Shantanu Garg Wins RGPS Tulsa Main Event ($40,555)

A wild weekend of poker is in the books at the RunGood Series Tulsa $600 Main Event with a very deserving champion in Shantanu Garg of Springfield, Missouri.

Garg defeated a field of 472 entries to take home the $40,555 first prize, a prestigious RunGood Contenders series ring, and a trip to Las Vegas for the RunGood Pro-Am at the PokerGO studio in December.

Garg won the title after a short heads-up match with runner-up Nikhil Behl, who took home $38,000 for second place after the pair agreed to a deal before heads up play began.

The win is Garg’s first-ever live tournament victory, and in fact is just his second-ever cash following a 29th place finish in the RunGood Main Event in Joplin, Missouri in February 2020 for $1,245.

“It’s awesome. It’s really awesome,” said the champion after his win. Garg also said poker is mostly a hobby for him and that he mainly plays small-stakes cash and rarely plays tournaments.

When asked why he decided to play this event he said simply “because it was close to my home in Springfield, so why not?”

It’s as good a reason as any to take a shot at turning $600 into over $40,000 and Garg did just that.

The Day’s Action

With the final 60 players already in the money and 30-minute blinds, it was the perfect recipe for an incredible fast-paced day of action that saw almost half the remaining field fall before the first break two hours in.

Among those eliminated early was the overwhelming chip leader entering the day, Dakotah O’Dell.

While O’Dell entered the day with over 200 big blinds, he was in reverse from ‘shuffle up and deal’ and a table change that put him up against Daniel Lowery in a pair of big hands saw him exit in 38th place for $1,325.

Lowery was unable to spin O’Dell’s chips to the final table however, falling just shy in 10th place for $4,786.

Other notables to fall short of the final table included Day 1a chip leader Marsha Adams (11th place - $3,829), and Day 1b chip leaders Preston Roberts (25th place - $1,522) and Yahya Aamer (32nd place - $1,522).

RunGood Ambassadors Kris Burchfield and Julie Cornelius managed to spin their short stacks up the payout ladder, with Burchfield making the final table and finishing 7th for $7,731, while Cornelius earned herself 26th place money of $1,522.

The shortest stack in the room to start the day made an incredible run to the final table himself, as the very aptly named Daniel Sleeper gave opponents nightmares all the way up to a fifth-place finish for $13,156.

Garg’s Run Through the Final Table

The pace of play didn’t slow down once the final table was reached either, as Garg quickly eliminated Devin Arnone with a classic cooler to start his ascent to the title.

Once play got down to four-handed play, it was Garg who eliminated Christopher Livesay in fourth place, then Ryan Bevenue in third place, each time with queen-jack and behind, but he got there both times to get to heads-up before triumphing over Behl.

Nikhil Behl Eliminated in 2nd Place ($38,000)

Level 29 : Blinds 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Nikhil Behl
Nikhil Behl

Shantanu Garg raised to 500,000 on the button and was called by Nikhil Behl.

On a flop of {a-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}, Behl checked to Garg who bet 700,000.

Behl replied with a check-raise all-in for a bit over 4,000,000.

Garg called with a chance to win the tournament.

Nikhil Behl: {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}
Shantanu Garg: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

Garg was ahead with his pair of kings, but Behl had a ton of equity with his pair and flush draw.

The {2-Clubs} on the turn was no help, nor was the {3-Spades} on the river to give Garg the win and send Behl home with second-place money.

Garg Takes the Lead

Shantanu Garg
Shantanu Garg

In a limped pot, Shantanu Garg checked the {6-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} flop and Nikhil Behl bet 200,000 which Garg quickly called.

On the {9-Clubs} turn, Garg again checked and now faced a bet of 600,000. Garg then check-raised to 2,300,000, which was called by Behl.

The river was the {10-Spades} and Garg moved all in for his last 1,600,000.

Behl paused briefly then folded, to pass a slight chip lead to his tablemate.

Ryan Bevenue Eliminated in 3rd Place ($23,440)

Level 27 : Blinds 75,000/125,000, 125,000 ante
Ryan Bevenue
Ryan Bevenue

After Ryan Bevenue limped his small blind, Shantanu Garg raised to 375,000 in the big blind.

Bevenue called to see a flop of {q-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{6-Spades}. He then checked to Garg, who bet 450,000.

After a minute or so of deliberation, Bevenue moved all in for about 1,500,000 total and Garg called.

Ryan Bevenue: {a-Spades}{j-Clubs}
Shantanu Garg: {q-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}

Bevenue's aggression had run into Garg's top pair of queens, and they held up with the {3-Clubs}{10-Hearts} runout.

Garg and Nikhil Behl have taken a short break before beginning heads-up play.

Christopher Livesay

After Shantanu Garg raised to 300,000 in the cutoff, Christopher Livesay moved all in from the small blind for 1,250,000.

Garg made the call to put Livesay at risk.

Christopher Livesay: {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Shantanu Garg: {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

The flop came {j-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{10-Spades} giving each player a pair but putting Garg ahead with his jacks.

The {3-Hearts}{3-Spades} runout couldn't help Livesay who bowed out just shy of the podium.

Daniel Sleeper Eliminated in 5th Place ($13,156)

Level 27 : 75,000/125,000, 125,000 ante
Daniel Sleeper
Daniel Sleeper

Daniel Sleeper's incredible Day 2 run has come to an end.

He entered the day with the shortest stack of just 36,000 chips, good for just 7 big blinds, but went on an incredible heater to make the final table and then finish in fifth place after falling to chip leader Nikhil Behl.

Behl raised the button and Sleeper was all in in the small blind for his last 100,000.

Daniel Sleeper: {k-Spades}{j-Spades}
Nikhil Behl: {q-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}

"Just no queen" asked Sleeper, but the dealer spread a board of {a-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}, indeed pairing Behl's queen on the turn to end Sleeper's day.

John Millsap

John Millsap moved all in from the small blind for 450,000, and after a bit of thought got called by Christopher Livesay in the big blind.

John Millsap: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}
Christopher Livesay: {k-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}

Livesay playfully called for an eight on the flop and got it, as the dealer spread {2-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{10-Hearts} on the table.

The {6-Spades} turn and {4-Hearts} river couldn't save Millsap and he was sent away with the first five-figure payday of the tournament.

Millsap Correctly Hero Calls Sleeper

Level 25 : Blinds 50,000/75,000, 75,000 ante
John Millsap
John Millsap

Daniel Sleeper raised to 150,000 in the small blind and was called by John MIllsap in the big blind.

The players checked the {2-Hearts}{4-Spades}{q-Clubs} flop, but on the {2-Clubs} turn, Sleeper bet 75,000.

Millsap called and on the {a-Diamonds} river, Sleeper fired again, this time for 225,000.

Millsap took a minute to think, then called.

Sleeper showed {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for a missed flush draw and nine-high.

Millsap then turned over {k-Spades}{j-Clubs} for king high and the nut no-pair for the winner.

Kris Burchfield moved all in for his last 775,000 under the gun and was called by Ryan Bevenue in the big blind.

Kris Burchfield: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}
Ryan Bevenue: {a-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}

The RunGood ambassador was in great shape through the {4-Spades}{10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} flop, but the {6-Hearts} turn gave Bevenue some hope with a gutshot straight draw to go with his ace.

The dealer then dropped the {a-Spades} on the river, bringing a crushing ending to Burchfield's day.
