Russell Licking, Justin Gardenhire Atop Day 1a Counts

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Russell Licking
Russell Licking

RunGood Poker Series' first ever $1,100 Main Event kicked off at Horseshoe Council Bluffs, and 68 players turned out for the first of two starting days. When the dust settled, Russell Licking had piled up 240,500 for the chip lead, besting the 213,500 bagged by RunGood Pro Justin Gardenhire.

Success on his home circuit isn't new to Gardenhire. Early this year alone, he chopped RunGood Hard Rock Tulsa for $40,000 and got 15th at RunGood Council Bluffs for $2,281 more. He also finished third in October 2014 for $15,091.

Gardenhire picked up a couple of big pots late to help his surge. He busted Dash Daenz in a three-bet pot when the Daenz shipped {q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} from the button on a {3-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop after Gardenhire bet with {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} in the small blind. Then, he called a 16 big blind shove from Drew Woodke with eights in the big blind and won against {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts}.

Of course, a little luck helps too. Earlier in the day, "Gardy" shipped almost all of his stack in preflop with {a-Clubs}{10-Spades} against Anderon's {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}. They got the rest in on a ten-high flop, with Gardenhire doubling.

Licking had a big stack fairly early on and picked up aces late to bust an opponent and essentially lock in his chip lead.

Others among the 13 survivors included Gardenhire's fellow RunGod Pro Michael Sanders (165,500), Clint Lilienthal (30,000), and former RunGood Council Bluffs champ Brandon Fish.

Players eliminated during Day 1a included Matt Anderson, Aaron Johnson, Phil Mader, Jeff Fielder, Terry Karn, and RunGood Pros Jamie Kerstetter, Bernard Lee, Ryan Tepen, and Ray Henson.

Kerstetter had a particularly painful elimination when she got top set of jacks in against the nut straight held by Clint Lilienthal just before reentries ended. She failed to pair the board and Lilienthal surged to the top of the counts. He would later bag 30,000.

More RunGood action Saturday at noon local time.

Quads Again for Perry

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Colin Perry
Colin Perry

It's hard enough to make quads once in a day, but Colin Perry just pulled the trick a second time.

Earlier, he doubled with quad fours that he flopped. Once again, he jammed with fours, this time finding himself at risk for 27,000 against the aces of Mike Rieck. Once again, the flop brought the other two fours and Perry doubled up.

Gardenhire Gets There

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Justin Gardenhire at RunGood Cup Championship.
Justin Gardenhire at RunGood Cup Championship.

We found Justin Gardenhire pushing nearly all of his chips in from middle position in what looked to be a reraised pot, and Matt Anderson calling in the small blind. He turned over {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}, but Gardenhire still had a bit more behind the 34,200 he put in.

"I have three outs," Gardenhire said with a smile.

The flop came {4-Spades}{10-Clubs}{4-Hearts} and Gardenhire snapped off the last 5,400.

"You hit your ten?" Anderson wondered.

Indeed, Gardenhire showed {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}. The {8-Diamonds} turn and {3-Spades} river were bricks.

Lilienthal Coolers Kerstetter

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Jamie Kerstetter
Jamie Kerstetter

Two players checked to Jamie Kerstetter, who bet 14,500 on a flop of {9-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} in the cutoff. Small blind Clint Lilienthal pushed in about 75,000, and Kerstetter shoved for approximately 60,000 after the third player folded.

Lilienthal: {k-Spades}{q-Spades}
Kerstetter: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

It was top set against a straight, with Kerstetter needing the board to pair. The {q-Clubs} turn and {4-Clubs} river didn't do it, and she wished everyone good luck before departing.

Players are on a dinner break for 45 minutes.

Colin Perry
Colin Perry

We found Colin Perry in the big blind shoving all in for 12,000 after an opponent in the small bet bet 3,000 on a completed board of {k-}{4-}{4-}{10-}{3-}. Perry's opponent quickly called, and Perry turned over {4-}{4-} for quads.

Lilienthal Pays Off Tepen

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Ryan Tepen
Ryan Tepen

Ryan Tepen opened for 700 in middle position and got two callers. He bet 1,200 on a {4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{10-Clubs} flop, and Clint Lilienthal called from the button. Tepen fired again for 2,200 on the {8-Hearts} turn. Lilienthal again called and then found himself facing a barrel of 3,600 on the {10-Hearts} river. Lilienthal said something inaudible then quickly called.

Tepen showed {6-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for a backdoor flush, and Lilienthal mucked {a-Spades}{10-Spades}.
