Russell Licking, Justin Gardenhire Atop Day 1a Counts

RunGood Poker Series' first ever $1,100 Main Event kicked off at Horseshoe Council Bluffs, and 68 players turned out for the first of two starting days. When the dust settled, Russell Licking had piled up 240,500 for the chip lead, besting the 213,500 bagged by RunGood Pro Justin Gardenhire.

Success on his home circuit isn't new to Gardenhire. Early this year alone, he chopped RunGood Hard Rock Tulsa for $40,000 and got 15th at RunGood Council Bluffs for $2,281 more. He also finished third in October 2014 for $15,091.

Gardenhire picked up a couple of big pots late to help his surge. He busted Dash Daenz in a three-bet pot when the Daenz shipped {q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} from the button on a {3-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop after Gardenhire bet with {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} in the small blind. Then, he called a 16 big blind shove from Drew Woodke with eights in the big blind and won against {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts}.

Of course, a little luck helps too. Earlier in the day, "Gardy" shipped almost all of his stack in preflop with {a-Clubs}{10-Spades} against Anderon's {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}. They got the rest in on a ten-high flop, with Gardenhire doubling.

Licking had a big stack fairly early on and picked up aces late to bust an opponent and essentially lock in his chip lead.

Others among the 13 survivors included Gardenhire's fellow RunGod Pro Michael Sanders (165,500), Clint Lilienthal (30,000), and former RunGood Council Bluffs champ Brandon Fish.

Players eliminated during Day 1a included Matt Anderson, Aaron Johnson, Phil Mader, Jeff Fielder, Terry Karn, and RunGood Pros Jamie Kerstetter, Bernard Lee, Ryan Tepen, and Ray Henson.

Kerstetter had a particularly painful elimination when she got top set of jacks in against the nut straight held by Clint Lilienthal just before reentries ended. She failed to pair the board and Lilienthal surged to the top of the counts. He would later bag 30,000.

More RunGood action Saturday at noon local time.

Arndt Stacks Off in Two Pots to End Day

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Rich Arndt bet 15,000 on a completed board of {3-Clubs}{a-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{9-Spades} and Reggie Tynes made it 30,000 in the small blind. Arndt shoved all in for 50,700 effective and Tynes called with {7-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for a straight. Arndt showed {7-Spades}{6-Spades} for a whiffed straight draw.

The next hand, Brandon Fish opened to 6,200 under the gun. Michael Sanders made it 16,000 in the next seat, and Arndt jammed for 29,000. Fish folded, and Sanders called.

Sanders: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}
Arndt: {3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}

The board ran out {j-Clubs}{2-Spades}{9-Spades}{5-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, leaving Arndt dead on fourth street.

Players are bagging for the night now with about 36 minutes left in the level.

Three-Outer Sinks Perry

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

Colin Perry jammed 25,000 from the button in an unopened pot, and Brandon Fish called in the small blind.

Fish: {a-Diamonds}{4-Spades}
Perry: {a-Spades}{9-Spades}

Perry needed to fade fours but one appeared on the {k-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{10-Clubs} flop. The {3-Diamonds} was a brick turn and the {7-Hearts} likewise on the river, and Perry wished everyone good luck before taking his leave.

"How Do I Miss?"

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Brandon Fish opened the button to 4,500, and Michael Sanders made it 12,000 in the small blind. The flop came {3-Hearts}{j-Spades}{2-Hearts} and Sanders checked. Fish bet 8,000 and Sanders called. Check-check on the {8-Spades} and the river was a {j-Clubs}. Sanders checked.

"How do I miss?" Fish muttered as he checked. "How the fuck do I miss?"

Sanders showed {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}, and Fish mucked {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts} for a missed double draw.
