The staff at The Barrel Social Club took a chance by attaching a $250,000 guaranteed prize pool to the headlining event of the 2026 RGPS Golden Expedition Kentucky series.
“To come in and put up a $250K guarantee was a really big deal for us, super ambitious," explained Chief Executive Officer Matt Vaughan to PokerNews on the busiest day of the series.
The risk was well worthwhile, as the event set new records in the $800 Main Event after 154 more entries were recorded during the final two flights. The guarantee was smashed before cards were even in the air, and the next milestone was reached early in Day 1e.
Vaughan spoke more about the success of the event after hitting the $300,000 mark, and the first-ever RunGood Main Event at The Barrel produced the largest ever prize pool in the state of Kentucky with a final total of $424,200.
After the new benchmarks were established, action on the felt moved back into the spotlight with two more bubbles to be decided. Day 1e came to close with Frank Covich padding his chip stack on the final hand, climbing to the overall lead for the week with 630,000.
Covich set the pace for the 15 survivors who advanced to Day 2, holding a big advantage over Joel Cocanougher (457,000) in second spot. Christopher Borinsky (415,000) rounded out the top three on the day, and will return in good position for the final day.

The last two RunGood Ambassadors yet to qualify for Day 2 were back in the field, and both found their demise in hands involving pocket aces. Carl Masters took his seat at the end of late registration, and lost the first hand he played when his aces were cracked.
Fellow ambassador Greg Raymer had the opposite experience, enduring all the way to the final two tables before running into aces to hit the rail.
Another notable hand saw Jason Esdale (76,000) at risk, holding pocket aces and flopping quads to help build his stack on the way to a bag.
The last piece of business was the money bubble, which took almost an hour to see a player hit the rail. Covich took care of those honors, as his pocket aces held to send Matthew Clark home empty-handed.
The final flight will see 16 more players advance to Day 2, bringing the total to 74 survivors returning in the money on Monday, September 7. Action will resume at 12:15 p.m. local time, with the blind level to be determined after the Day 1f wraps up.
Levels will continue to be 40 minutes in duration for the remainder of the event, with players seeing breaks following every two hours of play.
Official prize pool numbers will be posted at the start of play, with the RGPS Main Event ring set to be awarded on Labor Day.
