're never folding.

"Alright," Tang said after thinking a bit. "I'll call."

Gardenhire said he couldn't beat it and Tang showed {q-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}.

Tang has cashed in two previous RunGood main events, including a second-place finish at RunGood Downstream last year for $22,334. Gardenhire was also at that final table, where he finished third for $15,091.

Welcome to Day 1a of RunGood Poker Series Council Bluffs

Henry Gingerich
Henry Gingerich

The RunGood Poker Series is back with the Road to the RunGood Cup, a four-part tournament series that kicks off today at 7 p.m. local time at Horseshoe Council Bluffs, just a few short minutes east of Omaha, Neb.

After a couple of preliminary events, the Main Event gets underway tonight, a $675 buy-in with unlimited reentries. It's the first of three starting flights, and not only will the winner claim the lion's share of a $100,000 guaranteed prize pool, but the final nine runners will receive $2,000 packages to the season-ending RunGood Cup Championship.

Last time the RunGood tour came through town, 426 runners created a prize pool of more than $250,000, and Henry Gingerich walked away with $57,806 and a $10,000 Main Event seat.

This year's event will once again feature 30-minute levels on Day 1a, with 13 levels scheduled to be play. Blinds will begin at 25/50 and each starting stack will be 20,000.
